Writing is one of the most effective tools we have for learning and expressing what we know. It stands to reason that writing gives us an opportunity to communicate and connect with others. It is a useful and, moreover, effective way of promoting self-reflection and personal development. However, difficulties with writing lead to significant barriers in education and other life pursuits. In fact, I am very familiar with the challenges of writing as a student. But one of my biggest problem in writing is lack of concentration. Without sufficient attention to writing, I am not able to put my opinions on paper. Unfortunately, my heart makes it difficult to write even if my brain says ‘‘Come up Nazan! You should write.’’ Most importantly, I become easily anxious and unable to think if there is too much noise the place where I am studying. There is always something to distract me such as social media, friends, phone, television, video games and outing. Sometimes, my father is speaking very loudly on the phone, or my sister is making a lot of noise while singing a song, and those are the sufficient reasons to stop giving my attention to writing. Ultimately, lack of focus is killing my productivity. Therefore, lack of focus is one of the biggest challenges I have to tackle during my writing. However, I try improving my concentration with habits that help me focus on my writing and avoid distractions. I mostly read personal development books and blogs. Plus, I try working on improving my self-confidence in order that I could cope with my problems. I surround myself with friends who can encourage me to write. Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
My English Literature major has helped me to achieve an outstanding level of appreciation, enjoyment, and knowledge of both American and British Literature. As a high school AP English student, I struggled through great works like Hamlet and To the Lighthouse. My teacher’s daily lectures (there was no such thing as class discussion) taught me merely to interpret the works as critics had in the past. I did not enjoy the reading or writing process. As a freshman at Loras, I was enrolled in the Critical Writing: Poetry class. For the first time since grade school, my writing ability was praised and the sharing of my ideas was encouraged by an enthusiastic and nurturing professor. Despite the difficulty of poetry, I enjoyed reading it. Because of my wonderful experience in Critical Writing, my love for reading and writing was renewed and my confidence in my abilities as a writer had been restored. I decided to take a second chance on English by declaring Literature and Writing as my majors.
The first step to being successful, no matter what you’re trying to succeed, is to recognize your weak points, your strengths, and your limits. I myself know that I have several, and when I say several, I mean several, weak points when it comes to writing papers. The first and most lethal to a student who wishes to be well, is procrastination. I will always put writing a paper off till the last minute. In fact, I’m doing it right now as I’m writing this. I’m already doing what I say I’m not supposed to be doing. You can probably tell that I’m off to a great start. The next on the list of things that will brutally murder a student who wishes to do well in a class are distractions. Of course there is a multitude of things that can distract you at any time, especially shiny objects, though I have found that I am most venerable to distractions that take the form of sounds when I am trying to write a paper. To counter this, I do something that kind-of contradicts itself, though that is the most important part of discovering your weaknesses. You have to do something about them, and get over them. That is what this paper is all about; getting over my problems and issues with writing so that I can become a better writer (and by reading this you might learn a thing or two yourself).

During this term I felt that I have progressed a lot as a writer. I wrote three different types of stories that I have never written before including an argument paper, a literacy narrative and an analysis essay. I enjoyed the creative freedom given to me allowing me to choose topics that I enjoy writing about but, also being given clear goals to accomplish in the assignments that were assigned.

When I sit down to write, I must do so in a clean, well-organized, and well-lit area. The space must be free from distractions, such as the television or radio, so that I am able to focus and gather my thoughts. I like to begin my writings similar to the way William Stafford says he starts, "To get started I will accept anything that occurs to me." Writing down any thought that will help support and provoke more thoughts and ideas. When my thoughts become cloudy, I like to rise from my seat and walk around speaking out ideas to myself. I find this practice helps to jumpstart my brain activity and clear my foggy mind.
Writing is vital to my life. It is the most efficient form of thinking. It doesn't come after thought. It's not an expression of what I've already thought. It is thought. I like to think I can write most things well although I will make mistakes if I rush my writing. and my rewrites are always much better than the first draft. I am practically incapable of working things out unless I do it "on paper." This may be because I have a crippled temporary memory. I can't hold multiple images in my mind at once. At work, we have whiteboards all over the office, and I use them more than anyone else. To work on a project, I need to make lists and charts, and I'll refer to them throughout the project. At the end of sophomore year I was stuck between honors English and AP. I knew that I would be able to keep an A all year in honors but I wanted a little bit more of a challenge, so I chose AP. I heard from many people while signing up for classes that junior year was going to knock us on our butts. I never for a second thought that junior year and the classes would be any different than the rest. At the end of yet another year, I have realize that junior year was a constant struggle of turning assignments in on time and creating time for other things, but it was a year that has helped mature me for college.
I am a female 16 year old college student enrolled at the University of North Georgia who is conducting this self-study to improve as a writer through self-awareness. The goal of this study is to record and analyze my writing process as it is in my natural writing environment, and help me become a better writer through analyzing my writing habits. This will help me prevent future bad habits and distractions and focus on good habits. This study will record my writing process as I talk aloud so that I can analyze how I write and consider this in the future. When growing up, it seemed the one subject that I dreaded the most was English. I hated to read because books assigned for book reports always seemed boring to me, therefore giving me no real motivation to understand the content and write a good report, thus making writing more of chore than a learning experience. Of course, when considering my return to school, the thought of having to research and write countless essays became a big fear of mine. However, after much deliberation, I realized that I possessed one crucial tool that I did not have all those years ago in high school: motivation. So, the question is, “Why do I want to improve my writing skills?”.
The topic of this study was Difficulties in Academic Writing: From the perspective of king Saud University post graduate students. The result of this study is that it is difficult for students to write on their own. Students are unable to make an outline before writing drafts and it is also difficult for them to distinguish between written and spoken English. Throughout my life, reading and writing was not always my strongest point. In fact, it was one of my weaker subjects and I loathed being forced to read and write when it comes to school. I remember even up to the end of my senior year, I rarely touched any of my textbooks or barely read any of my assigned books throughout high school. However, as I began college, I started to force myself to fully read all my textbooks and complete my writing assignments with my fullest capabilities. In the past couple of weeks, I found ways to balance out my reading and writing to fit in with my leisure time and for school assignments.
Effective writing can be an essential task in many career fields. It is another way of communication that can be viewed by numerous people at any given time. Learning to be able to do this effectively can be challenging, but yet very rewarding in the end. During this course I have been able to refine some of my skills in writing and learned various methods to improve this process. Let’s discuss why I write, my beliefs about writing, and how that has changed over the past semester.
