Introduction Cesar Chavez was one of the most influential social figures in the 20th century due to what he did during his time. He not only would influence others, but would also use actions to get the support of his movement. He would uses actions like nonviolence to show that violence was not the answer and not the key way to accomplish the goals that he and the union had. He would also have to sacrifice his own health and fast for 25 days to show his union a lesson. And in the movie, it states how Cesar Chavez was an iconic “symbol to the movement” due to his injury when walking to the capital (Viva La Causa). He had some traits like vison, concern, and courage that most leaders have. This is all stated in the Campbell article (2002) …show more content…
showing how these traits were part of his success to what he wanted for his union. What important findings were made during this research? Which of the leader's personal characteristics seem to be most important for his success as a catalyst for change? What did the author of this paper learn about herself as the research, reading and writing for this assignment progressed? What conclusions can be drawn from this research? Findings of our leader: Cesar Chavez was a powerful social figure in his time. He was a man that had to lead an union with no experience. Cesar Chavez lead his union even though he had no experience with politics and also had very little education. In the movie we are introduced that he had to drop out of school. But then later on it shows us his success with the union. This demonstrates to us that he is a powerful social figure because he was just a man that came from another place and he's decided to stand up not just for him, but for all of the people that were working in the fields. He also leads a union making him a powerful social figure due to he was able to get the support and help from people that didn't know who Cesar Chavez was. Another way that shows us how much of a social figure Cesar Chavez was that his ideas/views was the voice for those that wanted justice and human rights. He would lead strikes, and speak out for those who wanted rights. This is demonstrated when he would stand up for the workers, the way people would respect him, and also got the whole country to realized the conflict that was occurring in Delano, California. Another example that shows that he was a powerful figure is how his ways were influential to the union. An example is how he would practice the ways of nonviolence and also fasted for 25 days. This shows how he had to sacrifice his own health and this made his union realize what kind of message Cesar Chavez wanted to show them. ¨Thus, by the end of 1966, Chavez and the farm workers were part of a broad based, nationally known movement¨ This determines what kind of figure Cesar Chavez was due to he started with a union that was less than 50- 100 people. Now we see in this quote how he took it to the next level because he caught the whole attention of the nation. His social figure was crucial to this union due to how his ways, actions, or methods would gain the attention of his union and they will obey him. Another quote that shows how he was a powerful social figure is when it quotes on pg 100 that “ Chavez understood unity was more powerful than ethnic separation.” This shows to us how Cesar Chavez was able to not get his ethic involved but others like the people from the Phillipines to unite with them. Another thing that we can see how Cesar Chavez was a powerful social figure was how he had the ability to command for something( the march to Sacramento) and his union went to go do it. Even though Cesar Chavez and his union know what distance they had to travel, he still managed to get them to march. Not only did he march to the capital, but as he marches towards there, he gain more people to get involved with the union and caught the attention of the media. Characteristic traits: The author shows us the struggles and working conditions of the farmworkers and showed us how they all got their rights because of a person, Cesar Chavez. Cesar Chavez was seen as a hero and a leader to many communities throughout the world. He lead many people into his beliefs and lead him to trusting and loving him so much. He not only did he achieve the rights for the farmworkers but inspired many to speak up and fight for their rights. Chavez demonstrated the readers that he used his vision, creativity, and courage to get what he wanted for the farmworkers. The author showed us that fighting for your rights without violence can lead to a win, just like Chavez did. Many people in the U.S viewed Chavez as a threat to farm businesses. Cesar Chavez inspired many to fight for rights. He got the farm workers rights by encouraging others to help out and letting the people see his vision. Chavez knew how being poor and struggling for money was the worst feeling ever because he had gone through that with his family before. He saw how farm workers struggled to get food for their families with such a low paid wage. Cesar had inspired an “organization that did not look like a labor union.” ( 3, del castillo) This is significant because it shows how Chavez wanted to help the farmworkers out and gave them hope.He gave them hope because even though it wasn't a labor union he still chose to help the organization because he knew that they can win something and be heard by many. By having Cesar Chavez be a leader and a motivator made the union look like and organization due to the fact of the way he was showing confidence of what he was doing. He inspired them because he was “the first person to speak up for all the farmworkers and even if his past unions weren't successful, he still didn't give up because he wanted to strive for others.”( Del Castillo) This clearly shows that he used vision to help the farm workers because he wanted a reform that was successful that can be learned from the past unions. It also shows that he cared about the farmworkers because he wanted perception for them. He wanted them to be heard by everyone and wanted everything to be done in a nonviolent way. By making all the boycotts nonviolent showed that his vision was to do things in a peaceful manner. Not only that but he also vision how his ways of nonviolence would later be in effect after he had to fast in order to set the example. He also had a vision that he wuill be the leader that would bring justice to the workers since he had to go through in also but in another state. This is shown when it qoutes in the article “If you want to remember me, organize!” Cesar used courage to get people to be on his side and to win a battle for a great cause.
