"Luck Meets Opportunity" Have you ever met people who seem to be lucky all the time? They make a lot of money. They drive exquisite cars and live in the best houses. No matter where they are, they always seem to come out perfectly. Have you ever wondered what their secret is and how are they so lucky? There is no better person than asking Oprah. Oprah suggests that there is really no such thing as luck. According to her, everything that happens in a person's life prepares them for lucky circumstances. Oprah said, "Luck is preparation meeting opportunity." In other words, the odds of being lucky increase when people set goals, take the steps to reach them, and position themselves for meeting opportunity. I agree with Oprah. Three people I consider luckily are the boxer Floyd May-weather, my radiology instructor, and my brother. …show more content…
He always has tons of money. He wins most of his fights. May-weather drives the most expensive cars and lives in luxury million dollar homes. To see him now, it appears that he never had a bad day. His kids even have the most expensive toys. He recently bought his son a Rolls Royce golf cart to drive. Reality is that things have not always been so good. When he was young, he was poor. He even considered quitting school and getting a job to support his mom, but she discouraged him from being a dropout. His grandmother encouraged him to keep going to the gym to practice his craft. His hard work has paid off. He is a boxing champion who lives a lucky life. He has fame and fortune. It is all because of
In these five paragraphs I will be writing about the book “Hotel on the Corner of Sweet and Bitter” written by Jamie Ford and five quotation that important and made up the theme for me. This book gives a feel a lot of different emotions. The first quote was “‘You are Chinese aren’t you,Henry? That’s fine. Be who you are, she said, turning away, a look of disappointment in her eyes. “But I’m an American’’(p. 60). This quote is important because it shows how Keiko believes even if her parents are Japanese she feels more American then Japanese since she barely spoke Japanese.
When Michael Oher was a child, his life was a mayhem of homelessness and starvation. If you take a glimpse at him now, you never would have suspected that he came from such an unfortunate beginning. However, his book I Beat The Odds reveals certain times in his life where had he not made such phenomenal decisions for his future he might have not succeeded. This story also deciphers the reason he is so spectacular today, because of his past. Flashing back to Michael’s childhood, it is observed that Michael had an abounding amount of siblings in his family. He was one of the younger brothers, yet he felt the responsibility to foster his siblings at a very young age. His family never said “I love you” and they by no means had enough food to go around. His
In his book “Outliers”, Malcolm Gladwell emphasizes a lot about luck by illustrating the importance of birthdays for Hockey players, by comparing the success of geniuses with super high intelligence, and by showing how successful people got opportunities and support because of their luck. At a glance, every reader can find out luck plays a crucial role in success, but does Gladwell wants us to believe luck is all that matters? Although he emphasizes a lot about luck in his book, I don’t think he believes that successful people are just lucky because every successful people he introduces in his book are not just lucky in their lives, but are great hard workers and risk takers.
The Chosen by Chaim Potok is a phenomenal novel about two Jewish boys who live in two very discrepant worlds because of the impressions of their fathers. The Hasidic Rabbi, Reb Saunders wants his son, Danny Saunders, to perdure the family legacy and become a Rabbi. Mr. Malter, Reuven’s father, is an Orthodox Jew who is easy going about what he wants his son to do. Throughout the book, both Reuven and Danny face problems and sufferings that helped them both to become stronger and get through the hard times they faced.
Imagine, every day a person struggles with controlling untypical behavior caused by some sort of psychiatric disorder. For many, this is not imaginative this is reality. The character Pat in the movie Silver Linings Playbook, is a great example of someone who struggles daily to control their untypical behavior. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder also known as OCD, is a disorder commonly misunderstood and can be misused in social context. Most people do not understand this disorder and most people use this disorder to discriminate against those struggling from it. I believe that Pat in this movie portrays a good example of an individual struggling with OCD.
As I was growing up one of my favorite television shows was Good Luck Charlie. Good Luck Charlie features a large family consisting of Amy and Bob Duncan who live with their four children Teddy, TJ, Gabe, and Charlie. Throughout the show Teddy documents life advice for her baby sister Charlie through a video camera. Good Luck Charlie relates to me because I come from a large, busy family, I am the eldest child of three in which I hold a lot of responsibility, and I document most of my life through pictures and journals in hopes that my siblings use my experiences to make their experiences easier just as Teddy.
In the novel Let the Great World Spin, the author, Colum McCann, shows that the kind of love Tilly is in is only for the other partner’s personal good. Tilly is a hooker attempting to live on the streets and make money, but does have a husband, called TuKwik. Tilly says, “TuKwik was flash (...) was coming through” (202-203). Tilly has been with quite a few men, however she stays loyal to only one, which is TuKwik. She explains them as a couple like she was ‘on his arm like a piece of jewelry’. Jewelry is often used to show off wealth, therefore TuKwik is only using Tilly to expose her great looks next to him. She also states that she is one of his five wives. Often people stay faithful and only have one wife, however TuKwik is not faithful
It is expected that within a span of four years drastic changes can occur to any person. An example of such case is our experience throughout four years of high school or college; it is a time in which each obstacle that we surpass will become an experience that builds character. We have all left our childhood behind, but we have yet to taste the full essence of adulthood. Within these years of being cast astray to find our own paths, it is common for us students to experience regular episodes of anxiety, stress, and crippling self-doubt.
Muhammad Ali was not the kind of person that gets taken away with fame and money. He is a simple, unsophisticated person with a very loving heart, and very determined (Hauser 186). He did not care much about himself, he enjoyed making people happy. While training, he let people come and see him, charging them to see the show. Doing so, he earned about $1000 a day. After the ...
The protagonist of Most Likely to Succeed is Katherine “Kaye” Beale Gordon. She is a senior in high school, vice-president of student council, and head cheerleader at her high school. She is the epitome of what every high school girl imagines: popular and in control. Kaye exhibits the two character traits of proactiveness and prestigiousness. Kaye exemplifies proactiveness by already having her life planned out, for after high school. Throughout Most Likely to Succeed, Kaye continuously talks about what she planned. At the beginning, she talks about having plans with her highschool sweetheart, Aidan. They planned to “establish [their] banking careers, and then getting married,” for which she had known the plan for “three
...uild a quick fortune through luck rather than through hard work and motivation. Unfortunately this method does not usually work regardless of how persistent the gambler is. Mostly, people end up gambling themselves to bankruptcy. If relying solely on luck and ignoring perseverance, then gaining the American Dream will often become impossible.
In the Silver Linings Playbook, there is once case that stood out to me from all the rest. The main character, Pat, is diagnosed with having bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder can be broken down into bipolar I and bipolar II. In the movie, it doesn’t state which type Pat has but if I could take a guess, I would probably say bipolar I. People with bipolar I disorder have full manic and major depressive episodes.
society in Kingdom Come. One panel shows Superman as a massive hologram, towering over the metahumans (Waid and Ross 116). His mighty figure is looking down to show his dominance and superiority. He has his arms folded to symbolize how upset and closed off from disagreement he is. The powerful stare Superman gives the metahumans represents that he sees himself as a godly figure that they must obey. After Superman’s recording insists that the metahumans are thrown in the Gulag for education, not punishment, 666 retorts in frustration, “How many different ways can you spew that Pollyanna crap?” (Waid and Ross 117). The Pollyanna principle is the tendency for people to remember pleasant items more accurately than unpleasant ones. This exemplifies
