Sookan changes in many ways throughout the book Year of Impossible Goodbyes when facing with the following situations: When grandfather dies, when Mother is taking from Inchun and her at the guardhouse, and when they crossed border. Grandfather is passing away. He has given up hope that he will ever be free from the Japanese and gets sick. Right before he passes, he asked mother to share the stories about the family's history. He also complements the children. Grandfather asks mother to tell the children the stories of the family." His voice barely audible, he said,' You should know some stories about your family. Not just the ancient history I taught you, and not just those Bible stories and fairy tales that your mother tells you. '"(Choi 35). Sookan becomes more …show more content…
When they cross the border they keep running to the American Red Cross tents. When they cross the border they are free but they still keep running." We cried and kept running. I did not look back to see how close the soldiers and dogs were. I to was too afraid. I could only look forward. Inchun said, panting ' Are we in the South now?'' Yes ," I said clutching his right hand tighter"(164). Taking that step to cross the border takes bravery and courage which Sookan now has. Sookan's bravery got her and her brother across the border and it got her to be the nuna until they found their father. Sookan is a strong better person because if these changes. With bravery she is able to tell her story for the whole world. With responsibility she is able to take care of her family members. Also with curiosity she is able to look at things differently. A person with responsibility, bravery, curiosity is a person who gets told over and over again. Their the people that make a difference and they help are world
Relationships have the ability to change a persons life. The relationships people have with others are the reason they became who they are as a person. In the novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford, the main character Henry faces many relationships which greatly impact his life. Henry's relationships with his father, his son, and Keiko has changed his life and made him become the person he is today.
The definition of compassion: sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. As this definition shows compassion shows concern for other that every person would love to have. In The Chosen written by Chaim Potok, Mr. Potok really presents compassion in his book. Not only does he display compassion in one of his character but in every single one he gives them compassion that is expressed in different ways. He goes into detail example of compassion with each of his characters and really emphasizes the true meaning of compassion. Three main character that he shows compassion through in different ways are, Reuven, Mr. Malter and Reb Sanders.
In these five paragraphs I will be writing about the book “Hotel on the Corner of Sweet and Bitter” written by Jamie Ford and five quotation that important and made up the theme for me. This book gives a feel a lot of different emotions. The first quote was “‘You are Chinese aren’t you,Henry? That’s fine. Be who you are, she said, turning away, a look of disappointment in her eyes. “But I’m an American’’(p. 60). This quote is important because it shows how Keiko believes even if her parents are Japanese she feels more American then Japanese since she barely spoke Japanese.
The book, Heat written by Mike Lupica, is a novel about a young boy named Michael Arroyo who faces many difficulties throughout the book, all for his right to play his beloved game of baseball. Michael lives with his dad, Papi, and his brother, Carlos. They are all Cubans who came to the United States for a better chance to follow their dreams. Papi always encourages Michael to play baseball and he always has high hopes for Michael’s career in baseball. It is right to believe in Michael so much because later he fulfills his father's dream for him. After Papi dies of heart failure, Michael still continues Papi dream for him, to be the Little League Champion. Throughout the book Michael meets two characters who have significant impacts on him,
Many of the people trying to cross the border were not given same luck. Their efforts to leave the situations they are in only cause them a different kind of pain. The lack of safety for these people was astonishing. As Jessie was, I was impressed by Anazulda’s description of living there and the realistic depiction of how it was to live there. As Natalie put, I also loved the realistic writing that Anazulda brought to this piece. She did not try to ease the tone or make it lighter than the reality of the situations. She brought the realness of what happened there to life in her writing, which I greatly admire. The imagery that Brooke points out from Borderlands from page 2 is such a clear image of being trapped within a place you cannot escape from. While I had not thought of the curtains in such a way, I understand the reasoning behind it. Curtains are supposed to provide privacy, shelter from the outside world. Yet, these steel curtains are prisons, keeping those near them from getting away. As Jessie pointed out, the United States is governed to protect the rights of each American citizen, including each of us. Nevertheless, Anazulda and many others who try to cross the border can be subjected to the rules of those who live near the borders and not the laws of the United States that are in place to protect them. I did not think about the call for unity as Natalie described until I read her essay. While she does not make light of the situations caused in the United States, she does leave this impression of hope that we can fix this. We can make it so these borders are less of walls that divide us, and we can make the journey in our country a less terrible and horrifying
