‘“A hero is someone who rises above his or her… limitations to achieve something extraordinary…’” (Fingeroth 14). Danny Fingeroth's article “Review of Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us about Ourselves and Our Society”, argues that heroes surpass their limits to accomplish great feats. It is observable that heroes are those who serve as role models because they go beyond expectations to advance the world through their contributions. However, not anyone can be a hero. Every human tries to be a hero by demonstrating heroism through small acts from time to time, but what separates them from heroes is one simple trait: innovation. A hero approaches the world from a different perspective. They have the unwavering determination …show more content…
A hero is an innovator who changes the world, fueled by their passion, through their unwavering determination to achieve their dreams, yet still retain their modest nature.
Numbers are swirling. Papers are flying. The man ponders with great focus on his work. He is pursuing the greatest achievements known to man; the revolutionization of the world of mathematics. This man’s name would go down as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. His name is Leonhard Euler. Leonhard Euler lived during the 18th century in Sweden and Russia. Euler came from humble origins, initially living in a small two-room house. When Euler was 14, his father hired a math tutor for him. His father, Paul Euler, deemed that the school’s teaching was insufficient. Incidentally, Euler fell in love with the subject immediately and began pursuing an education in the realm of mathematics. It was thanks to his father that Euler developed a passion for learning. Euler not only contributed to multiple mathematical fields, but also made gigantic leaps in areas such as physics, engineering, and music theory. Some of his most famous works being: complex analysis, the gamma function, infinitude of primes, the

In a letter to a friend, Euler talked about an argument over who discovered a theorem first: “When a dispute arose over precedence in what is now known as the Euler-Maclaurin method for computing infinite sums, Euler wrote to a friend, ‘I have very little desire for anything to be detracted from the fame of the celebrated Mr. Maclaurin since he probably came upon the same theorem for summing series before me, and… deserves to be named as its first discoverer” (Derbyshire). Euler displays that he is a man of modesty through the phrase of ‘I have very little desire’. He doesn’t care if he isn’t the one credited with the theorem. He does not think much of his accomplishments but instead looks to the next one. He respects his peers and believes that his work is inferior when in reality he achieved so much more. Furthermore, Euler talks about his peer Newton in a letter to a Frankish princess: “The great Newton afterwards embraced the former system, and maintained, that the luminous rays are…” (Euler). Euler is honoring Newton and his accomplishments despite everything he accomplished through the phrase “The great Newton”. He does not take great pride in his accomplishments. Euler’s modesty shines through this example as he does not think much of his accomplishments but admires the others’ around him. Additionally, one of Euler’s contemporaries, Fuss, delineated Euler’s
Although not every hero shouts “Avengers Assemble” before a worthy deed, heroism is shown in all aspects of the everyday world. Webster Dictionary has exactly 5 definitions under the word hero and still no two people explain heroism the same. Superman and Captain America are a glimpse of the fictional characters society titles a hero. Firefighters and Military portray heroism each day in the lives of every civilian. As Sullivan and Venter stated “individuals are referred to as ‘heroes’ for seemingly different reasons” and even through endless studies the adjectives referring heroes is ever changing. Among the various ideas of what it means to be a hero, boldness and valiance capture the essence of heroism.
Recently, students of Olympian High School have stumbled upon the question, "What is a hero?" In the school's 2013 Young Minds Essay Contest, students are expected to consider universal concerns and ideas. Many times when people think of a hero, they think of Superman, Batman, and many other Marvel characters who display unattainable superpowers. However, heroes are prevalent throughout the world. A hero can be anyone who has the desire to help others, brave in dangerous situations, and does not look at exterior gain from helping others.
A hero is defined as "someone admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities". There are three categories to which all heroes can be classified into, one of which is the anti-hero genre.
What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
A hero is someone who invests their time helping others rather than themselves. They are always conscious of their surroundings and environment. Heroes help their enemies and friends regardless of the circumstances. A hero is also someone who is humble and knows when to be protective of others and themselves. Heroes are people who acknowledge flaws, and fix mistakes, those were my own definition of a hero. In “Undocumented Immigrant”, Jose Antonio Vargas tells the truth about his illegal status in the United States. Not only was he an immigrant in the United States, he was his own hero. Vargas proved that he is a hero through code switching, bravery and honesty.
