Hero Essay
The hero and the hero’s journey is very useful to society. The hero shows ways to be a better person impacts how one sees them. Three characteristics the heroes in Simon Sinek’s TED Talk, Homer’s Odyssey, the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and Simon Sinek’s TED Talk, have are being trustworthy, defeating obstacles, and defensive and self-sacrificing.
Each of the heroes can be trusted, and their followers express that they know it. Simon Sinek stated that heroes are trustworthy, because when someone feels safe, secure and senses nothing can harm them, that is one way someone can obtain your trust. To add on, Sinek explains how trustworthiness works in real life. He said that in an organization, if someone is given a decent number of breaks from the owner, there’s trust between them. This trust pushes the boss’ workers to risk certain things for him, knowing he or she would do the same to save them. Also, the

movie shows how being trusted is important to be a hero because Everett gains trust from his friends, who escaped prison with him, by being honest with his words. Also, his men help him when he needs it because they have given him their word. To add on, Odyssey shows Odysseus gaining his men’s trust while fighting with Scylla and longing to get back to Penelope. When fighting Scylla, he does not tell his men how awful she is, and in return, they don’t question him since they trust his judgement, believing they will turn out fine. While competing against the men guarding Penelope, Odysseus and his son trust each other when his son goes to retrieve weapons and Odysseus believes he will come back just in time to help defeat the men. To sum up, a hero’s trustworthiness helps society positively way by showing quick ways to gain someone’s trust. Heroes have many obstacles on their journey to test them, but will almost always defeat them.
Sinek states that doing the wrong thing can make someone feel unsafe with the hero. Therefore, if you make a good decision when coming across a difficult task, you will be given trust in return. Also, the conflict of the movie is running from the police so that Everett may go back to his ex-wife. Her soon-to-be husband, the divorce, and the police within it show the obstacles he must defeat. Also, Odyssey shows how Odysseus overcomes problems, including the Cyclops and the many men trying to stop him from getting to his wife. While stopping the Cyclops from eating his men and trapping them in his cave, Odysseus hit him in his to save his men. Odysseus and his men end up tricking the Cyclops leave the cave, unharmed, underneath the livestock. Also, Odysseus kills the men who want to stop him from getting to his wife. Odysseus, his son and two men, defeat them and take back his wife and his
castle. All three heroes show protectiveness and are very sacrificial. Sinek’s speech showed that awful leaders will give up their people and even possibly their people’s things to help themselves save money. Conversely, a better one sacrifices their money for their people and protects them in that way. In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, one of the men was taken by some policemen and was beaten and killed, however his strength stops him from telling the location of his accomplices. Also, when an African-American is being killed by the K.K.K., Everett makes his companions aid him with the rescue of him. In addition, within Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus risks his life when going against the Cyclops so he can rescue his men. Also, he is defensive when he makes them all promise not to hurt the animals on the land. Even though he says his men won’t wound them, they still do. He tries to beg the gods to spare them and his men complete a ceremony, but Zeus is far too upset to accept it. Zeus executes them and leaves Odysseus alone, even although he took precaution. Clearly, you can see that the hero is very useful to society¬¬¬. The heroes demonstrated their trustworthiness and how to overcome obstacles. To conclude, you should use this information to your benefit by making yourself a better person and helping society for the greater good.
Assignment details: Analyze the components of the hero’s journey. Basically, support the argument that Jaws follows the epic hero cycle. Name specific examples from the movie and connect them to the hero’s journey. However, this is not a plot summary. You are not retelling the story, but selecting examples to support the analysis.
Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, conveys, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”. In other words, Aristotle states that the gaining of self-knowledge provides an individual with the ability to know one’s personal gifts and accountabilities. To start one’s adult life a person must pursue the journey of self-discovery to learn in depth about their skills and weaknesses. Individuals must find themselves through the limitations and ordeals that they face during their voyage for self-awareness. For example, in Tim O’Brien’s short story, “On the Rainy River”, the narrator shares his story about self-discovery. O’Brien looks back into his past, to the time when he was called to serve in the Vietnam War. O’Brien’s initial
Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.
Joseph Campbell made himself one of the chief authorities on how mythology works when he published his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In this book, Campbell describes what he believes to be the monomyth, known as “The Hero’s Journey.” Campbell wrote that this monomyth, the basic structure of all heroic myth, has three basic stages, which in turn have subcategories themselves. The heroic story of Katniss Everdeen, told in the movie Hunger Games, follows Campbell’s monomyth outline quite well.
Men are not perfect all the time and can make mistakes that they regret later on. In The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men make mistakes that have effects on them. To begin, one mistake Odysseus makes is when he was so proud of himself for defeating the cyclops. After he got his ship ready and thought that he won he kept on taunting Polyphemus, who was the son of the Poseidon. Odysseus was so amused about how they just defeated cyclops that he didn't know what he was saying which is the mistake he was doing. He reveals to Polyphemus that he was the Odysseus, raider of the cities, Laertes’ son, and the man from Ithaka. Polyphemus then tells his father, Poseidon, to cast a curse upon Odysseus and his journey back home. Since Odysseus was on a ship in the sea, Poseidon had a great way to make sure his journey wasn't as great since he was the god of the sea.
