Is Frankenstein a hero or a Villain? Can someone actually be a hero or a villain? When do you know that someone is evil? When do you know someone is good? Can a person play god? Can a person be a monster? Frankenstein had created a monster who didn’t have the appearance or the mind to live in a society that they had. Mary Shelley wrote the book “Frankenstein” and had , an imagination that no one could possibly imagine. The story was written as a science fiction story and many people found it as Frankenstein was trying to play god. The doctor was truthfully a villain. There are three reasons why frankenstein is a villain, abandonment, cowardness, and fear.

He let the monster go into a cruel world without any help at all and let him get attacked emotionally. Frankenstein was the one who had created the monster and still took no responsibility for what the monster was capable of doing. The monster had ran away in the story trying to get away from all of the town, because of how harsh they were to him. Then Frankenstein still had done nothing for him, he had no remorse and no heart toward his creation. “We were brought up together” on page 22 it was said. Many people understand that we are brought up together by our parents and God. The real question of the story is; can a monster create a monster? The answer is yes they can. Frankenstein was abandoning a creation that he made if that’s not a villain then someone has to speak up. Obviously, Frankenstein can abandon a monster when they need them the most, but won’t abandon the society for what they did to the monster. Second of all, being a coward is one trait that you can never really recover.
Once someone has turned away from something or someone, people tend to give up on them. Frankenstein had turned away from the monster because he felt bad for what he had made. He didn’t try to fix his mistake all he did was walk away when the monster needed help. A coward is not someone who is strong and independent, it’s someone who doesn’t know how to fix a mistake that they made. When Mary Shelley wrote the line “Doth walk in fear and dread” on p.44, she didn’t write those words for someone to become a coward and walk away from the creation that was made. Most people, don’t see the mean streak in doctor Frankenstein and then again most people do. In a similarity it was like a father that had left his child and didn’t think twice about it. When Frankenstein left his creation he didn’t feel remorse for the fact that society had laughed at his face. Clearly, life isn’t easy, but don’t walk away from an obstacle because someone is too scared to face it.
Last but not least, fear it creeps up on people when they least expect it and sometimes they just don’t know what to do. Frankenstein did indeed have a tremendous amount of fear while “trying” to stop the monster. People didn’t express kindness when they saw something or someone different. Frankenstein had a fear to stop a creation that he made because of his family. In the end his brother, wife, and anyone else was gone including Frankenstein.
THe fear was nothing a creator can destroy as much as they create and they get too scared so they run away and go hide. “About half a dozen men came forward” p.153 was wrote and in a way if half dozen men can confront their flaws, but one man can’t keep up with his creation. Father's can keep up with their children that they created. In all honesty Frankenstein was fearful of the monster because he didn’t know how to help him without hurting him. Lastly, fear, cowardness, and abandonment can have many effects on people,but Frankenstein was not a hero. He stood around and let that monster get loose he didn’t try to stop him. He ran into the monster and talked for a little while and then left and let him terrorize the country. The man ran away and then stepped up when saying no to the mate that the monster wanted. How many people would run from their own creation? Why would they run from their own creation? Frankenstein is no hero, he is a villain, but only in ways that we don’t see at first. Clearly, there is too many people in this world running from the problems that they have caused.
Victor Frankenstein may be the leading character in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but a hero he is not. He is self-centered and loveless, and there is nothing heroic about him. There is a scene in Chapter twenty-four where Captain Walton is confronted by his crew to turn southwards and return home should the ice break apart and allow them the way. Frankenstein rouses himself and finds the strength to argue to the Captain that they should continue northwards, or suffer returning home "with the stigma of disgrace marked on your brows." He quite obviously has alterior motives and if he were not the eloquent, manipulative creature he so egotistically accuses his creature of being, he might not have moved the Captain and the men so much that they are blind to the true source of his passion. Unfortunately for Frankenstein, the crew, (however "moved") stand firm in their position. Yet the things he says in his motivational speech are prime examples of the extent to which Frankenstein is blind to his own faults and yet will jump at the chance to harangue others. He is so self-centered that his lack of interaction and love for others after his experiment has been completed, would barely qualify him as a person, if the difference between being human and being a person lies in the ability to have relationships with others.
