What is decentralization?
Decentralization is a broad term with many applications. First used in 1846, it is defined as “the dispersion or distribution of functions and powers; specifically: the delegation of power from a central authority to regional and local authorities” (“Decentralization”). Decentralization is often hard to understand without discussing centralization. Centralization is defined as all decision making power concentrated in the hands of a primary authority.

Neither level acting alone can change the bacis dividion of powers the constitution makes between them .although it can get quite complicated the overall system is rather simple . Federalism allows for local and state government to make laws that pertain to their people after all who knows them better than the political figures that deal with them on a day to day basis . While the national government makes laws that are for the entire general public . This compromise can be seen in our day to day lives . We pay taxes to the national government who then distributes the money to the different states to support programs like welfare, maintanince on highways and education

Federalism is a political system in which authority is divided between different levels of government (Barbour and Wright, 75). Federalism has been around since 1787 in the United States of America. The divided powers between the state governments and the national governments are powers that are limited to a certain level so they do not depend on each other for power. The United States of America has a federal government in which the central government shares influence with the numerous smaller state governments. The idea was for a “more perfect union.”
Federalism is essentially the system of government in which a constitution divides power between a central government and regional governments (Lowi, A48). It, by definition, does not necessarily favor dividing the power in a particular way that would give more power to either the states or the federal government. When first formed, the American central government was very weak. Though the Constitution strengthened it, the states still had most of the power. The Federalists carefully planned out their idea of federalism and ensured that their view would best handle their concerns and issues. In Madison’s Federalist 51, he explains many key concepts that he believed were important to the foundation of a new government. Since Madison’s Federalist 51, there have been many changes made to the federalist system, which now allows the central government to act with the original powers of the states. Although federalism has changed, it is still a very effective system of government implemented in the United States and that could be implemented anywhere.
The difference between the separation of powers and federalism is slim to nothing. Federalism consists of the national government and the fifty states, in which the national government is defined by the separation of powers: the three branches of government. Federalism is the over view form of government that is stated in the Constitution which implies the separation of powers between central and regional government. On the other hand, separation of powers is the separation of branches under the national government. In other words, the separation of powers is a subunit of federalism.
The U.S. Constitution creates a unique system of federalism. It is a system of government that divides power between a central governmental unit and local administrations. In this way, both central and local governments enjoy sovereignty. However, because the two governments share authority over the same territory, it may be problematic to establish the division of their powers. Federalism is a legal concept that is centered around the concept that law is best handled as a two layered responsibility. Federalism is also built on a belief that sharing power with the local government is key to a successful governance. According to the text book, “the United States was the first nation to adopt federalism as its governing framework” (pg83). The following are a few examples of some advantages, as well as disadvantages of Federalism.
