An eleven year old boy walking from a raging civil war to find even the tiniest bit of safety from bombs, men with guns and the lack of water. An eleven year old girl walking 8 hours a day for dirty, diseased filled water. These are the stories of Nya and Salva, two children from southern Sudan in the story A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park.
Water can be positive or negative, helpful or unhelpful, or even mean the difference between life and death. For example, Akeer gets sick from drinking the water that Nya carries from the pond everyday. Nya and her family then have to walk to a medical tent to save Akeer from disease. Walking is good for them because it enables them to save Akeer from a potentially deadly disease. On the other hand,

water is a major burden for Nya because she has to walk to at least eight hours a day for dirty, disease filled water for drinking. It takes up most of her day so she can’t do anything else, such as go to school, have fun or make friends. Salva’s walking is negative because he is walking for hours on end, even sometimes without water. He is walking to a refugee camp in Ethiopia, and he has already had to face roaring rivers, thieves and thousands of blood sucking mosquitoes. Salva’s walking has a bit of motivation though, he is walking to safety, and without walking that would not happen. He is also motivated to walk because he wants to find his Family, if they make it to the refugee camp. He is also motivated because his friend Marial died by being attacked by a lion, and he wants to make it to the refugee camp for him. Water is a burden.
Firstly in Chapter three, after walking for four straight hours looking for water, she finally comes upon the lake that her entire family depends on for water. It is described as “There is always so much life around the pond… Many kinds of birds all flap and twitter.” This shows that the water is where there is life and Nya probably thinks that the water as a relief, as she does not have the security of knowing that there will be water in the lake. What is interesting is that the author described the pond as lively and mostly everywhere else as drab and dull. DUring chapter 6, Nya and her family has to move because of the water. The water, and the lack of it, causes nya and her family to move to a pond with water. Nya realized that her mother does not like moving because they have to leave almost everything that is at their house and live in a makeshift shelter. Her mother is also afraid that when her son and husband go hunting they will not come back. Her mother ives the entire day in fear until they come home. On the other hand, Nya likes moving because it means that she doesn't have to walk four hour to water everyday and she doesn't have to face the dangers of walking, such as thorns and the scorching heat. Water gives a sense of security and makes him move to Salva when he is abandoned in a barn. In Page 18 and 19, Salva is traveling with a group of refugees from his village, when they decide to spend the night in a barn. When Salva wakes up though,
everyone had left him. The owner of the barn, an old woman whom he calls “Auntie” feeds him and lets him stay in the barn again. The old woman then has to leave, because her water source, a small pond, is drying up. She says she cannot take Salva with her because it would be more dangerous for her. Salva then continues walking to nowhere with some other refugees. All in all, Nya and Salva endure hardships beyond imagining in the book “ A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. But in spite of that, they still get small moments of ease, where they can relax and enjoy even the tiniest of things.
Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
Jimmy Dean once advised, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination.” The novel A Long Walk to Water authored by Linda Sue Park, is a work of realistic historical fiction and a dual narrative focused on adjusting to change. One storyline is about a young eleven year old girl named Nya who is apart of the Nuer tribe and lives in Sudan. Nya lives the life of a young Sudanese girls because they collect water for their family every day. The other storyline is about an eleven year old boy named Salva who is in the Dinka tribe and lives in Sudan, but travels throughout many countries and states in his life. Linda Sue Park wants readers to know to accept change for good or bad.
In Sandra Benitez’s novel, A Place Where the Sea Remembers, we get to know the lives and struggles of the residents of a small town in Mexico. Each character faces a conflict that affects the course of his or her life. The conflict I chose was the conflict that Marta was with her child and how her anger about the child made her do things she wished she could take back. It all starts with Marta and her sister. Marta is pregnant and thinks she can't take care of the kid so she wants an abortion. Then once Choyo Marta’s sister husband found out he insisted to take the kid once he is born. So then Marta decided to take care of the baby until it was born but then after time went by the husband of Choyo said that he wouldn't be able to take the kid because he was already going to have a child with Choyo. Once Marta was told this she let her anger get the best of her which then lead her to
Summer at Devon is easygoing as teachers mellow out and the rule enforcement dwindles, such carefree behavior represents childhood; Devon’s winter session is ultimately more strict and level, emphasizing the mood in adulthood. As the sun shines bright, tension unravels and everyone at Devon loosens up including the teachers as Gene explains on page 23, “Now on these clear June days in New Hampshire they appeared to uncoil, they seemed to believe that we were with them about half of the time, and only spent the other half trying to makes fools of them.” The summer days are filled with happy-go-lucky antics that seem to come with no serious consequence; exactly how a young child would spend everyday of his life as a youthful boy. There is no
People have goals everyday, believe it or not some people think that dreams aren't worth it. I believe that it is worth it to dream because it gives a person a goal, it makes them feel good, and it makes them stronger. I know this from The Pearl, A Cubs video, the Susan Boyle video, and We Beat the streets.

In his story “On the Rainy River” Tim O’Brien is explaining to us how he had to chose to either go to war or stay at his home. He had to make a big decision about if he really wanted to go to Vietnam War. Some things that stand out about the main character is that he is a very brave person and will give up his body to do what is right. While reading this I can see that the main character is very powerful and very unafraid of certain things. At the same time he also was afraid of certain things because he does not believe in the war. He doesn’t necessarily believe in the war he really just doesn’t support it at all. Even though he really doesn’t support this he still ends up going because it’s in his religious to do things like that. Another
Water is an essential nutrient that our body requires every day. Without water human life cannot be sustained. Water deprivation kills faster than lack of any other nutrient. People do not think of water as a nutrient and don’t realize the important role of water in the body functions.
