I believe that no one wants to be in poverty, but do you know that during the Great Depression, it is considered normal to be so poor that you’re jobless and hungry all the time? That’s what happened to Josh and Joey in No Promises in the Wind: because of their harsh father and the financial problems, they left their home to look for a job which can support the two of them. They met a lot of people, desperate people. Almost everyone was looking for a job so they could fill their stomachs. However, even desperate people were divided into two groups: some people remained positive, and the others were stressed. Throughout the book, there are three characters who were very positive considering the environment that they were in. Josh was the big …show more content…
brother in the book. Being the role model for his brother, Josh pushed on until he found a job for himself and Joey. In chapter two and three, almost immediately after they left home, Josh and Joey experienced the dangers of the society by watching their best friend, Howie getting hit and killed by an oncoming train, and getting robbed by a bunch of hoodlums. They wasn’t far away from home by then, and it was very easy for them to go back. However, Josh went on and took care of Joey. Speaking of Joey, he went on the journey with Josh. Even though he was only ten years old, Joey was determined to follow and help his brother. In chapter seven, after their twenty dollar bill got taken away because of Josh, Joey didn’t blame Josh for anything. Instead, he was able to make a joke to make the atmosphere lighter. Lonie, the stranger who eventually became like an uncle to the kids, helped them greatly even though he was in a difficult financial situation. Without Lonie, Josh and Joey would never had been as successful as they were. When Lonie learned that the boys were trying to find a job of playing piano and singing, he was happy to drove the extra miles, and spent a lot of his time on taking the boys to an interview. Also, when Joey was missing, Lonie sacrificed his free time on finding him. Those people stayed strong, and they eventually made themselves a better life. Unfortunately, not everyone in the great depression dealt with it with positivity.
Josh and Joey’s father, Stefan, was really troubled with his responsibilities of supporting his family. He was really desperate to feed his family, and he worked extra hard on finding jobs. When he couldn’t get a stable job after trying for months, he let out his stresses and anger on his own family, own children. Because he couldn’t deal with the problems positively, he literally drove his own sons out of his house. On the first day of their new job at the carnival, Josh and Joey was waken up by an annoying dwarf, Blegan. This eccentric man was a pest, and he neither welcomed the brothers nor showed them the circus. All he did was calling the brothers ‘young fools’ and insulting Pete, their boss, for hiring them to play piano. When the circus burned down, one of the brothers’ co-workers, Florinda, freaked out. She had been a dancer for her life, so she was really scared of her future when she lost her job. However, instead of planning and preparing for her next step, all she did was crying out loud uselessly, and it took Emily, one of the best clowns, thirty minutes to calm her down. Those people really should had lighten up, because they are not helping by being
negative. There are two kinds of people in the Great Depression: the ones who kept on going despite the hardships, who finally succeeded; and the ones that succumbed to the calamity and blamed it on everyone else, who didn’t achieve anything in the end, and worsened their relationships with others. If you ever feel desperate or disappointed, think about the positive people during the Great Depression: life was ten times harder for them, but no matter how hard everything was for them, they still dealt with their problems positively. If they can do it, why can’t you?
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
A character that was admirable in the novel “we all fall down” is John. John is the father of Will who is the main character, they spend nearly the entire story together looking for a way out of the world trade center during the 9/11 attacks. During the story you learn that John is very smart, brave, and respected. These are all characteristics which play a crucial role in saving lives such as his co-workers and a random lady they find on the way named ting, but mainly in the ending John and Will successfully escape.
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
Summer at Devon is easygoing as teachers mellow out and the rule enforcement dwindles, such carefree behavior represents childhood; Devon’s winter session is ultimately more strict and level, emphasizing the mood in adulthood. As the sun shines bright, tension unravels and everyone at Devon loosens up including the teachers as Gene explains on page 23, “Now on these clear June days in New Hampshire they appeared to uncoil, they seemed to believe that we were with them about half of the time, and only spent the other half trying to makes fools of them.” The summer days are filled with happy-go-lucky antics that seem to come with no serious consequence; exactly how a young child would spend everyday of his life as a youthful boy. There is no
From the hood life, ghetto neighborhood, Three African-American made a pact to become successful doctors and face the obstacles that can lead them to down fall together. The Pact, a memoir written by Dr. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt, describes their story in the 1980s of becoming doctors and the struggle that they faced. The three Young men were each other’s motivator. They followed each other’s steps and helped themselves succeed. One of them is Sampson Davis, a kid who grew up in those bad circumstances but still made it through that path and became a doctor.
