From a proud Conquistador, to a castaway, a slave and trader, and then medicine man, Cabeza de Vaca was the first European to explore much of the southern coast of Texas. Cabeza was a 37 year old military veteran in 1527 when he left on the Narvaez Expedition to find gold and colonize the Gulf Coast. He was the expedition’s treasurer. Cabeza de Vaca was enslaved by Indians in 1528 when one of the rafts the crew made crashed on present day Galveston island, he then escaped in 1530 and joined/was enslaved by another tribe called the Charrucos until his escape with 3 other survivors in 1534. Cabeza de Vaca, like many other Spaniards, wanted to seek fortune in the new world, but things did not go as planned, and he eventually lost everything. Although he came to conquer in the name of Spain, he ended up living amongst the Native Americans in need for survival and became very close to them. Although originally the Spaniards were very narrow minded and believed the Indians were uncivilized and barbaric, Cabeza de Vaca shortly found out that they were not uncivilized, but quite the opposite. He saw that they were just as human as the Spaniards were and were no less than they were. His perception of humanity altered as a result of living with “the others.”

Arson has been occurring for many years and about 500,000 fires are set intentionally each year. Arson is defined as any willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, the property of another or cause physical harm to another. Fire data has been collected since 1977 by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and the amount of fires has been declining ever since. In the past few decades, there has come about a number of serial arsonists- an offender who sets three or more fires with a cooling-off period between the fires (Douglas, et al, 1992). There are numerous serial arsonists who have been caught, some of which include, Peter Dinsdale, Robert Lee Oyler, Thomas Sweatt, and Paul Keller. While the number of fires across the country have
...hat was done to the forest. The catastrophe took roughly 1,000 people almost three years to clean the area and salvage the timber that was possible. The worst part was the soil though. The ground was consistently covered with a foot or more of ash. This made replanting the area seem to be an impossible and unrealistic goal. Weyerhaeuser did just that though. They dug through the ash and hand planted the entire area. Over 18 million little saplings were all planted, one at a time, by hand. The forest not only began growing back, it flourished due to the seven years of research Weyerhaeuser’s Technology Center put into finding out the most effective way to repopulate the area.
Cabeza De Vaca is a very famous explorer he has been through so much all his life and he still got what he wanted...eventually. He had very exotic tasks such as being a healer to even walking more than 400 miles to Mexico City. Cabeza started all these tasks just for two things. California alone was estimated at “2 billion” in funds during wildland season according to Arun Malik. In the forest service they have been managing fire for over 100 years. Spending tons and tons of money managing the forest every year. Managing the forest is great, it minimizes the outcome. It will not stop the fire entirely, however it will prevent mass destruction of the forest, and prevent communities and peoples property from getting destroyed. Close to 3,500 people caused wildland fires in the past 10 years. Which is understandable, most wild fires are caused by people, and people are not going to change, there is always going to be that one person that throws the match or lighter on the ground and walks away. Like I was saying fires are getting expensive and is a big issue in forestry
...r it is arson, an uncontrolled camp fire, or a cigarette butt it doesn’t take much for humans to spark a disaster. Yet there is as well a few set by good old Mother Nature. On top of the effects on the earth as well as humans, there is only one thing we all can do and that is listen to our old pal Smokey the Bear when he says, “only you can prevent wildfire.”
Why you use controlled fires to protect wild areas? I don't think that's a very good idea. Anything terrible can happen like people getting hurt, trees getting burnt down, and the fire will spread and can get even worse.
