Sookan changes in many ways throughout the book Year of Impossible Goodbyes when facing with the following situations: When grandfather dies, when Mother is taking from Inchun and her at the guardhouse, and when they crossed border. Grandfather is passing away. He has given up hope that he will ever be free from the Japanese and gets sick. Right before he passes, he asked mother to share the stories about the family's history.