Cesar "wanted to get away from the interruptions that constantly arose from having the union headquarters located near an urban center and a major highway" due to him feeling too dependent and moving to the place would make it a local decision." (Del Castillo). This shows courage because he didn't want people to be dependending on him do all the work, he moved to a place were people so the people can be more involved in the situation and have them fight for the rights of the farmworkers as well. This is also demonstrating how they'd encouraged to make decisions as well and not depend so much on Cesar because it was a team that was working for the same cause. Another way he demonstrates courage to us in in the article when it says how Cesar Chavez had to drop out of school when he was in middle school to help out his father in the fields. Not only that but the article also mentions that Cesar Chavez fasted in 1968 to show his followers and this organization that nonviolence is the way to fight for their cause. This also tells us how Cesar Chavez had to risk his health and his life just to set an example to his union that violence isn't the answer to win the …show more content…
cause. Learning of Myself as a reader and Writer: At first when we were introduced about the Cesar Chavez paper, I thought that this was gonna be difficult and hard to accomplish doing this essay. Not only that but, seeing the examples of the essay when we were about to begin, I thought it was gonna be long due to how much pages the overall essay was gonna be. Once we started to do the essay, It was pretty hard to collect the information that we were gonna use for this essay. Now that we are about to accomplish in finishing the essay, I realized about myself as a reader and writer, that the essay was difficult at all. The only thing that I would struggle on this was that i would make a claim, but have a little trouble on trying to give my own analysis and commentary on it. Another thing was the citations and i would get confused on how to cite my evidence. But as we got closer to finishing the essay, I saw in myself that I had grown in my way of writing and that the feedback I would receive would make me a better writer and would also help my essay be more strong. Conclusion: Cesar Chavez is considered one of the most important figures in the 20th century due to what he did.
Overall, there were many factors to which who influenced Cesar Chavez the most. Some key factors were people like Mahatma Gandhi. In the UFW article it states that “ the idea of that nonviolence could be an active force for change.” (Tejada-flores) Another factor was the union and the people involved with it. They would always support his ideas and actions even though if they agree with it. Another factor would be his father due to how it states in the UFW article that “ his father taught him the value of hard work and opened his eyes to the inequities of the farm labor system.”(Tejada-Flores) Another person that influenced Cesar Chavez also was a man called Fred Ross. He is mention in the article that he taught Cesar Chavez “how to organize to deal with problems like police violence and
discrimination.”(Tejada-Flores)
The movie Bernie is true story of a murder committed in Carthage, Texas in 1996. What set this crime apart from other murders was the reaction of the citizens. Bernie Tiede shot and killed Marjorie Nugent in November 1996. The people of Carthage were more worried about Bernie’s fate than his act of murdering Marjorie.

Both of the speeches, Martin Luther King's and Cesar Chavez', are powerful peices and communicate one vision: equality. King and Chavez have two very different styles of writing but the message from both is simmilar. for example both king and chavez discuss how their people are discriminated against because of their skin color, and how their people have neither the right to vote in the the south, nor the will to vote in the north , and in Chavez' situation, to have their vote counted. however similar their message's may be, their writing styles are different. Chavez talks about statistics, about why and how his people are treated. king held that the atrocitys commited against his people were self evident and as such did not need to be proved to anyone. kings message was meant to encompass the entire Uninted States while Chavez' was directed primarily at California.
Cesar chavez (1927-1993) was a civil rights leader. He is most famous for creating the National Farm Workers Association. Chavez grew up in Arizona on his family’s farm. When the depression hit, Chavez was 11 years old, and his family lost their farm and were forced to become migrant workers. The working conditions on the farms Chavez and his family worked on were horrible. This later inspired him to make a union for farm workers, the National Farm Workers Association. He is known for being an activist of civil rights for Latinos, rights for farm workers, and also for animal rights.
Like many activist Cesar Chavez set many campaigns to get some type of social change, this was easy for him
Through the years, individuals have shown that a single man can make a difference. Men who, when committed to a cause, will rise up with honor, integrity, and courage. Cesar Chavez was such a man. He represented the people and rose above his self concerns to meet the needs of the people. Cesar Chavez showed us that, “The highest form of freedom carries with it the greatest measure of discipline.” He lived by this standard and fought freedom with the highest form of dignity and character.