Literature often works as depicted act of betrayal. Many people, friends, and family may portray a protagonist, but they will likewise be guilty of treachery or betrayal to their own values. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, there is acts of betrayal between Victor Frankenstein and the monster. In the Novel Victor Frankenstein is a betrayal of life itself because it should be given naturally and not created by a scientist man. The monster is actually the one who is majorly betrayed, he may look like a hideous dangerous monster on the outside but, not one within himself. From the beginning of the novel, Victor betrays the monster, and this betrayal is seen on many levels throughout the novel. The tragic figure in Mary Shelley’s horror novel Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein, is truly the instrument of betrayal to his creation of the monster because life should be given naturally not by creation of suffering and horrific which is made by man.
As Frankenstein is enroute to his pursuit of gaining more knowledge, he states, “I wished, as it were, to procrastinate all that related to my feelings of affection until the great object, which swallowed up every habit of my nature, should be completed” (Shelley 41). Frankenstein’s decision in allowing his intellectual ambitions to overpower everything else in his life leads him to be blinded to the dangers of creating life. He isolates himself from his society when creating the monster, letting himself be immersed in his creation while being driven by his passions, allowing nobody to be near him. The fact that he allows this creation of a monster to consume his total being reveals how blinded he is to the immorality of stepping outside the boundaries of science and defying nature. His goal in striving to achieve what wants to in placing man over nature makes him lose his sense of self as all he is focused on is the final product of his creation. He starts to realize his own faults as after he has created the monster, he becomes very ill and states, “The form of the monster on whom I had bestowed existence was forever before my eyes, and I raved incessantly concerning him” (48). The fact that Frankenstein’s creation turns on him and murders innocent people is never overlooked; it has been the subject of virtually every popularization of the novel. What is not often acknowledged is the fact that Frankenstein himself embodies some of the worst traits of humankind. He is self-centered, with little real love for those who care about him; he is prejudiced, inflexible and cannot forgive, even in death. While some of these traits could be forgivable, to own and flaunt them all should be enough to remind a careful reader that there are two "monsters" in Frankenstein.
Imagine spending months or even years perfecting a drawing. You gathered the most exquisite paints, brushes, and paper only to find out that the final product has wonky lines, irregular patterns, and is just completely not what you expected. Frankenstein could be feeling the same. For him, the monster could then symbolize shame or guilt because he vilely shut out his entire family for years, for something that is the complete opposite of what he envisioned. Thus, Frankenstein has to avoid it since it reminds him of the defeat and failure. Failure is an egotistical man’s biggest fear.
Victor Frankenstein is a complex character that we have come to learn more about while reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. He is a man that seems to have this fervent desire to do what suits him best without regard to what others may think. Victor’s brother William has been murdered and a childhood friend is to pay the price of his death. After sighting what is assumed as the creature created by Victor, Victor is panged with guilt that these events are his fault. If he is correct, then he would be justified in feeling this way because Victor is selfish, stubborn, and lacks compassion for others around him. Victors actions all lead up to the demise of William and Justine.
“Frankenstein” by Mary Shelly explores the concept of the body, life, ‘the self’ and most of importantly humanity, which is repeatedly questioned throughout the novel. The definition of humanity is the quality of being humane or in other words someone that can feel or possess compassion. Despite all the facts against the “monster” in “Frankenstein” he is indeed what one would consider being human. Humanity isn’t just about ones physical appearance but also includes intellect and emotion. Some people argue that the “monster” is not a human for he was not a creature that was born from “God” or from a human body. That being said, the “monster” is not only able to speak different languages, he can also show empathy - one of many distinct traits that set humans apart from the animals. Both the “monster” and his creator, Victor, hold anger and feel a sense of suffering throughout the novel. Victor is a good person with good intentions just like most individuals, but makes the mistake of getting swept up into his passion of science and without thinking of the consequences he creates a “monster”. After completing his science project, he attempts to move forward with his life, however his past – i.e., the “monster” continues to follow and someone haunt him. While one shouldn’t fault or place blame on Frankenstein for his mistakes, you also can’t help but feel somewhat sympathetic for the creature. Frankenstein just wants to feel accepted and loved, he can’t help the way he treats people for he’s only mimicking how people have treated him, which in most cases solely based on his appearance. A monster is not a monster unless he intentionally wants to hurt many and his plans are to hurt many. In Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, the monster is portrayed as an evil, hideous creature through everyone’s eyes. Victor Frankenstein creates a monster and once he brings him to life he abandoned him, leaving him to learn and discover the world by himself. The monster has to learn his way around society while being rejected by society because of this looks. Frankenstein’s monster is seen as evil because the way people treated him caused him to act out. The monster is not inherently evil because he helps others, has emotions, and does not fight back when he is attacked.
