Once named the friendliest city in the world, Puerto Vallarta in my eyes continues to carry that reputation. I learned more than I ever imagined on my summer study abroad trip to Costa Rica. I learned that Costa Rica is a country like no other. The country is much different than what the United States of America is like. The lifestyles, customs, and practices of Costa Rica are very different than those that I am accustomed to. As an outsider looking into the country, I saw a country that is very poor financially but very rich in spirit. They do not appreciate wealth as United States citizens do, but instead appreciate love and gratitude. I noticed that Costa Ricans have very strong family values and cultural roots.

This past week in Belize was undoubtedly one of the best experiences I have ever had. In the special topics biology class, I learned so much about the ecology, culture, and history of the newly established country. About the size of Manhattan and with a population of almost 350,000 people, Belize surprisingly holds approximately 500 species of birds. We were able to spot 135 species of birds during our stay and also learned about a few mutualism relationships.

One of the many challenges the frontier had to post-colonial nations was that the frontier competing with the major urban areas for a larger role in shaping the nations national identity. This can be seen in the two nations of the United States of America and Argentina. There are many similarities in how the frontier shaped the national identity of the two nations. The frontier could be summed up in Argentina by the gaucho architype and the United States of America by the mountain man architype. Also, looking at how Brazil and the United States of America advanced their frontiers shows different results.

However, there are some implications when trying to generalize a country as a whole because not everyone has the same opinion or idea.

Costa Rica lost more than one-third of its rainforest during the booming 20th century to cattle ranching, agriculture, and logging.
