Beowulf is the main character of the same named Old English poem written by an unknown author. In this poem, we follow Beowulf's life from when he was young to his old age and death. Throughout his life, he has done many brave deeds and saved many lives by killing monsters, and at the same time, he remained humble and a very moral person. He truly was a hero all his life – when he was young and bold, and when he was old and wise. The poem starts with a prologue telling us about the rise of the Danish nation and the family tree of Danish nobility, from Sheaf Sheafson to Hrohtgar, who built a great mead-hall called Heorot. The hall and its inhabitants are terrorized by a monster named Grendel for twelve whole years. Hearing of Hrothgar’s hardships, Beowulf, Hygelac's thane, decides to aid the Danes. He is „the mightiest man on earth, highborn and powerful“ (lines 197, 198) and „there was no one else like him alive“ (line 196), so it is natural that he is the one coming to help. He is courageous, noble and generous, and at the same time is also kind. He does not flee from battle; he leaps into it, knowing his great strength, so he can help those around him and purge the world from evil. He also evolves as a hero - at the end he fights the dragon as a necessity; there is no other way to save his people, and saving them was very important to him, good king as he was; but at the beginning, a great portion of his motivation was his ambitiousness and need for revenge. We can see this evolution, from young to old, from hungry for glory to wise and doing what’s best for his people.
