The story starts with him in the middle of a war and includes nonstop walking for months. After eating a delicious topi, Salva was throwing up non stop and he stayed up all night vomiting(Page 36). Who is not miserable while throwing up all night. The reader here can infer that Slava is miserable just from their own experience of being sick and vomiting.Salva always walks and walks and walks never stopping for food, unless there is enough for the whole group. It has been a month of walking and all he wants to know now is where his family is, nothing else (Page 37). The reader can infer that in this section Salva is miserable for two reasons. One he has been walking for about a month and two he has no idea where his family is. In summation, Salva is miserable in numerous ways throughout the story of “A Long Walk to
To begin, Salva went through a dangerous war but he managed to be mentally strong. When Salva’s uncle had died, the group of refugees that Salva had been traveling with started treated Salva as extra weight. Salva made the choice to keep going. He was determined to prove to the group that he is not useless and can be independent. In Chapter 11 it says, “The way they were treating him made Salva feel stronger still. There is noone left to help me. They think I am weak and useless. Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong and I will prove it.”(66) This quote shows that Salva became stronger because it helped Salva realize not to terror his life and that he does not need to depend on anyone and that he is more than what they see and think of him.
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
Jimmy Dean once advised, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination.” The novel A Long Walk to Water authored by Linda Sue Park, is a work of realistic historical fiction and a dual narrative focused on adjusting to change. In Sandra Benitez’s novel, A Place Where the Sea Remembers, we get to know the lives and struggles of the residents of a small town in Mexico. Each character faces a conflict that affects the course of his or her life. The conflict I chose was the conflict that Marta was with her child and how her anger about the child made her do things she wished she could take back. It all starts with Marta and her sister. Marta is pregnant and thinks she can't take care of the kid so she wants an abortion. Then once Choyo Marta’s sister husband found out he insisted to take the kid once he is born. So then Marta decided to take care of the baby until it was born but then after time went by the husband of Choyo said that he wouldn't be able to take the kid because he was already going to have a child with Choyo. Once Marta was told this she let her anger get the best of her which then lead her to

This novel also includes a fictional story of Nya, a little girl that can’t go to school, because she has to walk to the water well twice a day, taking up most of the day. Salva helps Nya get a water well in her village years later by using his organization, Water for South Sudan. Iqbal is the true story of Iqbal Masih, a little boy that became a child slave, but was able to set himself and his friends free from slavery. This book is told in the point of view of Fatima a fictional little girl that was one of the children who was enslaved in the same factory as Iqbal. In each book, the characters grow stronger because of a cultural conflict. Cultural conflicts can force people to become stronger.

In the movie The Bridge on the River Kwai, the leadership techniques and styles of the two key leaders, Colonel Saito and Colonel Nicholson are persistently in conflict. Both men have significantly different personalities and both come from conflicting cultural backgrounds. Yet, these two have one common goal: to build a bridge. Both men have conflicting leadership styles and approaches to achieving this goal. This film is a great exploration in how conflicting leaders can eventually learn how to work together to achieve one common goal. In investigating the themes of leadership style, effectiveness, and power as demonstrated between the two leaders, we can see how these conflicting characters achieve their common goal.

One of those challenges was crossing the Gilo River, as Salva thought, “Swollen by the rains, the Gilo’s current would be merciless. The Gilo River was well known for something else, too. Crocodiles” (75). After finally reaching a refugee camp, the Ethiopian government collapsed, so people came in shooting at all the refugees, forcing them to cross the death-seeking river. Sudan is a desert, therefore meaning that it is excruciatingly dry and unbearably hot, so everyday Salva thought, “...his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst-quenching, life-giving water” (53). Salva was lucky if they could find water, clean water especially; but after Uncle’s death, he would be even more lucky if the group shared it with him. Lion Country was an obstacle too; one that Marial didn’t survive. “Salva, we will soon be out of Lion Country” (41). Uncle had told Salva what is said in the quote above, and it happened- him and Salva had survived Lion Country. Although Salva encountered life-threatening obstacles, he
I want to talk about Landon Cater being a dynamic character and the foreshadowing in the movie called “A Walk to Remember” because Landon Carter, the narrator, began to think about his life changing experiences that helped him and ones surrounding become better people. The movie starts off with Landon reminiscing about when him and his friends were underage drinking and severely injured another student during a prank. The prank was to jump off this high story building into a lake. However, the student Landon and his friends pressured into doing this was severely hurt and was also lead actor in the school play. The consequence of that event lead to Landon having to take the injured student position in the school drama play and that’s where he met Jamie. A dynamic character
This is what the young adult feels when they are coerced to leave their family or the place where they grew up enduring a magnificent kind of suffering, which these authors aim to convey in their books. Due to the dictatorial decisions that Lakshmi’s stepfather greedily makes and the bitter reality of her family’s poverty, Lakshmi was forced to leave her mother, Ama, and her village in the mountain where her childhood was spent, in order to work and earn money. Her departure coupled with what she confronted in the Happiness House, sexual slavery, are persuasive reasons that lead Lakshmi to complete her narration of the story with some meaningful expressions about the sense of suffering. On the other hand, Karana has something that is common but more sad, because all of her people abandoned her. While all the people on the island have decided to depart and the ship was about to sail, Kanara jumped from the ship to pick her brother up. Unfortunately, the ship did not return for the two stranded children, so they start a painful story of struggle on an isolated island that is full of wild and hungry dogs. That action indicates a tragic situation in which a girl suffered from loneliness for almost 18 years. A Long Walk to Water portrays how the fighting of an authoritarian regime against rebels vandalized the country of Sudan causing an essential reason for citizens to leave.
In the book The River Between, written by Ngugi wa Thiong’o, the main characters Chege, Waiyaki, Joshua each played an important role during the time when the new religious started to take over the ridges of Makuyu and Kameno. In the beginning of the book, it depicts Waiyaki at a young age with his two friends, Kamau and Kinuthia. At this point, Waiyaki was shown as a leader or was seen as someone who would become a great leader when he became a man. Waiyaki can be described as brave and shows strong leadership. His father, Chege, kept to himself. Chege once told the tribe about the white men coming over to take over the land. The elders ignored him and ever since then Chege kept to himself. The relationship between the two seems almost like a business relationship. Waiyaki knew his father and knew that he was an important man but sometimes he fear his father. The only time he felt any connection was when they took a journey out of their way to talk about Waiyaki’s next step after his circumcision event of becoming a man. Waiyaki even felt that “Chege had laid his bare soul for a sec...
