“A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.” - Winnie the Pooh. Friendship is one of the things that helps build you as a person. It shapes who you are, and potentially who you will be. Having friends can be crucial to both your mental health and your physical health, and it’s important to know how to maintain friendships and some of the key factors in doing so. Although friendship is loosely defined as “the state of being friends”, it is better termed in layers. The term ‘friendship’ is not only the state of being friends, but involves multiple complex qualities. Throughout this essay, I hope to explain three of the essential qualities (or “layers”) of maintaining friendships, including trust, respect, and kindness/understanding and why they …show more content…
“Respecting others is a silent way to express our feeling for them. It’s an unspoken way of communication which builds unshaken and strong relations between people respecting each other. When a person shows respect for someone, then it means that the person has some value for him.”₂. An example of respect would be talking out something you have different opinions about with someone, and not letting it have an impact on the way you think of them. If you were to be judgmental of them and allow their opinion to become harmful to your relationship or give disrespectful and inconsiderate feedback, it wouldn’t be respectful. Respect is important for both persons in a friendship to have because there is a balance of responsibility to hold each other up. It encourages you to be respectful not only pertaining to the friendship, but to yourself when making decisions pertaining to relationships in general. It also plays a vital role in communication. If a person feels comfortable communicating with you honestly, you know that you and your feedback are respected and
Respect is a such a simple concept and a virtue that should be simple to follow. It means treating other people and animals in a dignified manner. Respect doesn’t mean that people need to hug everyone they come across or hold their opinion higher than everyone elses. Respect means treating others as equals and acknowledging that as human
Marion Winik’s “What Are Friends For?” expresses the characteristics of friendships and their importance in her existence. Winik begins by stating her theory of how some people can’t contribute as much to a friendship with their characteristic traits, while others can fulfill the friendship. She illustrates the eight friendships she has experienced, categorized as Buddies, Relative Friends, Work Friends, Faraway Friends, Former Friends, Friends You Love to Hate, Hero Friends, and New Friends. In like manner, the friendships that I have experienced agree and contradict with Winik’s categorizations.
Proper respect for others begins by a person respecting their self. Respect is developed by expressing honor, leadership, value, and trust in a person. If everyone respects everyone someday, the world will become a seventh heaven. It is important to be respectful for safety, to abide by the law, because children are influenced by their elders’ actions, and because God says so. Motivation from peers can help a person realize there is always room to improve the level of respect a person exhibits. Respect was, is, and always will be a positive attribute for everyone to strive for in their lives.
omen are also said to live a content life, just like Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. Lily and Jane have been friends for 40 years, now that 's friendship goals! The key to their friendship is to have a sense of fun, not let too much time go by without contacting each other, and to support each other in their endeavors. In today 's society, it can be hard to find friends that really genuinely love, support, and wants what is best for you. In an assessment of 2,835 women with breast cancer in the Nurses’ Health Study, those with no close friends were four times as likely to die from the disease as the women with 10 or more close friends(Friends are Preventive Medicine). Since it can be hard to find that, most women tend to stay by themselves rather than get hurt and back-stabbed. Little do they know, their health is being effected because they don 't have that person to confine in, to be vulnerable with,
Most people go through life and always hear about the word respect, but they don’t know what it means. Respect is the esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person. There are things in life you need to hold in respect. Respect for yourself, respect for others, and respect for property. Respect is taught to people everywhere and it is even taught to them in their religions. Respect is the very aspect that keeps everything in your life.
Friends can be classified in many ways, friends can be real or fake, and friends have many characteristics. Society often throws the term “friend” around making in a loose term. Many times someone gets mistaken as a friend because they are enjoyable to be around, but is that what creates a friendship? Friendship has much more meaning than what society gives; there are things that attract a friendship, there are ways to classify a friend, and there is things real friends to verse fake friends.
Throughout the years I have met plenty of different people. Some that have left my life just as fast as they came in but some have stayed and I like to considered them friends. I value any friendship I have with a friend. I believe the bond I have between each friend I have is unique and if it wasn’t we wouldn’t be friends. I build my bonds based on respect, honesty, and trust. As long as the friendship has those 3 key factors it would be successful. Even though this is what I believe and stand by some of my friends that have been around for years have betrayed my trust me and crossed boundaries. These so called friends I keep at a distance. Then there are some friends that I have excellent relationships with and are like family to me. There
Most beautiful kindred of all of humans are the companionship. Without excitement, confusion, tangles and commitment life becomes a cake-walk if people have a hand of a friend to hold on. Can everyone imagine if there is no friendship in the world? Nobody will care about one another. Friends are the pillars of strength that give support and comfort in life "A hedge between keeps friendship green”. Friendship is the one of the medium that can build unity among community. As Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of United States, once said, “Friendship is the only cement that will hold the world together”, I strongly agree to his statement because friendship teach to help one another, learn to accept each other and build trust and faith towards each other.
Throughout our lives we have all had the honor of experiencing friendship, but never has friendship been defined in a way where it encompasses the true feelings and duties that come along with it. Webster’s Dictionary refers to the definition of friendship as “The state of being friends;the quality or state of being friendly : friendliness.” To me this just scratches the surface of what friendship means. Friendship to me is not only just being friendly, but rather the journey that friends take along the way. Friendship is a deeper connection between people that helps them grow together, it means being a team. Friends will go out of their way to cheer you up when you’re sad or they’ll be there for the happy moments to cheer you on. True friendship allows you to be yourself and not care what others think.
Aristotle once said “Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.” True friendship is a bond built off of selflessness and trust for it seeks happiness and good in another. People can give and take, but only true friends give without expecting anything in return. True friends play a major role in a person’s life and will listen more than lecture; help more than criticize, and understand one’s weaknesses while still focusing stolidly on the strong qualities of that person. They are the people that stick by one’s side and support them in their darkest hour no matter what. The four main qualities that define a true friend are loyalty, understanding, encouragement, and a positive influence.
We do not make friends because they are useful but the bond of friendship, once it grows stronger and stronger has a number of positive aspects. There are certain secrets that can only be shared with our friends only. When we are facing a difficult situation in our lives, only true friends come forward to help us overcome all the difficulties.
In life we come across many people. Some will hate us while others will adore us. The ones who hate us can be referred to as enemies and the ones who show us adoration are referred to as friends. There are three types of friends. They are the aquaintinces we make in school, the friends we loose as one grows, and best friends who may stray, but never too far away.
A friend is someone difficult to find. A friend is someone you can always count on when times are tough. The dictionary's definition of a good friend is a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. A good friend is there when you are struggling. For example, when a boy breaks your heart a good friend walks you through it and offers a shoulder to cry on. According to Bree Neff, a good friend is someone who is trustworthy, doesn't talk behind your back, listens to your problems, gives good advice and tries to lend humor along with his or her support. There are also bad friends, those who pretend to care and then turn around gossiping and starting drama. Good and bad friends are all around you, involved in your everyday life. To find good friends you should look for such traits as being kind, trustworthy, loyal and dependable.
Special days are always special to us. We collect memories of the past and present, we would love to dwell in those memories. Today we are celebrating Friendship Day, which is most awaited.
Out of all the things people have in common what is the one component that brings friends closer ? Laughter.
