1. “A Bronx Tale” is a story about a young man, Cologero, who grows up in the Bronx during the 1960’s where the streets were filled with violence and racism. He was raised by his two parents. His father was a working man, a bus driver and his mother was a homemaker. They tried their best to shelter Cologero and keep him from falling victim to the hard streets of the Bronx. However, at the age of nine, Cologero grew to admire the neighborhood mobster, Sonny. One day Cologero witnessed Sonny murder a man, but once the police asked him to identify the murderer, he told the police that the guy was not a part of the lineup. Sonny was impressed by Cologero’s actions and eventually took him under his wings and introduced him to his mafia lifestyle. …show more content…
I think that choice theory is more appropriate regarding Cologero for the reason that he often thought about the consequences of his actions. He often weighs the consequences and benefits of his intended actions and makes rational decisions. An example of when Cologero made a decision where he perceived that the chances of gain outweighed any punishment or loss was when he decided to get into a stolen car with his friends with intentions of attacking the local African-American teenagers with Molotov cocktails. Another example is when he decided to spend time with Sonny and engage in his criminal lifestyle even though his parents warned him not to …show more content…
Hirschi suggested that people who strongly believe in these norms are less likely to deviate from them. In the film, Cologero’s friends participated in a lot of deviant acts that went against societal norms such as attacking innocent people and stealing. He did not participate in many of the activities his friends were into. In fact, when his friends attacked the teenagers on the bicycles instead of attacking one of the teenagers, he tried to protect him. 6. I observed a few examples of labeling. 7. I really enjoyed the movie. It was entertaining and very informative. The reason I said it is informative is because of the information I have learned in this class. It caused me to pay close attention to the characters, especially Cologero and think about his actions and the reasoning behind them. I feel that this film is definitely related to subject material discussed in class. The main character is a juvenile who engages in a lot of delinquent behaviors and activities, much like the ones we focus on in class. While watching the movie, I was easily reminded of the information we went over in the previous class which made the movie more enjoyable. Especially since I was able to view the film from a different

Sonny was brought up in this very Harlem and learned how to steal and fight his way through life. However, life fought him back at every opportunity. “By the time I was nine years old, I had been hit by a bus, thrown into the Harlem River (intentionally), hit by a car, severely beaten by a chain. And I had set the house afire” (Brown 12). Sonny’s childhood was filled with so much mayhem that it would be ridiculous for anyone to expect his turnaround into a functional adult. Nevertheless, he accomplished just that . He did it by learning from not only his mistakes, but from others as well. Seeing how everyone he knew was going to prison, dying, or becoming a junkie, Sonny decided that he wanted a better life than what the streets of Harlem could offer. Sonny grew beyond his environment until he finally stopped doing drugs, he got a job, and went to college. He overcame the low expectations of him and ended up being better than what anyone had expected. Although, his personal growth was not a quick one, it was slow, painful and has relevance throughout the entire
Throughout the story, the narrator learns how important it is to Sonny for him to care and listen to him. Sonny is vulnerable and in a state where he is getting into trouble with drugs and alcohol perhaps because he feels as though no one cares enough to help him. The narrator lives his life as a teacher while Sonny spends his days using drugs hoping someday to pursue his dreams of music. Both characters end up in a place they are meant to be; acting as family and leaning on each other for support, which is the true importance of an older brother.
The narrator had a judgemental, stereotype, predetermined way of thinking when it came to his past. The narrator's thoughts and feelings were cruel and hard for the drug addict childhood friend of Sonny's when he told him he did not want to hear his "sad story"(81). Yet, he realized they both have something in common. The narrator has Sonny's drug addiction and the friend has his own addiction to deal with. The narrator realized that everyone has a sad story.
For the most part, reviews are positive and praise this film. I completely agree with them, this film informed me of an issue I wasn’t even aware had occurred. Before watching this film and taking this class, I was naive, I believed that after we had gained our supposedly “equal rights” everything was okay. Now, I have realized the struggles Chicanos have had to face, my eyes have been opened to these injustices and made me aware that many are still occurring today. This film and class has inspired me to take action against these injustices and stand up for what I believe in.
Cyrano De Bergerac is an inspiring play based on a tragic love. The characters are revealed within unique backgrounds, creating life and depth between our imaginations. There are a variety of important characters throughout the play besides Cyrano De Bergerac. The play consists of more important characters than Christian De Neuvillette, although he is the most admirable. Three admirable qualities that Christian possessed are courtesy, modesty and bravery.

This Story takes place in Harlem, New York in the 1950’s, but is also set in a smaller world developing around the nightclub where Sonny plays. Although the story takes place in Harlem, New York, it is as much a character in the story as any of the actual people. When Sonny and the narrator head back to the narrator’s apartment when Sonny gets out of jail, he really starts to think about the street he and Sonny had grown up: “We hit 110th Street and started rolling up Lenox Avenue. And I’d known this Avenue all my life, but it seemed to me again, as it had seemed on the day I’d first heard about Sonny’s troubles, filled with a hidden menace which was its very breath of life” (292). Sonny is whom the narrator goes on about in this story and is probably one of the most important characters in this story. In this passage Sonny tries to explain his inner turmoil to the narrator: “I was all by myself at the bottom of something, stinking and sweating and crying and shakin...
The story begins with the narrator’s brother, Sonny, being arrested for using heroin. When the narrator discovers what has happened to his brother, he slowly starts to relive his past. Up to this point, the narrator had completely cut his brother and his childhood from his life. He disapproves of the past and does everything in his power to get rid of it. The narrator had become an algebra teacher and had a family who he moved to get away from the bad influences on the street. As a result, it is shown in the story that he has worked hard to maintain a good “clean” life for his family and himself. Readers can see that he has lived a good life, but at the toll of denying where he came from and even his own brother. For years, his constant aim for success had been successful. However, as the story progressed everything he knew started to fall apart.
Harlem is the setting of this story and has been a center for drugs and alcohol abuse. The initial event in this story shows that Sonny is still caught in this world. Sonny says that he is only selling drugs to make money and claims that he is no longer using. In the story the brother begins to see that Sonny has his own problems, but tries to help the people around him by using music to comfort
First, the exposition of this story starts with the narrator who discovers Sonny in the newspaper for using and selling heroin. As he reads the paper on the subway he couldn’t believe what he had read. This made him reminisce the days that
The book and the movie were both very good. The book took time to explain things like setting, people’s emotions, people’s traits, and important background information. There was no time for these explanations the movie. The book, however, had parts in the beginning where some readers could become flustered.
The Godfather is the “dark-side of the American dream story” (Turan, pp2). The film follows the practices of a fictional Italian mafia family, the Corleone’s. Though most Americans do not condone the practices of the Italian mafia, they cannot deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece. This film gave insight to a mysterious way of life that the average person does not have knowledge of. As the audience is educated about the mafia they also are introduced to many stereotypes.
Although I enjoyed the main portion of the movie, there were some obvious likes and dislikes in my opinion. I believe that I learned from this movie and it helped me understand more of what the people of that time were feeling.
New Boy is a short film that envelops the viewer into a third person character and leads viewers to experience how it feels to be an outsider “The New Boy”, the audience experiences this feeling through the Protagonist 's mind in this case “Joseph.” This short film not only focuses on the idea of bullying but also the idea of being an outsider. The positioning of the title “New Boy” on the left-hand side of the frame indicates that the new boy will be powerless.
