Reflection #2 When I was in 3rd grade, we had a lesson about China. We all went to the multipurpose room and sat on the floor with pillows. We learned how to use chopsticks and practiced picking up food. I was very engaged because I made the connection that if I learned how to use chopsticks, then I could pick up sushi and eat it like my mom. Then after we practiced, we were shown a slideshow of pictures that a teacher took when he went to China. He explained all the pictures and I was just in awe because their landscape is nothing that I have seen before. Next, we got to put together our own miniature Chinese garden in a shoe box. I was excited for this activity as well because the
pictures of the gardens were so beautiful. I also wanted to be an interior designer at the time so I took this as an opportunity to create my garden, like I was putting together a room. Action #1 The strategy bank no longer exists on the West Virginia Department of Education website or I really can’t find it. But whenever I start a lesson, first I will ask students what we learned last week. Next, I will tell the students how we are building new knowledge on last week’s concepts. Then, I will clarify the key words of the lesson. For ELLs I will have a graphic organizer for them to fill out when they are learning the new word. It may look similar to this: Then I will ask students piqued questions such as, “how does this concept relate to you?” (personal connection), and “how might these concepts relate to previous knowledge?” (academic connection). Then I will build their background knowledge on the subject through out of class or in-class field trips, visuals, and/or visitors (if applicable). Finally, at the end of the lesson, I will give my students the choice of writing in their journal about how the lesson related to them and why. Then, students can go back into their journal to help remind them of the lesson.
I remember when I was in grade six the native chief of the reserve back home in Parry Sound came to our public school and did a big speech on the native medicine wheel. He showed us pictures and diagrams of it and taught us about all the different beliefs and meanings of the colours. They still teach this stuff to children in public school today which is really great considering how long it has actually been around.
English 102 taught me a variety of important lessons. In one aspect, I learned how to work better with others. Similarly, the literary research paper deepened my understanding of other cultures. Lastly, my writing abilities have improved. The assignments and projects were an effective means of providing learning and growth.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
After the fall of the Han Dynasty in 220 C.E., China faced a time period of political disunity, when various economic and social factors began to break down the Chinese complex bureaucracy. During this time, Buddhism, which has already reached China in the first century C.E, suddenly became popular among the Chinese people as a refuge for political and social problems after each dynastic cycle. However, after 570 C.E., when the imperial structure and social order were restored, there were mixed responses to the spread of Buddhism in China, which contain neutral, positive and negative undertones.
One of my personal favorite days of this semester was the class trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It was a long journey to get there, especially with having to walk all the way from Penn Station, but it was a nice day so I couldn’t really complain. Plus, it was worth it because I love museums. The Met is absolutely beautiful, inside and out. I could not believe how big it was and how many galleries there actually were. I can’t wait to go back and see all of them! Our trip mostly focused upon Greek and Roman art, and I found it to be thoroughly interesting. There was so much to look at that I didn’t know where to start. I was in amazement at all of the pieces and the fascinating stories behind them. The two pieces that sparked my interest the most were the marble sarcophagus depicting the myth of Selene and Endymion and the Etruscan bronze chariot.
My favorite aspect of this project was learning all of the different aspects of making the sand paintings. Especially, the ceremonial ones because they are the ones that need to be perfect in accordance with Navajo tradition and belief to work.
The most fascinating aspect of this experience, for me, was the exposure to new cultures. This includes the twist culture puts on science. I found huge difference in the viewpoints of many cultures towards science related issues surprising. For instance many cultures had vastly different ways of looking at the forthcoming issues surrounding the implications of genetic engineering. The Asian and American cultures were very different in many work habit areas as well. There was an interesting group dynamic as culturally mixed groups strove to collectively complete group projects. The cultural sharing in science went beyond how questions were answered to how they were asked to which questions were most important and even which questions were addressed. while observing the cultural spin on science and work habits was an interesting pastime, the true wonder was cultural sharing on a greater scale.
Over the course of this semester I have learned a lot from my English 1302 class. Through the instruction of Professor Keck as well as the Pearson textbook and the writing handbook I have been instilled with devices that I can carry with me for as long as I am writing. I have not only learned how to better my writing but also how to write arguments that are not only strong but effective.
In the book, The China Study, eight principals of food and health are based upon years of study. The eight principles are valuable for all people regardless of race or location. People are people and everywhere people need to eat. The principles found to work in China will work across the board regardless of location on the globe. According to the eight principals, good, whole-foods, plant-based diets will provide the nutrients required to maintain health no matter where one is. However, one’s biochemical individuality must be considered when recommending the principals to a client because of the individual dietary requirements. Some people must have additional protein or other nutrients that may not be available in a plant-based diet to meet his or her requirements. For most people, however, a plant-based diet as shown in The China Study can provide most of the nutrients required for health because nutrients that are available in whole-foods are biochemically correct for health maintenance. These authentic learning activities are more engaging for the students and allow for a wide range of learning styles. It is imperative that all teachers attempt to integrate these experiences into their classroom as often as possible. These activities usually take more time and energy to plan and implement, but the benefit to the students make the extra work worthwhile.

Their inventions were really innovative and useful, despite that, people use these products even nowadays. What is probably the most interesting: a lot of products were unknown in Western world (Europe) for a long time.
When I reflect back to the beginning of this semester I am astonished at how much I have learned. English 124 has been a real eye opener for me. Not only have I grown as a writer, but it has challenged me to become more of a critical thinker. In the class we have read many articles on diverse topics, studied theories of history’s greatest philosophers of education, and wrote various styles of papers.
For my assignment I have decided to choose a group which I have just finished taking for level 1 Hairdressing and they have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. This is within my current role as a hairdressing lecturer at Hugh Baird College which I have done since October. Within this group there are a couple of people who have support workers. There is one student within the group who has severe learning difficulties and is a more mature student. She also has many health problems which results in her having to carry an oxygen tank around for when she has any problems with her breathing due to her having problems with her heart. There is also another student in the class who has learning difficulties, she is very clever but just needs someone there for when she needs something explaining. She also has a support worker that comes in to give her support. This student has also been going through personal problems at home and has attendance issues. There is another student within this group who has severe dyslexia. She doesn’t have a support worker but the support people who are in there do give her help as she can have a tendency to give up, not to listen and just needs to be kept on track so by sitting next to a person that does have a support worker she gets the help from them. These three students have all had their level 1 qualification extended for a year were the rest of the group have progressed on to level 2 Hairdressing. Two of these students may progress on to level 2 but one doesn’t have the ability to be able to do this as the requirements are too high for her. In high school, English was my strongest and favorite subject. I never had to work as hard in English as I did in math or any other subjects I took in high school. My peers would cram all night for a Literature test we were going to have but not I. I excelled in writing essays about Moby Dick and his white Whale or Beowulf and Grendel. My confidence in my ability to write was always high and when I enrolled at Chattahoochee, I assumed my confidence would not waiver. When I received my grade for my first paper, I was in shock of all the red ink that covered it. English 1101 taught me the skills I needed to have to be able to write a great paper and prepared me for what was to come for English 1102. English 1102 have taught me to rethink my abilities as a writer and to work harder and spend more time on my essays and think outside the box.
