I have displayed leadership in my life primarily at my work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), at my hometown nursing home. I remember one time that I was on the latter end of getting trained in, the one training me had a medical emergency and had to leave. Which left a newer CNA and myself to take care of a hall of about twenty five residents for the night. So I asked her what residents she was comfortable with getting read for bed, I went on to take care of the others, and for some we helped to bed together. I did know when to cry uncle, however, for some residents that I did not know as well I asked for advice from my fellow coworkers on other halls about how I should care for them. We were able to have a successful night and all the
residents received excellent care thanks to the leadership I showed that night. In this case, my leadership made a difference by allowing those residents to receive excellent care even with two CNA's who did not have the most experience at the time. Another way that I have showed my leadership was when I coached Junior Olympic volleyball for a club team. I was in charge of running practices, drawing up a lineup, and understanding the game to allow our team to be successful. My leadership was not necessarily measured by the number of games we won, but rather the experience, knowledge, and fun that we had throughout our season. I made a difference by leading this volleyball team to understand and love the sport they play, which in my mind is far more important than the number of wins you receive.

Growing up I have always taken on leadership roles. I was always the organizers of group projects and was team captain of my club and high school soccer team for several years. This past experience with leadership roles has lead to me developing several of valuable traits associated with leadership. For example, I have strong communication and problem solving skills, which have helped me in my past leadership positions and will continue to be an asset in the future. Although I have had experience in leadership roles in the past, I learned through this reading that there is room for a considerable amount of growth. One thing that was a valuable lesson for me was that leaders must be followed as well as follow others at times. I have always took control of situations and tried to lead others, but now I realize that sometimes even leaders need to take a back seat and let their followers take some control. I will employ this in the future in the clinical setting to ensure that all of my subordinates or colleagues feel they have control and power over the decisions being made. This is definitely an area I intend to grow in and utilize in the future to enhance my leadership abilities. I was a business manager of a utility company for about twelve years. I was responsible for four employees and the operation of the office. This was a job that I never thought I would leave, I loved it, and I looked forward to coming to work every day. Due to a situation out of my control and politics the administration changed and I could not support something that I did not believe in or feel was a good ethical practice. My leadership position provided me a variety of tasks, no one day was the same, I found the job challenging and but at the same time satisfying. The one practice that I maintained while in this position was that I wanted to lead by example. I would not ask an employee to do something that I would not do myself. I was new to the way Americans communicate and was still getting used to the college environment, but then it happened; during my second semester in college, I had to join a group for a project that was about 20 percent of the grade in the class. I did not want to be bossy, but I also did not want to have to do all the work. The group first started slow, but I kept on sending messages about the assignment and group meetings. Everybody eventually started to work together and we got along well. We finished the project ahead of time and we had a lot of spare time to revise the project. This group experience was very positive, we even studying together for other classes.
