High school in the 21st century is a lot different than it was for people in generations older than us (Our parents, their parents etc). Today we go to school with many different races/ethnicities, religions, political affiliation, and genders/ sexuality are present here at Central Valley High School in the 21st century.
Here at Central Valley we have many different races/ethnicities. Many people think that race and ethnicity is the same but it isn´t theyŕe very different. Race is the category of people who sare inherited physical characteristics and who are perceived by others as being a distinct group, while ethnicity is a set of cultural characteristics that distinguishes one group from another group. At Central Valley there are many
different races that attend. In the past we’ve had a group called MECHA which was a group where students can go and feel comfortable around others who are the same race or similar to them. When you walk through the doors at Central Valley you often immediately see the different races and how they stand out. Going on to the topic of ethnicity, as a bear community we have many different cultures here. One of which is the group of students from the Marshall Islands. One of my friends has pointed out to me that they’re shorter than the rest of the students, they speak really fast and in their language they really don’t use English that often. Those cultural characteristics that I just mentioned set them apart from the other groups. Many individuals believe that once you walk through the doors you notice that Central Valley is very accepting (at times). We accept many different individuals. Their race and ethnicity do not seem to matter to the student here at the school. Although I’ve seen people make fun of individuals that didn’t look them or act like them. Not everyone that walks through the doors at Central Valley are non-judgemental. Students judge people by the first look they don’t always take the time to get to know them, but if you do the students story is much more interesting than you anticipated. When my mother grandmother was in highschool it wasn’t accepted for African Americans to go to school with the white students. She didn’t go to school with many individuals of different races and ethnicities. It wasn’t the norm. It wasn’t accepted. They were seen as being different from her and they were judged for the color of the skin or the cultural characteristics.
This variation has no substantial ties to skin color, but does show genetic variation from different geographical locations in the world. These variations are not categorized in groups of what people call race, but rather ethnicity. Ethnicity, defined by Stephen Cornell, is a sense of common ancestry based on cultural attachments, past linguistic heritage, religious affiliations, claimed kinship, or some physical traits. Race, as most people catoragize it, encompuses many ethnicitys. Ethnicities are local populations, this makes sense that they would tend to have less genetic variation compared to each other then the rest of the world as they would share genetic adaptations resulting from the environment they live in. Making the transition from middle school to high school is a huge stepping stone in a teenager’s life. High school represents both the ending of a childhood and the beginning of adulthood. It’s a rite of passage and often many teens have the wrong impression when beginning this passage. Most began high school with learning the last thing on their mind. They come in looking for a story like adventure and have a false sense of reality created through fabricated movie plots acted out by fictional characters. In all actuality high school is nothing like you see in movies, television shows, or what you read about in magazines.
The trivialization of high school in the present educational organization for teens has been posited in the public; however, it is one vital issue that is being debated.
The conflict between race and ethnicity came up throughout the time I administered my questionnaires. In the questionnaires, many people questioned what they should respond to for the question which referenced their “race” or “ethnicity”. Some people saw it as a division and how the terms can be used as a negative term or a positive term to label a group of people.
High school is the stepping stone between childhood and the real world. John Dewey spent most of his life striving to improve this transition. He believed high schools were not preparing students for the needs of society by merely teaching the basics, such as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Dewey argued that high schools “must present situations where problems are relevant to the problems of living together, and where observation and information are calculated to develop social insight and interest.” This type of education would create socially-responsible citizens who have the ability to work together and solve societal issues; in turn, America’s democratic society would flourish. The desegregation of public facilities began with the decision of Brown vs Board of Education in 1954, where the Supreme Court of the United States deemed segregation unlawful and unconstitutional. The country was told that desegregation was to take place "with all deliberate speed". This angered the white community. Violent retaliation was the means used to prevent the integration of blacks into various public facilities. In fact, the Autherine Lucy case demonstrated to the entire country that violent mobs could halt integration demanded by a federal court order. However, three years later, the Little Rock Crisis would affirm that if provoked by mobs, the executive branch of the US government would impose by force a federal court order.
Through research of DNA samples, scientists have been able to declare that race is not biologically constructed due to the similarities between human genes. Nevertheless, in reality, people still emphasized on biological aspects such as skin color, or hair texture to categorize others into different races. This in turn, denied the true identity of race, which it is culturally constructed. Ethnicity, by definition is also culturally constructed, therefore it greatly resemble race. There is no real clear line to distinct the two.
Race, in the common understanding, draws upon differences not only of skin color and physical attributes but also of language, nationality, and religion. Race categories are often used as ethnic intensifiers, with the aim of justifying the exploitation of one group by another. Race is an idea that has become so fixed in American society that there is no room for open-mindedness when challenging the idea of racial categories. Over the years there has been a drastic change with the way the term "race" is used by scientists. Essentially, there is a major difference between the biological and sociological views of race.
There are many races and ethnicities in the United States. While we are all in the same country we have many differences. These differences are sometimes noticeable just by looking at a person. Other times you can only find out about them only by diving deeper into the person’s background and see their cultural differences. I’m going to give you an example of race and ethnicity by presenting a profile of myself.

Issues of Race and Ethnicity dominate the academic discourses of various disciplines including the field of Anthropology. Race and Ethnicity are controversial terms that are defined and used by people in many different ways. This essay shall explore the ways in which Anthropologists make a distinction between race and ethnicity and how these distinctions serve as frames for cross-cultural comparison and analysis. It is important to accurately define these coined terms before one is able to make accurate comparisons and distinctions between them, and their relation to the concept of culture.
George F. Will’s “College President’s Plan: Abolish High School” conveys ideas that had never crossed my mind. He states, “For various reasons, some rooted in American history and others reflecting recent developments, education has become, for the moment, the most salient social concern and therefore the most potent political issue.” Will introduces Leon Botstein, who doesn’t actually option to abolish high school, just to change the structure of our schools in general. Botstein says that high school was created for 15- to 18-year-olds who were still children. In today’s society, those children are now young adults who are physiologically and psychologically more advanced.
A person's ethnicity is their ethnic traits, classification, or association. Andy recalls his gramother on his mother’s side being very proud of their family name. He states she had a very strong distinction between whites that were of some standing and taste and whites were not. She also carried a very strong distinction between whites of taste and all other groups, which is why she was so appalled at his mother marrying his Hispanic stepfather. His father on the otherhand, did not have any ethnic or class disposition.
Ethnicity is generally used to refer to diverse and unequal skill of social groups with specific culture. Diverse languages, religions and attire assist to group different ethnicities. These ethnic groups develop because of history and social experiences. Ethnic group tend to hold a culture bond. People can relate to other essentially their parents when concerning ethnic beliefs and customs.