A hero is a man of courage and ability who is admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. A hero is a person who does not come along very often in any time period. He is a special person, who is a step above the average person in the way that he handles any situation that may arise.
Leonhard Euler was born in Basel, Switzerland as the first born child of Paul Euler and Marguerite Brucker on April 15, 1707. Euler’s formal education started in Basel where he was sent to live with his maternal grandmother on his father’s orders. Euler's father wanted his son to follow him in working for the church and sent him to the University of Basel to prepare him in becoming a pastor. He entered the University in 1720 to gain general knowledge before moving on to more advanced studies. Euler’s pastime was used for studying theology, Greek, and Hebrew in order to become a pastor like his father. During that time at the age of thirteen Euler started gaining his masters in Philosophy at the University of Basel, and in 1723 he achieved his master degree. On his weekends, Euler was learning from Bernoulli in several subjects because Bernoulli noticed that Euler was very intelligent in all types of mathematics and it also helped that Euler’s father was a friend of the Bernoulli Family, at the time Johann Bernoulli was Europe’s best mathematician. Bernoulli would later become one of ...
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. One of the ways I see a hero is by someone being a catalyst for society change. That shows someone making a difference in life. One example shown is by Sherman Alexie where he talks about growing up reading books at home in Superman and Me. Most of the people in the reservation he grew up in didn’t feel like moving up in the world, Sherman was different than the others due to the reason that in his world a very smart Indians shows a lot of danger in their society for that even today tribes believe that “a smart Indian is dangerous” (Alexie 294). The danger of intelligence in their society means that either that they’ll no longer be a part of their society or that they could try to take over parts of their society.
It is interesting that despite the fame he achieved because of his mechanical inventions, he believed that pure mathematics was the more worthwhile pursuit. Plutarch describes his attitude:
“Thus in arithmetic, during the few months that he studied it, he made such progress that he frequently confounded his master by continually raising doubts and difficulties. He devoted some time to music … Yet though he studied so many different things, he never neglected design and working in relief, those being the things which appealed to his fancy more than any other.”
Euler was one of the mathematical giants of the 18th Century. Leonard Euler (1707-1783) was born in Basel, Switzerland. His father was a Lutheran minister and wanted him to follow his path. Euler’s interest was different however, he was a natural mathematician. Johann Bernoulli helped Euler pursue his path by convincing his father of his mathematical abilities. Bernoulli became Euler’s teacher at the St. Petersburg Academy of Science. Euler’s personal life was more on the tragic side. He married and had 13 children, but only 5 survived their infancy. It is said that Euler made some of his greatest discoveries while holding his baby
There is no argument that one of the greatest mathematicians of all time came out of Switzerland in the Eighteenth Century, by the name of Leonhard Euler (1707-1783). Switzerland was the birthplace to many pioneers in mathematics during this time, but Leonhard Euler is widely thought of as the most significant of them all. Euler’s many publications had a decisive influence on the development of mathematics, such an influence that it is still being felt to this day. He worked in basically all areas of math, such as number theory, algebra, geometry, calculus and probability. Euler also did a lot of work in physics including continuum physics and lunar theory. Euler was a true renaissance man, who studied and made discoveries in a vast number of subjects, and his theories are still being taught and studied. There is no denying that Leonhard Euler is one of the founding fathers of mathematics and modern science.
...the math world. Notations (using letters for constants and variables, replacing pi with the symbol π, and the idea of f(x)) were a great invention and they are present in almost every aspect of algebra and geometry, and he also helped to set the groundwork for many branches off the math tree, such as topology, graph theory, infitesimal calculus, and quadratic reciprocity, along with many others. He expanded the concepts of math, created new routes for the medium to go down, and introduced many theorems and ideas to mathematics. Overall, Leonhard Euler was one of the most influential and successful mathematicians that the world had ever seen. His prolific advancements in both math and science have changed the world drastically and have helped to expand upon our current knowledge, so in other words, it’s because of his learnings and works that we can learn even more.
