Character Analysis Miss Strangeworth

When thinking of roses we think of how beautiful they are and what a sweet gesture they are, but we sometimes forget about the thorny stem. We can be blinded by the beauty of the flower that we get poked by the thorns, and that is how I see Miss Strangeworth in this story. From the outside Miss Strangeworth looks like a nice person but in reality she is prideful and judgmental. In the beginning of the story the other shows Miss Strangeworth as a nice and respected old lady, but as the story goes on the author shows who she really is. In this story Miss Strangeworth is an old lady who thinks she has a duty to inform the people in her town of the evil going on in the town, but when she does it not only impacted them but it impacted her as well. It also seemed she was well liked by the people in the town when “she came into the grocery, half a dozen people turned away from the shelves and counters to wave at her or call out good morning”(1). Other actions of hers started to show her thorns as the story goes on. The way Miss Strangeworth thought about people started to show her thorns. Mrs. Strangeworth was quick to judge “…wondered, glancing at her quickly, if she had been taking proper care of herself “(2). Writing those letters really showed who she is. She thought “as long as evil existed unchecked in the world, it was Miss Strangeworth’s duty to keep her town alert to it (5). It is sad that she was blinded by thinking she was doing what is right to expose evil when really she is creating evil. She thought she was the pretty soft petal of a rose, but in reality she was the thorny stem. In the end she gets poked by her own thorns she
