The year 2016, for many, has been filled with a lot of highs and lows. It seems that every generation has good times and bad; however, I blame much of the sorrow felt today on the music society listens to. Finding truly good music nowadays is not an easy task. This is why reflecting on the musical icons of the past, who have shaped our heritage, may be an enlightening task. It is such a tragedy how one of the greatest rock bands of all time has almost been forgotten by the post-millennial generation. The Grateful Dead has had a long lasting impact on not only millions of people, but on the future of music as a whole. However, they do not get the credit that they rightfully deserve. Led by lead guitarist Jerry Garcia, the band was most …show more content…
The Grateful Dead was their escape from all of the negatives of the time. The Vietnam War was raging at the start of their career. This was a challenging moment in our human history. Our social morals were being questioned and our country was being divided. For many, music was the best coping method. The upbeat and hypnotic sounds were exceptionally attractive to the peace seeking people of the day. It reminded them that they had much more in common than not. If our species in today's world could learn to treasure this type of music, they may be enlightened and come together as a whole once more, similar to the early …show more content…
Everyone was spreading good vibes of peace, love, and happiness. The Dead wanted people to come together as a community and that is what happened. This band should be remember for more than just being addicted to drugs. Maybe we should not revel their actions, but we should instead celebrate how this band brought a new sense of happiness to a grave world. They need to be recognized for the achievements that they accomplished. When the younger generation of music lovers look back on them, they cannot distinguish between the false and true stereotypes. This is unfortunate because for so many people, The Grateful Dead was an escape from reality to a place full of tie-dye and roses. Real fans will remember The Dead for who they truly were: artists. They started with a blank canvas and filled it with the drawings directly from the heart and soul. Their passion sparked a revolution to “spread the love” and cherish even the smallest of memories, a mentality that could really help a lot of people entering the new
"We always though of the Grateful Dead as being the engine that was driving the spaceship that we were traveling on."-Ken Babbs, a former Merry Prankster
Jerry Garcia’s life was filled with wonderful things, many of which he never expected in the first place. After an almost fatal heroin overdose in 1986, “ Garcia philosophically stated, ‘ I’m 45 years old, I’m ready for anything, I didn’t even plan on living this long so all this shit is just add-on stuff.’ ” (“Garcia”) This attitude shows why Garcia did all of the things he did and even how some of them came about. Garcia, who “functioned as the preeminent pied piper of the rock era,” led a life of great artistic ability which he used in many ways(“Grateful Dead_ Rockhall”).
In closing, the undoubtable influence of music, more specifically of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society is responsible for a number of changes to the status quo. These range from sexual liberation and racial desegregation all culminating with other influences to create an intergenerational identity. Despite the desperate attempts of older generations to smother these influences, these changes ultimately shaped the years that followed, molding the country into what it is today. Along the way these changes as well as individual involvement in them has also eased the lives of many through empowerment and a feeling of community and purpose. Despite a lull and renewal Rock ‘n’ Roll continues to serve as an agent of influence and change in today’s youth culture and continues to burn in the heart of past generations of loyal fans.
To the persistent individual, though, there is a body of music in existence that merits regard. It is powerful music written by the youth of America, youngsters who did have a stake in the Vietnam War. There can be little question about the origins of the power which American protest music conveyed: those who wrote such music lived each day with the real knowledge that they were losing friends in, and could possibly be forced themselves to go to, Vietnam. One such group, Creedence Clearwater Revival, made its contribution to this genre near the end of the Vietnam War.
The Grateful Dead is by far the epitome of improvisation and the ultimate cult band of their time. Not only have they influenced other bands like them, but they have gained the much deserved respect of their fans, and the music community. Although Jerry Garcia is no longer here to play like how he has his whole life, he is survived by his fellow remaining band members and the generations who still know what The Grateful Dead once was.
