“I’m a Goddamn Madman” In J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher In The Rye, Holden Caulfield is kicked out of Pencey Prep due to his grades. Instead of going home, he stays in a hotel until break to avoid going home to tell his parents he got kicked out of yet another school. He goes through a lot over the several days of getting kicked out. He runs into old faces during his emotional, drama filled adventure. Holden Caulfield is a lonely teenager trying to find love and affection in others but is withdrawn and defeated because he believes there is so much phoniness in the world. It includes people like Stradlater who may put false faces on for public, thinking highly of themselves, telling exaggerated stories, acting suave with women, or having hidden or disgusting habits and so on. Holden doesn’t fit well into society, so he believes anyone who doesn’t click well with him must have a phony feature. All he wants to do is fit in! He wants friends who he can share stories with and people who will have his back like everyone else has each other’s backs. He tries to find love in all these places and in these places are nothing but people who Holden despises and thinks are fake. On the train home, Holden runs into one of his classmate’s mom. He lies to her about how well her son is doing in school and how much of a good person he is. “Then I started reading this timetable I had in my pocket. Just to stop lying. Once I get started, I can go on for hours if I feel like it. No kidding.