People have goals everyday, believe it or not some people think that dreams aren't worth it. I believe that it is worth it to dream because it gives a person a goal, it makes them feel good, and it makes them stronger. I know this from The Pearl, A Cubs video, the Susan Boyle video, and We Beat the streets.
The Power of an Author Authors have the ability justify the worst actions. Authors have a way of romanticizing certain situations in order to convey a specific message. A good author has power to influence the reader into believing whatever it is the author wants. When it comes to the story of Hannah Dustan, authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier have romanticized her captivity story along with the actions she took throughout her journey. Introducing a character that will be seen in the story is one of the most vital parts when creating a piece of literature.
I wasn’t poor but I wasn’t rich either, I was surrounded by an environment in which many people where in need of shelter and food because their families could not afford both. Just like poverty played a major role in my life, so did an ambitious and hardworking environment. Because those people I would see every day on the streets without food or a home, were the ones that had a bigger passion than anyone else, to one day be able to have a stable job and home for their family. This has shaped me to be who I am today, because I greatly appreciate what I have and take advantage of the opportunities I am given because not everyone is lucky enough to have what one
For some individuals, this instability takes the form of drug or alcohol abuse. Whether it’s Lamar smoking marijuana with his son and his friends or more extreme examples such as Ned and Pam’s crack addiction and then subsequent incarceration, substance abuse is not uncommon in a system of poverty (23, 49). Desmond reasons this sort of behavior, writing “The distance between grinding poverty and even stable poverty could be so vast that those at the bottom had little hope of climbing out even if they pinched every penny. So they chose not to. Instead, they tried to survive in color, to season the suffering with pleasure” (219). While some individuals mask their emotions with self-medication, the rest suffer through the full emotional strain of poverty or eviction. Desmond reports that half of all recently evicted mothers exhibit several symptoms of clinical depression (298). Furthermore, he reveals that suicides associated with evictions or foreclosures doubled between 2005 and 2010 when housing costs were on the
Poverty doesn't have to effect the people's personalities that I consumes like most of the Youngers. Mama, Ruth, and Beneatha did not let being poor make them envy any one who had money. Walter on the other hand was sick of the way he and his family had to live. He was fed-up and was desperate to make money any way he could think of for his family.
The Chosen by Chaim Potok is a phenomenal novel about two Jewish boys who live in two very discrepant worlds because of the impressions of their fathers. The Hasidic Rabbi, Reb Saunders wants his son, Danny Saunders, to perdure the family legacy and become a Rabbi. Mr. Malter, Reuven’s father, is an Orthodox Jew who is easy going about what he wants his son to do. Throughout the book, both Reuven and Danny face problems and sufferings that helped them both to become stronger and get through the hard times they faced.
It is expected that within a span of four years drastic changes can occur to any person. An example of such case is our experience throughout four years of high school or college; it is a time in which each obstacle that we surpass will become an experience that builds character. We have all left our childhood behind, but we have yet to taste the full essence of adulthood. Within these years of being cast astray to find our own paths, it is common for us students to experience regular episodes of anxiety, stress, and crippling self-doubt.
I cannot honestly say I have ever known a day of poverty in my life. There has never been a time when I have gone to bed hungry or had to worry about crime in my neighborhood. I wouldn’t say I’ve lived a sheltered life, my environment just doesn’t allow for such things. Regardless of whether I am “better off” than the kids in The Pact, I know the remarkable things that good friendships can do for one’s life. Whenever I am feeling a little down, or I’ve had a bad day, a friend wil... ...

Do the poor in this country have a choice not to be poor? Do the less fortunate have the same access to opportunities as the middle and upper classes? Do government programs designed to help the impoverished actually keep them in the lower ranks? These are all difficult and controversial questions. Conservatives and Liberals constantly battle over these issues in our state and federal governments. Local and national news media provide limited insight to the root causes and effects of the nation’s poor. There is obviously no simple solution to resolve the plight of these often forgotten citizens. Most of us associate poor as being in a class below the poverty line. In fact there are many levels of poverty ranging from those with nothing, to those with enough to survive but too little to move up. I believe many of our nation’s poor are so by their own doing. I will share observations and personal experiences to support the argument that being poor often is a result of individual choice. One needs merely inspiration and perspiration to move up the socio-economic ladder in the United States. We live in the land of opportunity where anyone with the drive and determination to succeed often can.