I have chosen to do my report on the Grateful Dead. They were a rock and
Throughout time, music has been an influential part of society. As a form of entertainment and expression, its impact has always been felt both economically and emotionally. During the Vietnam war, music evolved into more a form of expression rather than pure entertainment. Emotionally charged songs became a method to oppose the war, and vent frustrations. While many songs opposed the war, numerous others focused on peace and happiness. They provided a positive perspective in an otherwise depressing time. Along with incorporating passion into music, cultural diversity increased in music greatly. Black artists became progressively more popular and accepted in the musical scene. This respect carried over to society slowly but surely. During the Vietnam war, music played a crucial role in the societal evolution into a state where emotions fueled actions, more emphasis was put on equality, all opinions counted.
The Grateful Dead was a band that toured continuously for 30 years until the death of lead man Jerry Garcia. They were known for free flowing jams and bluegrass roots. Phish is a band that has toured consistently for the last 17 years and has in time made themselves into stealth multi-millionaires. Both are very talented bands, who have and in the Dead's case, had, created big names for themselves. Many people make wrongful association with these two groups of musicians. It is said that Phish is trying to be the Dead of this generation. This statement is very untrue. Phish is not a Grateful Dead take-off. Phish and the Dead have much more differences than similarities. There are of course a few similarities between these two bands. If there were none, nobody would compare them so much.
...that same mentor to many others. Hendricks and his quick life to fame led him to make bad decisions by getting into drugs, which cost him his life. However, he was able to do what he had enjoyed doing since he was a young child. Losing him at such a young age was tragic, especially since it was at the prime of his career. One must think how much more this successful young talented guitar player had to offer his fans. In fact one of Hendricks quotes was, “When I die, I want people to just play my music, go wild and freak out, do anything they want to do."– Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix dreams, determination, and his guitar have left a star in the Native American Heritage. The Jimi Hendrix Experience became one of most popular and highest grossing touring acts in the world, and the impact of his brief but impressive music career on popular music continues to live on by many.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pays tribute to artists that have made a difference in the music industry. These bands include Nirvana, who is apart of grunge. Grunge has to do with electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics and lyrics filled with agony. Nirvana is an important group that will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because they started a new era of grunge.

“Carpe diem, seize the day (Dead Poets Society, 1989).” This very famous line speak volumes to many in Dead Poets Society but it speak to one main character in particular, Todd Anderson, a student at the Welton Academy. Anderson is attending his first year at Weden and is being hounded by his parents about being just like his older brother. Todd is extremely shy and when faced with an assignments that involve speaking in front of the class he is terrified. That is until he meets a new teacher, Mr. John Keating, that teaches him the meaning of the phrase “carpe diem.” Todd Anderson’s character develops throughout the movie from being a shy legacy, to a boy who finds his voice, and finally to man who understands loss and can stand up for it.
Music is a major part of entertainment in the world. Throughout life, people are introduced to many types of music, artists, and bands. One specific group, however, is far more different from the rest: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, or better known as: The Beatles. The Beatles were, and still are, the most famous and biggest rock band in history (Infoplease). Most people would know them for their fame, but there is much more to the band and each individual of the band than what people really know. (About.com)
the distraught crowd filled the air with profane chants, burnt their flannel shirts and fought with police.”(Ronson) “Nirvana's choice to honour bands and people that had influenced them and Cobain's passionate and intense vocals especially on "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" silenced many of those who had labeled Cobain talentless.”(Ronson) Kurt Cobain had both a positive and negative influence. I know that while Kurt was alive he influenced culture positively. Some would say that “his” music was too loud and obnoxious. But what balanced out the loud was the truth in his lyrics. If Nirvana hadn’t been around, I don’t think there would have been such an impact by the grunge bands. If Cobain hadn’t committed suicide, I think that Nirvana might have burned out. Burning out was the opposite of what Kurt wanted. In all, I think that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana had more positive influence than negative. “I write poems for myself and I write poetry that gets torn apart and becomes songs. I have a lot of respect for words, the power of words.” -Kurt