Smoothing a dozen or so stones isn't going to make any difference in a battle, but it made a difference in their minds. It wasn't that they were helping in the war effort, but in their minds they weren't helping the Japanese against their will. My third example is when Sookan becomes a second mother to Inchun. This took place during the escape, and was after they had been separated from their real mother. "I felt like crying, too, but I told Inchun it would be all right"(147). This quote portrays the relationship that has formed between Sookan and her brother, Inchun. This quote also shows how far Sookan has come, from not lowering her gaze, to making dull weapons, to Escaping her bad situation and becoming a second mother to her brother. Because of these changes, Sookan is now a person who can take charge, and be a leader. She has gained trust, loyalty, and has gained a new respect from her younger brother Inchun. Sookan started off as a shy person who depended on the protection of her family. Throughout the book she was forced to make decisions that were out of her comfort zone, and because of that she become more comfortable in those situations. Anyone can make changes in their life, you just have to want to change or be in a situation that
Becoming an accepted member of a country you do not feel is your home is an immaculate task that can be intangible at times. For Nadira and her family, this task proved to be more difficult than they originally thought. For this Bangladeshi family, obtaining citizenship was problematic, but after the September 11th terrorism attacks, it seemed almost impossible. Immigrants come to the United States for many reasons, including religious freedom, a fresh beginning, or tackling the American Dream. Even though it did not feel like home, Nadira, her sister, and her parents wanted to stay here because returning to Bangladesh was not the best option for them. How did Nadira find the courage to fight for her family’s acceptance in a world that is so brutal?
...r (Ellingwood, 2004). Even after more and more cases like this one contienued to happen the U.S. government did not to try and reduce the number of migrants dying. Instead it intensified its border security consciously knowing what the outcome could be. Mexican Senate passed a resolution zeroing in on Gatekeeper and the American government: “The anti-immigration strategy implemented by the U.S. government to seal its border becomes more aggressive every day, raising the cost in human lives of those who attempt to obtain better living conditions,” the resolution stated (Ellingwood, 2004). It noted that “migrants must make their way through heavy vegetation, deep and rocky canyons, and high mountains that make the crossing difficult, slow, and dangerous. Add to this the lack of food and water and the bad climate… and the high number of deaths that the undocumented suf
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the main character, Finny, is in the infirmary room for a “shattered” leg. “...One of his legs, which had been shattered”(60). This happened when Finny and Gene were trying to jump off of the same branch into the river. Finny and Gene had been very good friends and would always hang out. Finny was very athletic and Gene was known as a nerd who tried to hang out with Finny to become popular. Gene had always looked up to FInny but as they hung out more and more Gene started to become jealous. Finny suggested that they both go and jump off of the same branch together. Suddenly Gene started to shake the branch and Finny lost his balance and fell off the branch “shattering” his leg. Gene didn’t try to save him
John Knowles in “A Separate Peace” portrayed multiple aspects of Gene’s and Finny’s friendship. Envy is the feeling or desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable attribute belonging to (someone else). Individuals start to develop envious feelings because they sense the lacking of an important piece in their lives that is necessary to complete them. Envy can not only break down an individual internally but the presence of envy in any certain relationship can be injurious and harmful to one’s health and their surroundings/environment . No emotion is more destructive to a relationship than envy.

Because of these changes Sookan is a different person because of the Japanese losing the war, Russians take over, and what happened with the guide. She has become a much braver and stronger person because she had to stay strong for her family during this frustrating time. Also she had to stay brave, so she could risk her life to find freedom. Once she got to the South she let all that show even more than
