Upon reading Chapter 3 of Mimi Markus (2015) text, it is clear that paragraphs are extremely significant in writing. Paragraphs help the writer’s paper illustrate the clarify of words, sentences, and supporting points. Paragraphs that are written appropriately allow any document, manuscript, and or research to group a collection of sentences that identifies and displays a complete thought (Markus, 2015). Nevertheless, paragraphs should be well written and constructed, so that the writer can give the readers a clear and concise understanding of the topic, ideas, main points, and supporting points being discussed. Another revision technique that was suggested was “sentence outlining” which involves summarizing each paragraph of a writing into one overarching sentence in order to improve the cohesion of the piece (Harris 450). Introducing these techniques can allow readers to utilize revision in their own writing and form their own stance on its effectiveness. With revising the conclusion of a piece, Harris’ advise is to look ahead rather than to rephrase what has already been stated (Harris 454). Revision is expected to extend beyond the piece.
The five-paragraph essay is perhaps the only kind of essay many students hear about. Argumentative essays, research papers, and even book reports have a tendency to fall into that formula strictly and allow for little flexibility. This can be a tedious and boring process, as John Warner’s fervent argument insists. However, Kerri Smith demonstrates a stronger argument with her defense of the five-paragraph essay by emphasizing throughout that it is simply a building block for more elaborate essays and by using credible influencers that prove her point effectively.
Frahm holds a similar point of view encouraging clear, straightforward writing not one with a “Confusing introduction. Lack of content. Bad transitions. (and) Excessive grammatical errors.” (Frahm 271).
Level II: Paragraph about the Wall Throughout the novel, Offred and her companion, Ofglen, visit the Wall during their shopping trips. The Wall is where the government displays the criminals who were hanged at the recent Salvation for everyone to see. It is an important element of the setting because it offers insight into other rights the government has stripped away besides women’s rights. For example, the crimes Offred sees displayed are doctors who gave abortions, Jews who did not change their religious stance, and two men who partook in homosexual acts. There are also three women hanged- two handmaids and a wife- for unknown reasons, but it is suspected adultery or murder attempt.
What takes an entire paragraph for some writers to covey is a clipped sentence for Hempel or Beattie. Each word is necessary and saturated with meaning, thus eliminating the need for excess. And no sentence is as important as the first. The initial sentence must incite intrigue and contain insight to the contents of the story. It is the foundation upon which the entire work is built.
We would do research on a subject or a person, and write about them. We, once again, were not allowed to be unique in our writing or think creatively or critically. This is the time when I was taught the five paragraph essay. As stated in Gray’s article, the five paragraph essay is detrimental to students’ writing. This format for writing is damaging because it doesn’t allow students to express their own ideas about a topic. It does not allow for any creativity or uniqueness in a paper. In tenth grade, I wrote many papers for my English class, but I never once got an A on them. I was led to believe that my writing was weak because I could not relate to what I was writing about. I did not have any emotional connection to the research papers I had to write, and it made it harder for me to write them. Literary Analysis Anthem and Station Eleven are both dystopian novels. Both books relate to the citizen having little to no freedom with the government that is controlling them. Anthem was written by Ayn Rand, she wrote about how the government in this area controls what each person is destined to be whether you like it or not. Whereas in Station Eleven the world has practically ended due to a deadly flu virus and, somehow, ended up with a man as many know as the Prophet attempting to rule the word. Both dystopian novels have a very unfair dictatorship type government.

In the short story “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury he warns society about what the future will be like if we only watch tv and don’t exercise or go outside. Mr Leonard Mead was the only person the ever take a walk in his neighborhood when everyone else would be watching tv.
