The Cay: Essay By: Alexxis Helton In “The Cay”, Phillip’s character reveals that through many different conflicts, he developed being frightened, overwhelmed, and in the end Phillip develops independence in the end. Phillip demonstrated being frightened after experiencing his ship blowing up and ending up being alone as evidence in the novel when he woke up after getting hit in the head to a random black man in the raft the him all by himself in the middle of the ocean.Phillip responded by being frightened because he just got lost from his parents in a boat explosion and is now with a stranger.”I closed my eyes again, maybe I was dreaming.”(Taylor 30) Phillip was now waking up from getting hit in the head 4 hours later and wakes up to some …show more content…
surprising news.”I looked around my mother, but there was no one else on the raft. Just a huge Negro, myself, and a big black and gray cat licking his haunches.”(Taylor 31) Now Phillip is probably scared out of his mind because he isn't with his mother and he is only 11 and stranded on a raft in the middle of the ocean.
Phillip demonstrated being overwhelmed toward the end of the book after experiencing a huge hurricane and losing Timothy because he was protecting Phillip as evidenced in the novel when he got tied up to a tree with Timothy on the side the waves were crashing to protect Phillip and after the blackout Phillip had during the hurricane, he woke up one time but Timothy was still alive so Phillip went to sleep with him and woke up the second time to find Timothy who is now Non Living anymore. Phillip responded to being overwhelmed when the storm first happened and him getting tied to the tree while being blind also because his only friend died right next to him.” standing with his back to the storm,Timothy put my arms through the loops of rope, and then roped himself, behind me, to the tree.”(Taylor 108) Now here is when the storm had already begun and it had been just rain and then it got worse, so Timothy made Phillip go to a palm tree and then he tied their arms around the tree but Timothy stood in front of Phillip to protect him from and debris or hard waves crashing.”He was sagging, his head down on my shoulder.Timothy, wake up”, I …show more content…
said. He did not answer.”(Taylor 110) At this point Phillip has woken up to Timothy lying cold and saggy on Philip's shoulder and at this point Phillip became depressed and sad. Phillip demonstrated independence after experiencing being blind and also being by himself on the cay as evidenced in the novel when he was able to conquer and survive on “The Cay” after Timothy's death by himself.
Phillip responds with being independent when, after Timothy being gone and him being blind, he fixed the whole island by himself, he set up all the signs for the airplanes to see he fixed all the things he truly needed to survive on his own.”There was so much to do that I hardly knew where to start. Get a campfire going, pile new wood for a signal fire, make another rain catchment for the water keg, and weave a mat of palm fibers to sleep on.”(Taylor 116) Phillip is thinking of all the materials he has to fix on the island after that big hurricane. There are so many things to fix, but there is only one person that can do it and he is also blind Phillip is going to have trouble, but he gets through it.”I accomplished a lot in three days, even putting a new edge on Timothy’s knife by honing it on coral.”(Taylor 116-117) Phillip is getting everything he needs to have and at this point he has done a lot for himself. In conclusion Phillip was found a taken back home to his family that still lived in Curacao and his friend Henrik von Boven but only occasionally Phillip said it wasn't the same as when they were
little. Phillip and his family ended up moving away from Scharloo and Curacoa because his father's work had been finished. Now Phillip has been studying charts of the Caribbean and found his island and he said “ I hope to find the lonely island where Timothy is buried.” One day Phillip will go visit Timothy once again.
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
In The Big Field, author Mike Lupica explores the theme, "Success uses motivation as fuel." Lupica portrays this theme through the main character, Hutch. Throughout the entire book, Hutch, a young boy that has just recently joined a highly talented baseball team, displays moments that exemplify this main theme. Hutch and his team have a chance to play in the stadium of the Miami Marlins, a Major League Baseball team, as long as they can keep winning games and advancing through a challenging tournament; however, Hutch's favorite position on the field, shortstop, the position located between 2nd and 3rd base, has already been filled on the team. Unfortunately, Hutch gets a demotion from shortstop, to second base, the position located between 1st base and 2nd base. Although Hutch was disappointed and melancholy about the switch in position, he was even more upset about the downgrading of leadership, since the
The production of Honky is a satirical comedy, following the lives of five people and the language of racism. While it focuses on the plot of 5 characters, the storyline was well thought out and intriguing. One actor in specific, Gerard Joseph, who played Thomas, did an exceptionally well job at conveying emotion and projecting to the audience, in my opinion. The overall directing, from the actors to the soundtrack and lightning, seem to be presented with excellent detail. Overall, this production was well done.

Julius Caesar is mentioned throughout the book, A Long Way Gone, many times. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael would be reading Julius Caesar or a soldier would be reciting some of the speeches in the play. In Chapter 12 of A Long Way Gone, Ishmael is called over to talk with Lieutenant Jabati. Then, Lieutenant Jabati showed Ishmael the book he was reading, which was Julius Caesar, and asked Ishmael if he had ever heard of the book. Ishmael had read the book in school, and began to recite a speech from the book. After this happened, Lieutenant Jabati and Corporal Gadafi used emotional arguments to motivate the people in the village to stay there and support the military. Also, Lieutenant showed all the people in the village dead bodies to help
People have goals everyday, believe it or not some people think that dreams aren't worth it. I believe that it is worth it to dream because it gives a person a goal, it makes them feel good, and it makes them stronger. I know this from The Pearl, A Cubs video, the Susan Boyle video, and We Beat the streets.
The first trait Phillip displays in the book is his naiveness. I believe so because in the first chapter on page ten, Phillip says he is “... terribly excited.” and that “War was something

Anthony Doerr’s novel All the Light We Cannot See shows the reader how children would deal with war and how it shaped who they are today. Doerr’s purpose for writing this novel is to highlight how mentally taxing the war was and that there was no permanent escape from the war. Both Marie-Laure and Werner believed they could escape the war both physically and mentally, yet their involvement in it makes it more difficult. After understanding the effect on certain individuals; the story zooms out showing how the majority
Throughout the play, Willy can be seen as a failure. When he looks back on all his past decisions, he can only blame himself for his failures as a father, provider, and as a salesman (Abbotson 43). Slowly, Willy unintentionally reveals to us his moral limitations that frustrates him which hold him back from achieving the good father figure and a successful business man, showing us a sense of failure (Moss 46). For instance, even though Willy wants so badly to be successful, he wants to bring back the love and respect that he has lost from his family, showing us that in the process of wanting to be successful he failed to keep his family in mind (Centola On-line). This can be shown when Willy is talking to Ben and he says, “He’ll call you a coward…and a damned fool” (Miller 100-101). Willy responds in a frightful manner because he doesn’t want his family, es...

In a way, The Notebook is similar to every modern day romance movie, and Noah represents the “dream man” that all the girls always imagine of having. The characters in movies are used to symbolize ideas, and in this novel, Noah represents true, faithful, committed love. Noah remains loyal to Allie even in the situation where he is unsure whether they will ever meet again or not.
