A Man Disguised in Uniform The sun has risen, the weather is perfect, and Cesar Sosa finds himself already standing on the sideline of that soccer field. A typical weekend for this soccer coach has just begun. After 18 years of teaching soccer to many players of all ages and any gender, Cesar Sosa is one of the most well-known coaches in the city of El Paso, Texas. “He is more than just a coach he is also my friend who will always be there for me and my teammates,” said Jorge Hernandez, current player for one of Cesar´s teams. Sounds like a great coach with a fantastic passion for soccer, but coaching is not the way that this passion arose. A young Cesar Sosa would run around the streets with the dream of one day playing professional soccer. …show more content…
Coming from Paraguay in South America made the road towards becoming a professional soccer player harder, but not impossible. It was at age 15 when the dream started to become true.
Cesar Sosa had been chosen to become part of the youth academy for Cerro Porteño, a professional soccer team in Asuncion, Paraguay. Going to practice was a daily struggle because of the fact that the Sosa family did not have a car. That did not matter to Cesar. “I would wake up one or two hours before practice to wait for the bus in order to get to practice,” Cesar Sosa expressed. One year later Cesar Sosa began to be recognized in practice. The coaches started to notice his qualities and talents. The opportunity to play with the first team came when Cesar was around 17 years old. One player had been injured, one player was sick, and one player had been suspended. It was at this time when Cesar was called up to play with the first time. After having played this game Cesar stayed with the first team, but unfortunately had to settle to being on the bench. Upon the arrival of a new coach things seem to go downhill when Cesar was un-liked by the new coach and he decided to leave. “Whoever told you soccer was an easy sport is a liar,” is what Cesar believed to be the truth. Even though things were not easy Cesar continued to fight for his …show more content…
dream. It was not until Cesar joined General Caballero, a professional soccer team in Paraguay that he finally lived up his dream to be a professional soccer player. Since day 1 after arriving to General Caballero Cesar proved to be a top choice into the starting 11 for each game. At age 24 Cesar continued his dream in Mexico.
While in Mexico Cesar played for Cobras, Cruz Azul, Celaya, Correcaminos, and Irapuato. It was here in Mexico where he was nicknamed Cesar “Superman” Sosa. If you happen to be walking around El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and you mention his name, many people will know exactly who he is. As Cesar´s soccer career came to an end he was sure of one thing. He did not want to know about soccer for the rest of his life. Little did he know that in a couple of years he would form his own soccer academy and become head coach. “It´s a passion, it´s like something someone has within,” Cesar said upon being asked for the reasons he became a head coach. At the age of 33 was when Cesar began to be a head coach. Yet, it was not until 4 years later that the journey to form his academy began. In the year of 2001, Cesar began with just a usual team and after a year of success the academy had finally began in 2002. “I have been a member of his academy ever since 2004 and I can honestly say that being a member of his State and Regional champion team is an honor,” stated Mario Ramirez when being asked about Cesar´s
success. As of 2015 Cesar can be considered one of the best coaches in El Paso, Texas with the amount of success he has had throughout the years in his academy. Not only can he be thought of as a great coach, but he is also a great friend and human being. “He is like a father figure to me when I most need advice,” said Willy, current player for one of Cesar’s team when being asked of his opinion on Cesar.

Cesar Chavez, a civil rights activist, was a major proponent of workers’ rights in Hispanic history. Cesar was born in 1927, in Yuma, Arizona, as a Mexican- American. He grew up in a large family of ranchers and grocery store owners. His family lived in a small adobe house, which was taken away during the Great Depression. In order to receive ownership of the house, his father had to clear eighty acres. Unfortunately, after his father cleared the land, the agreement was broken, and the family was unable to purchase the house. Since Cesar’s family was homeless, they had to become migrant farmers. In order to find work, they relocated to California.
Cesar admired heroes like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr for their nonviolent methods. He followed Gandhi and Dr. King’s practice of nonviolence for the protest against grapes. Some young male strikers started talking about acts of violence. They wanted to fight back at the owners who have treated them poorly. They wanted to fight back to show that they were tough and manly. Some of the strikers viewed nonviolence as very inactive and even cowardly. However, Cesar did not believe in violence at all. He believed nonviolence showed more manliness than violence and that it supports you if you’re doing it for the right reason. He thought nonviolence made you to be creative and that it lets you keep the offensive, which is important in any contest. Following his role model Ghandi, “Chavez would go on hunger strikes” (Cesar Chavez 2). This showed that he would starve for his cause and that he was very motivated. It also showed that he was a very peaceful and nonviolent protester. Chavez was fasting to rededicate the movement to nonviolence. He fasted for 25 days, drinking only water and eating no food. This act was an act of penitence for those who wanted violence and also a way of taking responsibility as leader of his movement. This fast split up the UFW staff. Some of the people could not understand why Cesar was doing the fast. Others worried for his health and safety. However the farmworkers

In the beginning, Cesar Chavez started having a hard life ever since he was young. He was born on March 31, 1927 in San Luis Arizona, near Yuma. He had two brothers and two sisters. He started working at a young age after his family lost their ranch on an economic crisis. As a consequence, they moved and started living in a barrio, which was a poor area of town in San Jose, California and they started living as immigrants. Later, he left school in order to start working with his family in fields and, in a way, start supporting his family. They used to move from farm to farm in look for more fields to harvest, so they could get more money. When he was seventeen he enlisted into the United States Navy and served for two years. At his return, in 1948, he married the love of his life, Helen Fabela, and eventually years later they had eight children together.
While the two men were traveling Montejo stayed in Tabasco preparing the conquest of the interior. He unfortunately failed and left his son as head of the government of Campeche and immediately returned to New Spain for reinforcements.
In order to be successful, failure is inevitable. When one fails, it is essential for them to practice tremendous hours to develop their skills and master their craft. In beginning of the book, Gladwell explains “The emerging picture from such studies is that ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert in anything” (40). I believe his experiences from a young age, provoked him to take a stand for justice, equality and dignity for not only migrant farm workers but for all. Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.
