In the short story “The Rocking Horse Winner” author D.H. Lawrence presents the main character Paul to be going through a tragic situation. Paul begins to believe that he is lucky after riding his rocking horse and predicting the racehorse winner after coming out of his trance. Being that both his mother and father have a small income when they come to realize he has a special gift they take advantage of it. Paul went to a lot of Derby Stakes races with his Uncle Oscar and every race he won. Once he made the big win all the riding of his rocking horse lead to Paul’s unexpected death. Paul made a statement to his mom saying he was a lucky person because God told him after his mom told him “That’s why its better to be born lucky than rich. If
you’re rich, you make lose your money. But if you’re lucky, you will always get more money.” We notice that there is symbolism, imagery and allegory in this story. You notice even with a small income the mother and father seem to buy things they can’t afford like Paul’s rocking horse. Lawrence senses there is something unnatural and sinister about the rocking horse. The rocking horse symbolizes Paul’s anxiety. Moving along Paul misheard his Uncle Oscar say “filthy lucker” instead of “filthy lucre” meaning to “earn or gain money in a dishonorable way.” Paul craved for his mother’s attention, so he if he gets money he will gain his mother’s love. So you know how Christ rose from the dead after three days and his death and his resurrection was the moral redemption for Christians, Paul’s was completely different even though he was a Christ like figure his death only offered money not redemption and he dies after three days of being hospitalized. This story was an outrage the ending his what got me I was filled with so many mixed emotions when I read the last quote, I almost lost my mind! I was in disbelief and confused. So many questions and thoughts just running through my head I need some more understanding of this because this just doesn’t sit well with me at all.
The novel Tangerine, written by Edward Bloor, perfectly demonstrates how a character can change their ways and learn lessons. When the protagonist, Paul Fisher, was first introduced, he was a shy, quiet kid, who never tried to change his situation. He has a terrible relationship with his brother, Erik, and is literally terrified of him and what he will do to him. In the beginning of the book, he was moving from Houston, Texas to his new home in Tangerine, Florida. In his fresh start to life in Tangerine, he learns that he shouldn’t be scared, and that he needs to start standing up for himself and letting his voice, thoughts, and opinions be heard. Even though Paul starts off scared, afraid, intimidated, and full of self doubt, he learns that he needs to change his ways and attitude towards his life, and to take action to make things right.

“The Rocking-Horse Winner” is a short story about a young boy, Paul, who has the supernatural ability to choose a winning race horse. It is not clear how the boy has this ability but he hears his mother’s voice echo in his mind saying that they are poor and so he sets out to change that. Paul takes on the stress of his mother’s greed. This short story relates to the obsession of wealth which what motivates the characters aside of neglect, faulty sense of value, opportunism and deceit. Paul believes that there is more money to be made and thus goes on a frenzy to win more, but consequently dies after falling off his rocking horse due to convulsions of a fever.
Paul, the child, knew that his family wanted money, and he knew that he was lucky, betting on the horses. Paul became partners with the gardener. He picked the horse, and the gardener placed the bet. Paul had started out with five shillings but his winnings kept adding up. When he had made 10,000 pounds he decided to give his mother 1000 pounds a year for five years. He wanted his winnings to be a secret so a lawyer handled the money. Paul saw the envelope from the lawyer and asked his mother if she had received anything good in the mail. She said "Quite moderately nice" (p. 168) in a cold voice. She liked getting the money, but she wasn't happy. She wanted more.
