Did you know that people all around the world are forced to battle with an ongoing illness every day of their lives? It is important for every patient to be looked after and offered the best options so they could get back to living a happy and normal life. Any individual should receive undivided attention and support through their long exhausting battle, which will lead them to a clean bill of health. In the book The Fault In Our Stars, by John Green, he develops the idea that young cancer patients must endure many uphill battles during their path to recovery. Initially, Hazel and Augustus prove that relationships are hard to keep up with, but they know they are devoted to be together. However, a true friendship can last forever if it is based on pure honesty. Hazel and Augustus's distinct personalities lead them to forget about their flaws and put their love for each other first which makes them contribute to their own hardships.

Augustus put up strong fights which indicates their dedicated relationship to one another. They both think that their relationship is based on true love and meaningful quotes that they have read. Hazel and Augustus both love the quote “Without pain, we couldn’t feel joy” (Green 272), this quote creates many connections between the two of them. Their relationship is made up from their identical thoughts proven from novels or quotes. They started to realize if they did not have some sort of eternal problems, they would have never been matched up by isaac. Basically their illness and their support group is what brought them closer together. They felt a sense of true happiness when they read purposeful quotes, that meant something to the both of them. This is why Hazel and Augustus connect in a way which makes them bond more and have a more intimate relationship. Hazel and Augustus believe that writing eulogies for each other brought them closer together in a way that gave them a purpose in life. Hazel’s eulogy read “Augustus Waters was the star-crossed love of my life. Ours was an epic love story and I won’t be able to get more than a sentence into it without disappearing into a puddle of tears” (Green 259). Hazel’s eulogy talks about how they are pulled together by overcoming hurdles even when they reach rock bottom. This shows that their relationship came a long way and they have fought many problems together. Hazel and Augustus learn how to express their feelings before they began their heartfelt relationship. However, they learn that relationships are made up of many fights and arguments which have to be handled the right way. They both know that not all relationships are perfect and each couple has to deal with their own flaws. Hazel says “It was… it was nice to spend time with someone so interesting. We were very different and we disagreed about a lot of things, but he was always so interesting, you know” (Green 302), this shows how they learnt to deal with their differences and put their love for each other first. It also states that people like Hazel and Augustus are old enough to understand that true love does not come naturally or easily. They must diligently work together to forget about their flaws in order to maintain a steady relationship with one another. It will take time and patience but Hazel and Augustus both know they can make it happen. Their dedicated relationship is made from vigorous struggles they have had to overcome together, which shows how many times they have fought for each other. Hazel and Augustus prove that a genuine friendship is a very important part of a tennagers life. Hazel knows that honesty has a large impact on friendship. Augustus says “Listen, sorry I avoided the gate area. The McDonald's line wasn’t really that long; I just… I didn’t want to sit there with all those people looking at us or whatever” (Green 145-146), this shows how Augustus confessed to one of his lies. Friendship should always be made up of truths and truths only, this will lead to having a more intimate and close friend. A true friend should never tell lies and always keep promises. They both think that a strong friendship will help guide and give support to each other along the way. Hazel and Augustus said “We should team up and be the disabled vigilante duo roaring through the world, righting wrong, defending the weak, protecting the endangered” (Green 202), this shows their similar thought processes. Hazel and Augustus both know they missed out on part of their childhood memories because they had to deal with their illnesses. This tells us that they want to make a difference for others with an illness, so they do not have to feel the same agony that Hazel and Augustus felt. They both want to make a change and an impact on the world so that everyone makes the best memories of the lives, while they still have the chance to live. After Augustus lost his battle to Osteosarcoma, Hazel learns to cope without him by her side. Then her and Isaac become closer friends than ever, but they always feel a part of themselves is missing, since Augustus could not be with them any longer. With this in mind, people should know that a true friendship is very near and dear to people like Hazel, Augustus and Isaac. People believe that strong friendships will last for eternity. The quote “I don't want you to think I'm imagining a world without you” (Green 297), shows that their friendship is very important to the both of them and they do not ever want to leave each other's sides. People like Hazel and Augustus should still receive support from family and friends because as a teenager you still have a lot to learn, especially about their first relationship. Their parents gave them lots of love and support, especially their mothers because they were always there for them, since they were born. In order to make the right decisions, individuals should get input from others, but still provide their own opinions. Society should know a true friend when they see one because they’ll always stand by your side, encourage them and never forget the lasting memories they’ve made together. The differences in Hazels and Augustus's personalities changes them in a good way that makes them forget about their flaws and push through hardships with a strong finish.
Initially, Hazel and Augustus do not know how to show their affection for each other but they learn that they are destined to be together. However, they believe that friendships are essentially based on honesty. In the book The Fault In Our Stars, John Green helps prove that young cancer patients, can and will make it through their journey and in the end they will get to experience the bright future they have always dreamed of. It is very important for patients of any age, to get what they need in order to live a typical and happy lifestyle. People coping with an illness should stay strong and appreciate the things that they are given. There should be no reason to look at the past, just look forward to the good moments that are coming your way. After all, everyone deserves a chance in a long life time, so why not live everyday likes it’s your

