There are many important considerations that teachers should take into account with families and even more so with families whose children are exhibiting challenging Behavior. The three considerations that I think are very important are culture, attachment, and home life. Culture is by far the largest. There are many differences between the European American culture and other cultures such as the Latino culture. Where one culture values Independence the other can value interdependence. Understanding the child's culture could explain certain behaviors. For example in some cultures they ask questions that are more opinion based such as how does the color blue make you feel, versus pointing at something blue and asking what color is it. The child may get very confused why you're asking such a simple question and might not answer it leading to the teacher believing that the child does not know the color. The second is attachment. Colleagues should never sink into a state where they feel that the child is not capable of succeeding and resort to Simply complaining about the child in a venting sense. Colleagues should remain positive and try to see the good in the situations. Any tips such as having a notebook where the teacher tries to write at least five good things about their student is a great suggestion that remains positive. Another thing colleagues should be is open-minded colleagues should never feel that because something didn't work for them that it's never going to work. The family I chose to interview is a blended non-traditional family. There is a mother and her 6 kids. The kids come from two different guys that the gal was married to and a boyfriend that she has lived with in the past. The boyfriend still spends some nights with her.
Working with children, young people and their families can be seen as difficult and complex for many different reasons. However, before these topics can be discussed and explored fully, it is important to completely understand the difference between the words ‘difficult’ and ‘complex’. ‘Difficult’ implies that things are not easily or readily done, where it requires much effort much effort, labour and skill to be performed effectively. In the same way, ‘complex’ implies a hard to deal with situation, but also involves many interconnected parts or complicated arrangements that consist of emotional attachment.
I should learn how to understand and get to know the child. There were two mistakes that I was able to identify thanks to the theory of Therapeutic Alliance. It is not just reading the questions and getting answers to complete the assessment. To begin, I needed to build a trustworthy scenario where children will be able to talk and disclose the information easily. Unfortunately, my settings does not allow me to provide the child a private place where they are able to disclose information that they may feel comfortable to discuss any topic. In the past 50 years, The American family structure has gone though some drastic changes. Family structure includes the combination of individuals that make up a family. There are both structural and cultural factors that have influenced the structure of the American family. Specifically, there has been a decrease in family size over the past 50 years. Structural factors are institutions that influence our lives, including family, education, religion, and policies. Cultural factors are beliefs, norms, and traditions, which guide our decisions.
Family dynamics are the relations between family members as well as the unpredictable interactions that can occur within a family. Every family has its own dynamic. There are so many things to judge when you think of family: there is the order of their birth, siblings that tend to fight, or the single child in a family. It all seems to become apparent through the years. There are four main roles a dysfunctional family. There are Hero, Scapegoat, Lost Child, and Clown/mascot. Realizing that you were a part of a dysfunctional family will certainly aid you in understanding how and why you act the way you do, as well as give you reason to appreciate and view your family differently.
There are many key components to shaping a young child 's life and could be better implemented through professionalism. I like to reflect back to the “Children See Children Do” video, which clearly proves children imitate/learn verbal and nonverbal cues from adults. As a teacher, it is necessary to be the best version of yourself everyday, in order to pass those actions along. This not only affects a child 's ethics but it also generates better behavior which affects the parents lives in a more positive way outside of the classroom. This module has taught me many different techniques when working with a misbehaved child. For instance, I plan to use self awareness in my classroom to keep a positive tone and eliminate poor body language. I will also use breathing methods for children as well as myself to establish a well-rounded classroom. Active listening, this is not just listening with your ears. You need to show appropriate feedback repeating some of what has been said, maybe in the form of a question. Engage with the child you are talking to and answer/respond when required. Children copy behaviour of others so you need to be the best role model you possibly can be. Children need clear boundaries and limits within the school. They need to know that certain behaviour/actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Always need time to communicate with the parents either formal or informal so we can build trust and be cultural sensitive. We can also provide parents with support and education with whatever the child’s needs might be. For the children we help them understand the language and reasoning skills. The show follows three families, Jay Pritchett’s and his two children, from his first marriage, Mitchell and Claire. Jay is married to a much younger woman, Gloria, who has a child from a previous marriage, named Manny. Mitchell lives with his partner Cameron and they have an adopted Vietnamese daughter, Lily. Claire’s family is the most like the traditional family. She is married to her husband Phil Dunphy and together they have three kids, Haley, Alex, and Luke (Modern Family). The show exposes the families’ struggles to get along and survive with such a different way of living. With that said, their family picture demonstrates very well all of the strong personalities and roles of each family member.
It is important for teachers to understand a child’s system of thinking when asking them questions. There are a couple of ideas that might help teachers know if a question being asked is out of a child’s system of thinking. The first would be blank stare or no answer. When asking children questions, if they don’t understand they most likely will give you a weird look or just not answer the question at all. A dysfunctional family is a group of people usually related by some means, not always necessarily by blood, in which conflict, misbehavior, maltreatment and neglecting create a hostile life for its members. To explain this idea better we will see the definition of family, the differences between a healthy and a dysfunctional family; their characteristics and behavioral patterns. Some examples will help us examine this issue better, taking us to discuss the different factors that contribute to the formation of such families, along with its consequences in today’s society.
Sometimes a student is successful in one area and having difficulty in another or a student has trouble using their words to communicate and becomes aggressive. At this center, the teachers have the tools to assess each child and the parents are interested in knowing the strengths and supports their child needs. The article Understanding Families, states that there should be “opportunities for families to discuss their beliefs about their children, what they want for their children, and how they support their children’s development” (Christian, 7). As conferences occur every 6 months, parents also communicate with the school and teachers via email and during drop off and pick up times. Another great example of parent communication is in the article Building Bridges from School to Home. The teacher builds relationships with parents by getting them to understand the areas that their child struggles and continues to strive in. Making sure they know that their child will master these skills when they are ready (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 2). Many times, teachers will make the mistake of pre-judging families from different cultures and misunderstand their communication styles and value systems. In order to prevent such misunderstandings, teachers should not be afraid to step outside of their own culture bubble in an effort to comprehend differences between their own culture and these parents. A healthy family is a family which follows a set of strong morals, stays loyal to one another, cooperates, and works together to avoid conflict. An environment where there is openness amongst family members is ideal because minds that are open are more susceptible to avoiding conflict than minds that are closed. If conflict gets the best of a family, it has the potential to increase hostility and create remoteness between family members, however, if a family resolves conflict, it can strengthen and enforce the family relationships.