Frankenstein was written by Mary Shelley and is a gothic horror. It is an important book because it tells us about when scientists and doctors started to experiment with bringing back the dead. I will look at arguments for both sides of the question. This is an important question because there is a strong argument for both sides and in a lot of modern films about him he is portrayed as a villain who like nothing more than killing and lightening.
Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein centers around a creator who rejects his own creation. The plot thickens as Victor Frankenstein turns his back on his creation out of fear and regret. The monster is cast out alone to figure out the world and as a result of a life with no love, he turns evil. Shelley seems to urge the reader to try a relate with this monster and avoid just seeing him as an evil being beyond repentance. There is no doubt that the monster is in fact evil; however, the monster’s evilness stems from rejection from his creator.
In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley combines three separate stories involving three different characters--Walton, Victor, and Frankenstein's monster. Though the reader is hearing the stories through Walton's perspective, Walton strives for accuracy in relating the details, as he says, "I have resolved every night,...to record, as nearly as possible in his [Victor's] own words, what he has related during the day" (Shelley 37). Shelley's shift in point of view allows for direct comparison and contrast between the characters, as the reader hears their stories through the use of first person. As the reader compares the monster's circumstances to those of Victor and Walton, the reader's sympathy for the monster greatly increases.
Victor Frankenstein is originally a happy character that loves to learn and read a large variety of books. He was a fiery individual who sought to understand all knowledge; regardless of how practical the information was. Evidence of this is when his father tells him not to worry about fictional writers like Cornelius Agrippa. Yet, Frankenstein states, “But here were books, and here were men who had penetrated deeper and knew more. I took their word for all that they averred, and I became their disciple” (21). Frankenstein embodies the movement in science to understand everything, and that is not necessarily a good thing (Storment 2). Frankenstein only understands that this train of thought is bad when he reaches the pinnacle of knowledge and produces the creature. The fruits of Frankenstein’s labor end up costing him the lives of his friends and family, as well as his own sanity. The feeling of guilt thrives in Frankenstein because he knows his work was the direct cause of the chaos in his life. In Frankenstein’s case, his goal of total enlightenment led to his pitiful demise. Frankenstein’s creature was not originally a monster. At first, The Monster is very kind and sympathetic. He has a good heart, as shown when he collected firewood for the family on the brink of poverty. Like every other human creation, he was not born a murderer. All the Monster wanted was to be accepted and loved by Victor Frankenstein and the other humans but instead he was judged by his appearance and considered to be dangerous. The Monster says, “like Adam, I was created apparently united by no link to any other being in existence…many times I considered Satan as the fitter emblem of my condition; for often, like him, when I viewed the bliss of my protectors, the bitter gall of envy rose within me” (page 105). This line is an important part of the novel because the Monster lets it be known how like Adam he was created into this world completely abandoned and like Satan he is angry with those people who have found contentment and satisfaction in their lives. The rejection and unwelcome feeling he is faced with, is the main reason the Monster becomes a killer. His desire to be a father could have been satisfied through adoption or a surrogate, but Victor’s interest in the creation of life lead him to take matters into his own hands. The months of Victor’s hard work had finally come to a head when the creature calmly sat up from the operating table and stared, with deep-yellow eyes, into the optics of his creator.
In Mary Shelley 's timeless novel Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein refers to his creation as an abhorrent "monster". However, throughout relating his tale to Captain Walton, Frankenstein shows that he is the true monster. While "the monster" is overcome with a desire for revenge and a feeling of hatred towards man only after he is treated like a monster, Victor acts heartlessly while putting himself before anyone else, the true definition of a monster. Throughout the novel, Frankenstein demonstrates his selfish nature; his creation, on the other hand, shows selflessness and generosity even after being shunned by man. Shelley makes is very evident that although Frankenstein 's creation is referred to as "the monster", Victor Frankenstein is the real monster in Frankenstein.
