Ned Kelly was a remarkable man, he was bold, brave, astonishing and saved those who were in need. The novel ‘Black Snake-the Daring of Ned Kelly’ reveals a man who stood up for the good and against the bad; he at no time ever took from the poor only the rich. Ned Kelly had a quite a few times to show his malevolent side but chose to lead his life into the light not the dark. Edward Ned Kelly (1855-1880), an Australian bushranger, was born in June, 1855, at Beveridge, Victoria. He was the eldest son of John Red Kelly, an immigrant from Ireland, and Ellen, also an immigrant from Ireland. Ned Kelly was most known for stealing horses and robbing from banks. Some people think that Ned Kelly is a victim because he and his family were victimized by police. The Kelly’s were blamed for many crimes hey didn’t commit, Fitzpatrick abused Kate Kelly and got away with it and Ned’s mum (Ellen Quinn Kelly) was gaoled for a crime she didn’t commit.
A human being develops and grows throughout their life through many challenges and sometimes it takes an event in one’s life to change a person. In the novel “The Caine Mutiny” by Herman Wouk, is a novel about Willie Keith, a chubby and well educated son from an upper class family who joins the Navy. Willie goes into the Columbia University School of Journalism, which has been converted for the war effort. He is almost rejected because of his physical reasons of not being fit, but his Princeton background saves him from being rejected. As soon as he stepped in this navy life and went through a long journey with the navy crew , Willie became more independent, responsible and courageous.

Many had called Ned Kelly a murderous thug, but what people say doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right. Ned was born in 1854, died at the age of 26 in 1880 and an Irish immigrant. Many have recognised Ned’s infamousness due to his action and his disgraceful family who had said to do many wrongs. Yes, Ned’s action clearly show a villain., but If you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, then you shouldn’t judge a person by his action. Ned’s mother was taken to jail for self-defence, his father died when Ned was 12-year-old further more every now and then police would accuse Ned and his family for horse thief or cattle stealing. These reason can clearly state that Ned’s a victim who played the role of villain.
Some people are born to be heroes. Some people may be forgotten heroes. Some people are born not to be heroes at all. In ways they are similar and in some ways they are different. John Campbell’s Hero’s Journey Monomyth shows the certain stages that a hero would traditionally go through to be qualified as a hero. Elie Wiesel is not a monomyth hero, because he does not follow the correct steps and does not hit enough steps to be considered a monomythic hero.
Ned Kelly was a notorious bushranger in Australia. People formed thoughts on Ned Kelly after his death. Some doubted him, as a villain who committed all behaviours of crime. Some believed he was a hero who fought for the fairness of people. Whereas, many saw him as a victim with no community status. I strongly believe that Ned Kelly was indeed a victim, who suffered unjust sentence and whom police treated very unfairly. He had low economic status and he was not able to defend his rights. If you look back and read through his history, you would find the pages of evidence and the numerous reasons why Ned Kelly was the dreadful person everyone thought he was. The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.
In the play MacBeth, by William Shakespeare and the film The Dark Knight directed by Christopher Nolan, MacBeth and Harvey Dent are considered to be tragic heros. A tragic hero is someone who is born of noble a birth. That means that he is born and expected to do many things in his life that are supposed to be great. A tragic hero has a lot of potential. They also almost always has a tragic flaw (imperfection). Both characters have a lot of these traits that make them tragic heros. If people never had too much power, then they would not have became a tragic hero.
In this essay I have only shown three, but there are so many more and the traits of a hero are not only restricted to people who save lives, chase bad guys, or change the world. He overcame constant pressures with his determination, led a whole team with his outstanding leadership, and never gave up thanks to his passion. He is a hero to many, no cape, or superpowers needed. The tragic death of a flawed hero can redeem and save both the hero and those who look up to him/her. In Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a man named Randall Patrick McMurphy saves a ward and its patients from self destruction. The power hungry Nurse Ratched rules as Chief Bromden narrates. In a similar fashion, Abigail Williams reigns over Salem. Her and her group of girls will eventually be taken down by John Proctor in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Both novels end with the downfall and deaths of McMurphy and Proctor, helping to save the ward and Salem. Randall Patrick McMurphy and John Proctor begin their journey as selfish but grow to become heroes along the way.
Jon Daly was a great American hero and during his exploits in the war he became a changed man. He put himself in harms way countless times for the greater good of his squad. Even though he may have been less than extraordinary as a child and in his adolescent years he showed that he truly was a man for others. He showed that with the right attitude anyone can make something of themselves even if they have been less than great as a child. Jon Daly was a misfit as a child but through proper habit formation he made himself into a respectable man that would put himself in harms way for the good of his squad.
As I have already mentioned, Inigo is one of these characters. Another would be Fezzik. When we first meet him, he seems to be nothing more than a giant who works for an evil man. Though this is somewhat true, our opinion is greatly altered when we learn his backstory. After suffering bullying and a rough childhood of his parents forcing him to fight, Fezzik becomes someone the reader feels a strong compassion for. His love of rhymes makes him much gentler, and his desire to do the right thing and help his friends is quite endearing. All in all, he becomes a character who instead of being a villain, is most definitely a hero.
There are heroes today like Peter Tatchell. Peter is a supporter of gay rights. And just like Frank he is risking his safety to make sure others feel safe and welcome. Even though he isn’t saving lives like Frank did he is still making a difference in today’s society. There are people like Frank around everyday that would do the same thing as he did. He is a hero and a legend for all of the things that he did. There will always be someone out there just like Frank and all it takes to notice it is a situation that they are needed in.
The second quality of a folk hero is the willingness to leave the familiar in order to quest for something of value. They don’t have to leave their country, but they just need to be open to the unknown, willing to risk it all to attain a worthy goal. They have to be willing to give up money and fame, which is very rare for someone to do in today’s world. In today’s society it seems that only ordinary people are risking their lives and no one hears about them. So, our role models and heroes in the modern world should be those risking their lives for us instead of someone who memorizes lines and then gets paid for it.
Atticus Finch, from To Kill A Mockingbird, once said, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting this idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” History has seen many true heroes --both real and fictional-- such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, and Atticus Finch. True heroes appear to have three common attributes: being meticulous, courageous, and having a desire to rectify a society. Among these heroes is Prince Hamlet. While some people may state that Hamlet is a coward because he isn’t rash, he sits in self-pity, and he has murderous tendencies, he is, in fact, a hero due to being meticulous, courageous, and his desire to rectify Denmark.