In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. Although illness narratives are not novel or new, their prevalence in modern popular literature could be attributed to how these stories can be relatable, empowering, and thought-provoking. Susan Grubar is the writer for the blog “Living with Cancer”, in The New York Times, that communicates her experience with ovarian cancer (2012). In our LIBS 7001 class, Shirley Chuck, Navdeep Dha, Brynn Tomie, and I (2016) discussed various narrative elements of her more recent blog post, “Living with Cancer: A Farewell to Legs” (2016). Although the elements of narration and description (Gracias, 2016) were easily identified by all group members, the most interesting topics revolved around symbolism as well as the overall impression or mood of the post.

This book is a collection of stories and general life advice that Randy felt was important to share before moving on.

Being diagnosed with a chronic illness is a life-altering event. During this time, life is not only difficult for the patient, but also for their loved ones. Families must learn to cope together and to work out the best options for the patient and the rest of the family. Although it may not be fair at times, things may need to be centered on or around the patient no matter what the circumstance. (Abbott, 2003) Sacrifices may have to be made during difficult times. Many factors are involved when dealing with chronic illnesses. Coping with chronic illnesses alter many different emotions for the patients and the loved ones. Many changes occur that are very different and difficult to get used to. (Abbott, 2003) It is not easy for someone to sympathize with you when they haven’t been in the situation themselves. No matter how many books they read or people they talk to, they cannot come close to understanding.

In the saying of “Character is what you are in the dark” by Dwight Lyman Moody, can meaning many different things. One being, “you are most yourself when no one is watching”, another one also being, “dark and troubled times bring out a person's true nature”, and “your true nature is on the inside”. This quote can or cannot apply to the play of “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare.
People with cancer often begin to define themselves based on their experience with their illness, this self-definition through one’s cancer is one that the characters fear in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. The novel shows how the characters strive to discover their identities, but despite that are still identified by their illness. The novel also makes the argument that young people with cancer are not any more virtuous or different than other kids rather, they are just normal kids living with an illness. Augustus wants to be remembered and also be more than just a boy who battled cancer, but despite his efforts is still identified by his illness.
Being committed to something comes from an effort within. Being obligated is a sense of duty. Sometimes they may seem alike. In Ernest J. Gaines’s novel A Lesson Before Dying, we are introduced to a young man named Jefferson who is being put to death and a teacher named Grant Wilson. Their paths will intertwine when Grant is asked by Jefferson’s godmother to teach him to be a man. What starts off as an obligation becomes a commitment to teaching and learning what it means to be a man, a human being. With the help of strong women and a diligent reverend, a lesson truly taught. In this novel, Gaines wants the reader to understand that obligation and commitment is sometimes very difficult to define.

HL: The more I drowned myself in the thought and fear of my cancer the more I realize it’s not going to go away so why waste time worrying about it when I can try to be like everyone else? People always die and I am a person. I know I am going to die eventually just like every other human being, but just because I die differently doesn’t mean I'm not like anyone else. I learned to accept my cancer as soon as I realized it’s not disappearing anytime soon.
From the very time of birth, each one of us is made differently. We all have the same cells, body parts, and makeup but we all have a different face to present to the world. We all have different situations, beliefs and personalities. One thing everyone, both young and old have in common is the possibility for cancer to become an obstacle in his or her life. This treatment is not for everyone, though and is no guarantee that these treatments will cure you. It is only the patient’s decision to choose … is it worth living and fighting for, or is it time for me to go? Being diagnosed with cancer can drastically change someone’s life, along with the lives around him or her. This is why it is a hard decision to decide whether or not to receive treatment for this deadly disease. If the decision is made to refuse treatment for cancer, the decision must be respect. There are many reasons people refuse treatment. It’s hard to tell whether it’s more painful to the diagnosed patient or to the family and friends that are involved. People who refuse treatment for cancer have good reasons. Everyone’s diagnosis is different with respect to support, money, and general outlook on life. If they do not have much of these things they a...