The Hero’s Journey is an ancient archetype that we find throughout our modern life and also, in the world of literature.Whether metaphorical or real, the journey that a character goes on shows not only the incredible transformation of the hero but it also gives them their life meaning. It is the ultimate human experience and it reflects on every aspect of life. Take Logan, also known as Wolverine, from the X-Men movie as an example. His adventure starts with “The Call,” which is the first step of the Hero’s Journey. This step happens due to the realization of imbalance and injustice that the character has in their life. Logan steps into the first stage of the pattern but is hesitant to start his adventure because he does not know what and
When his crew entered into the area of the Sirens his true arrogance comes out. To avoid the Siren’s sound, Odysseus comes up with a brilliant plan that saves him and his crew. Instead of continuing to escape the Sirens, he is overly proud of his epic rescue says “But even from there my courage, my presence of mind and tactics saved us all” (12; 229-231). Finally, the biggest mistake Odysseus makes is when the Cyclopes traps the crew in his lair. Odysseus devises another brilliant plan and saves his people. Arrogance comes over Odysseus and he says “Cyclops if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so- say Odysseus, raiders of cities he gouged out your eye, laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca” (9; 558-562). The need to claim the defeat of the cyclops is an ego boost that he found more important than quickly escaping. As a result, more of his crew's lives are
The Odyssey paints a picture of the supposed savior Odysseus. The irony of Odysseus’ situation is that he really is not the marvelous hero that many who read The Odyssey see him to be. When imagining a great hero, the words of cruel, unfaithful, selfish, or careless never come to mind, but the son of Laertes sets examples for each attribute. Odysseus makes many poor decisions that cause his dislikable traits to outweigh his few better ones. Several of his more prominent characteristics are exhibited on numerous accounts.
The Odyssey is a tale that has changed literature and storytelling. In this tale Odysseus is a Soldier from the battle of Troy trying to get home to his island of Ithaca, where he is king. His wife and son must wait ten years while he is trying to make his way home. In Odysseus’s absence wooer’s, or better known as suitors, learn of his absence and travel to Ithaca to win his wife’s hand in marriage. These men come every day feasting on Odysseus’s food and wine, and give his servant’s orders. His son Telemachus, does his best to keep the suitors from ruining his fathers house but he is only a boy, and doesn’t receive the respect of an adult. Telemachus then has a visit from the god Athena, whom Odysseus is friends with, who advises him to travel to find out about his father. In his travels he hears that Odysseus may still be alive. Meanwhile Odysseus goes through a series of adventures and hardships that prove his wisdom. It is interesting in contrast of the Iliad, even though Achilles was much stronger and a better warrior, Odysseus was portrayed as a greater hero due to his wisdom. He uses this wisdom to escape from the Cyclops.
To begin after some travels Odysseus and his men find themselves on an island where cyclops live. The men aren’t welcomed very kindly. The cyclops traps the men in his cave and begins to eat them one by one. This shows that monsters were a problem to people who lived in Ancient Greece. After awhile of Odysseus watching men getting eaten he comes up with a great idea and he gets the cyclops drunk. When the cyclops falls asleep Odysseus and his men drive a wooden stake into the cyclops eye. Even though the cyclops was
middle of paper ... ... In Homer’s Odyssey, both Odysseus and his son Telemachus embark on long, difficult journeys; Odysseus trying to return from Troy to his home in Ithaca, escaping Calypso and the island of Ogygia, and Telemachus from Ithaca to Pylos and Sparta in search of his lost father. While The Odyssey tells of the courage both men demonstrate during their respective travels, their quests are the results of the intentions and desires of gods. Odysseus is trapped in exile on Ogygia by the will of Poseidon, whose anger Odysseus attracts when he blinds the Cyclops Polyphemus, son of Poseidon, and by the love of Calypso, who wishes to make Odysseus her husband.
Odysseus exemplifies aspects of true heroism, namely his cunning, witty, and shrewd mind. He also portrays a brilliant leader. Of the many adventures Odysseus endures, his encounter with the cyclopes embodies his heroism best. Odysseus landed on the island and lead his men into the cyclops’s cave. When Polyphemus the giant returned, Odysseus took the lead and spoke to the cyclops. When the cyclops asked where Odysseus's boat was, he wittily answered, “My Ship? Poseidon god of the earthquake smashed my ship, he drove it against the rocks at your island's far cape, he dashed it against a cliff as the winds rode us in”(Homer 220). This brilliant response later saved the men on the boat from being captured and eaten by the cyclops....
What makes a hero? Most people already know what makes a hero. Beatrice Prior develops the 12 stages of a hero’s journey. In the story, Divergent author by Veronica Roth. Three of the stages she goes through is Call To Adventure, Crossing The Threshold, and Ordeal. Beatrice has a gift which is Divergent and it’s not new to their society, but extremely rare. She develops certain admirable qualities towards the story. Also she experiences an initiating event that propels her to action.
Heroes are inspirational role models to others because of their courage and selfless giving. Many heroes are well-educated, but not necessarily in the traditional sense of the word. Their education mostly revolves around knowledge of the communities they live in and with the people with whom they share common dreams and goals. Heroes understand their local and global community in such a way that they are able to focus on the most pressing problems and find effective and creative solutions to those problems. Through their unique and heroic problem-solving they transform the lives of others. The relevant skills inherent in them bring out an aspect of humility, which humbles them to work with others to achieve desired goals (Morse, 2011).
Many people say that a hero is a supernatural being with special powers that they use in order to help society and defeat an evil villain; others may say that a hero has to wear a cape and have a cool name. These things can be concluded from various stories, movies, or fairy tales and can be very commonly dispersed among people all over the world. Heroes of today, such as firefighters, policemen, or doctors, don’t have to be these things and might never be. Never less, they are heroes because they all want to help people no matter what the cost, even their lives. This is called being selfless and wanting what’s best for others, not yourself. Anyone can be a hero to someone if they do something to help another person who is unable to do a certain task, but this is not the only quality of a hero. This can include taking the trash out for the elderly. Some, like John Barth, say “Everyone is necessarily the hero of his own life story.” This also means that one does not have to defeat anyone to be a hero because one could be having an internal conflict with oneself. The characteristic being selfless is a prime example of how the heroes of today are and what they do for society through their selfless acts.
