Who is an Immigrant?
An Immigrant is someone who chooses to leave his country of origin or country of birth to another country, and in this case immigrates to Canada. Likewise, it’s important to note that in Canada that they are two ways in which one can migrate to Canada. According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (2016), one can migrate through the family class immigrants (being sponsored by a family members or relatives who are permanent residents and Canadian citizen), and through economic class immigrants (provincial/territorial nominees, skilled workers, and business immigrants with financial independence). Spouses and children may accompany immigrant from the economic class (Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), 2016).

Cultural shock may negatively affect an individual especially when they feel that stress of adjusting, distress over losing their culture and identity, begin to feel homesick, maybe loss of support, and so on. Likewise, when an individual is distress over the loss of self-worth, support, comfort, self-acceptance, identity, fulfillment and meaning, that can result in their life been affected. More so, cultural shock could come in different form, for instance an individual coming from a collectivist culture when the husband is the head of the family and he provides all that is needed for the up keep of the family and then moving to a country and then the role changes and it’s the woman providing for the home, that cloud be depressing when thinking about it. As a result, in working with this client I require to understand my own internalized culture(s) and how my personal worldviews have been shaped, to understand “who I am I as cultural beings” (Arthur & Collins, 2015, p. 286). The Family class makes up approximately 28% of people immigrating to Canada. This is a class of people who are wanting to immigrant to Canada in order to be with a relative or spouse who is a Canadian citizen or recent immigrant (also known as a Sponsor). There is no point system required to be accepted as an immigrant, but they must prove that their Sponsor is able to meet the minimum necessary income for them until the applicant can find an employment. Accepting these types of immigrants not only allows Canada to stay on good terms with its immigrants but, also keeps the money that the original immigrant would have been making, and sending back to their family in their home country, to stay and be spent in Canada. The Canadian government has many laws and policies for immigrants and immigration. For example, in 2002 the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act was instituted. It has four main objectives: to pursue social, cultural and economical benefits for all Canadians, to reunite families in Canada, to promote successful integration of immigrants and to respect the bilingual and multicultural character of Canada. Another example of a policy impacted by immigration was the Sign Decision in 1985. This was the ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada that the Immigration Act (1976) was a violation of our Section 7 rights in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. On April 10th of 1978, the Immigration Act was passed by Pierre Trudeau of the Liberal Government of Canada. This piece of legislation had three main objectives. It promoted the reunification of families that had been separated by immigration, accepted persecuted people for humanitarian value to the nation, and strengthened a currently strong and viable economy in Canada. The Immigration Act of 1978 outlined three distinguishable classes of immigrants: Independent, Family, and Refugee. In order to be accepted, the Independent Class had to satisfy a new Point System, which enabled immigrants to score marks from each category: Education, Skill, Language, and Resources. The Family Class was mainly for immigrants with close relatives who were already living in Canada as a citizen or as a permanent resident. This unprecedented act primarily allowed a humanitarian category for refugees. The Immigration Act of 1978 impacted Canada as it permitted the nations to strengthen its economy and population, provided ethnic composition of population, and fulfilled Canada’s obligation to refugees.
Canada was determined to create a strong nation state during the first few decades of the twentieth century. Immigrants from various countries moved to Canada in hopes of prospering in a country that promised them so much. But not every immigrant was treated fairly. This is why intersectionality is necessary to consider because of existing complexities that exist within different groups of people. It is essential to examine the intersections of class, race/ethnicity, and gender, in order to understand why particular migrant groups experienced certain social and economic inequalities in the first three decades of the twentieth century.

The integration of immigrants in Canada (or any country for that matter) involves integration into three different domains: the social sphere, the economic sphere, and the institutional sphere. (12) Integration into the social sphere refers to immigrants’ ability to create relationships and have social interactions with other Canadians. We don’t realize how hard it is for immigrant parents to get their children education, and we judge and hate on something we have never been through. I guess it’s true you never know someone’s pain unless you go through it. Not everyone has the same privileges as others, some have to work twice as hard to try to give their children an opportunity towards an education on the contrary some American families have it simpler. I not blaming people who have families who were born here or say it’s wrong, but many people tend to affront children of immigrant parents and feel like they have the equitableness to say they aren’t suitable to receive public education.

Immigration is the movement from one location to another to live there permanently. This topic has been usually been associated with sociology to better explain how it affects people, cultures and societies. At a young age, my teachers and parents taught me to believe that I could do and accomplish anything that I set my mind to. I grew up thinking that I was unstoppable and that the only limit to my achievements was the sky. Immigration has always been a large conflict people have faced all across the world. There are plenty of reasons why people migrate to a country, whether it may be the United States or any other particular one. Many people often come in an attempt to escape poverty, crime, or to simply have a better opportunity to better their lifestyle. Although there are people who migrate and commit severe crimes, there are others who sacrifice themselves in order to live a better life. In addition to that, I believe the government should approve new immigration laws in favor of immigrants who come to better their life and achieve their dreams.
When I think of America, I think about white people, and the different foods, as in hotdogs, hamburgers, steak , salads and drinks like alcohol, 7 up and sprite. And of course the most popular sport football. An American Identity is created by Immigrants, Diversity and Tragedies. A way American Identity is created is the arrival of the Immigrants entering the United States for a better life.