Senator Robert F. Kennedy described him as “one of the heroic figures of our time” (Cesar Chavez Foundation). This shows that Cesar Chavez made a difference in people’s lives, including Senator Robert’s. Some people may say that immigrants are bad people but Cesar Chavez was an immigrant himself yet, also a hero to the country. Experts say he was an American farm worker, labor leader, and a civil rights activist. This shows that he fought for what he believed in. Being a farm worker wasn’t something he planned on doing but he had no choice because he was an immigrant. He saw how cruel Americans were treating immigrants so he fought for their rights. He spoke for all the immigrants everywhere. The Cesar Chavez Foundation mentioned that at age 11, his family lost their farm during the great depression and became migrant farm workers. This shows how and why Cesar Chavez fought for farmworkers rights. He grew up not having the best childhood but he took others lives into consideration and fought for them to have a better and brighter
One of the greatest civil rights activists of our time; one who believed the ways of Gandhi and Martin Luther King that “violence can only hurt us and our cause” (Cesar Chavez); a quiet, devoted, small catholic man who had nothing just like those he help fight for; “one of America's most influential labor leaders of the late twentieth century” (Griswold del Castillo); and one “who became the most important Mexican-American leader in the history of the United States” (Ender). Cesar Chavez; an American farm worker, who would soon become the labor leader that led to numerous improvements for union workers; it is recorded that Chavez was born near Yuma, Arizona on March 31, 1927 and died on April 23, 1993 in San Luis, Arizona. (Wikipedia) His life affected many others as his unselfish deeds changed the labor union force forever. This essay will discuss the reasons Cesar Chavez became involved in Union rights, the immediate impact he had, and also the legacy he left behind with his actions that influenced American society.
Bravery is a heroic quality that everyone has and when put into action it can become deadly or even unstoppable. Martin Luther King pushed through the racism as if he had no fear of the consequences. Martin Luther King stood tall as Beowulf did when fighting Grendel for the Danes; people not his family but for those in need. They both fought having no fear of their death but the greatness they would achieve in the end. Beowulf and Martin Luther King were both men who fought for the people and not themselves. Martin Luther King was pushed to the edge when being jailed for protest, But through all he prevailed and overcame. Bravery
The Cuban historical film, La Última Cena, or The Last Supper, takes place at a plantation in Havana at the end of the 18th century. In an effort to respect the holy week and to teach his slaves about Christianity, a sanctimonious plantation owner invites twelve of his slaves to dinner with him to reenact the last supper. During the dinner, the Count tries to influence his slaves towards Christianity and feeds them religious rhetoric. As the night goes on, the Count gets drunk and begins to make promises to his slaves in an attempt to seem more Christ-like. The next day, Good Friday, his promises are not kept and the slaves revolt. Because of the rebellion, the twelve slaves that ate dinner with the Count are all hunted down and killed except for one. This film can be further explained through the concepts of three theorists, Aimé Césaire, Homi K. Bhabha, and W.E.B. DuBois.
Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) is most known for his efforts for the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Martin Luther King Jr.’s leadership style is best described as charismatic. Charismatic leadership style is one based on personal qualities such as charm, persuasiveness, personal power, self-confidence, extraordinary ideas, and strong convictions ( Decker & Sullivan, 2009). MLK was one who could inspire, empower, an...
As a leader, he proved that even small community leaders can have a large impact. When he was beginning his activism, he started small. In 1973, Milk opened a camera store on Castro Street in San Francisco, which would serve to be the hub of the gay rights political movement of the area. When running for office, Castro Camera would serve as a polling station, allowing the members of the community to come right to the place they’ve known in order to vote. Milk carved a space for the community, staying true, and creating personal connection with the people in that community. He was an effective leader because he put himself on an equal plane with the people he was trying to serve.
Leadership is not about the power; it’s about what the person would do or have done to deserve the leadership spot. Martin luther King Jr. did not say that he wanted to be the leader of the civil rights movement, but people choose him as the leader of the movement though. Unlike King, the pigs from the book Animal Farm wanted to rule the farm and to be more powerful than any other on the farm. Unlike the pigs in Animal Farm, Martin Luther King Jr. embodies the characteristics of a strong leader because he was empowering, passionate, and was respected.
He goes from “Greatness equals top, powerful, master, first, ruler, adult to Greatness equals bottom, servant, slave, last, child” (Kraybill, 2011, p.229). This equation shows how people that are powerful and first are not the true meaning of greatness and those that are humble, at the bottom, and servants are what true greatness really means. Many of the characteristics that adults talked about on the interviews are what true greatness means. The one adult that did not say God as one great person chose Cesar Chavez and he was a humble person that was not at the top but made a great impact in helping
