Internet Censorship- Research Paper

Throughout the world there has been an increase in discussions regarding “Censorship of the Internet”, explain how Censorship can work in some instances but in others it can be a detriment to society.
According to Amnesty International (2014), internet censorship is the control and suppression of online information or services by government or other stakeholder institutions. It is enforced by monitoring chat rooms and forums, deleting blogs, blocking websites and re-routing search results. Throughout the world, discussion on the issue has been heightening in recent times, fuelled by arguments claiming its worth and infringement of liberty. In some circumstances, censorship can work to the advantage of the individual, protecting them against online theft, cyberbullying, and stalking, while ensuring dangerous or offensive content cannot be accessed. Further to these, in dangerous political circumstances censorship can help mitigate against terrorism and foreign aggression. It can also help business and the artistic community, assisting with the protection of copyright and intellectual property. However, these security advantages do come at the cost of civil liberty and can be abused to make censorship a detriment to society. Censorship can limit basic human rights, create ignorant and intellectually starved societies, and in some instances give governments absolute political control.
Protection from theft demonstrates that internet censorship can work for society in certain capacities. Through electronic mediums, individual users can be targeted by criminals seeking to steal their finances or identities. Information technology is particularly vulnerable when it ...

...king, while ensuring criminals operating child pornography rings cannot access their markets. Additionally, dangerous ideologies and hate speech could have their spread stopped, bolstering national security and maintaining a peaceful, respectful society. Protection of intellectual property could also be implemented to help protect businesses, such as the recording industry. However, these benefits to security can come at the cost of freedom. Countries such as China have been able to abuse censorship methods to limit basic human rights, put an end to free expression and create a situation of total political control, where the population is insulated from the rest of the world. In summation, censorship can indeed benefit society, but must be carefully regulated and weighed against basic human freedoms to ensure it does not become a detriment to society.

Thesis: Although some people believe that censorship is adequate to select what things does the society will be good and can live around it while others believe that there should be no censorship because it takes away your right of expression of freedom.
There are over 2,405,518,376 internet users on a global scale. More than 50% of the world have a form of Internet censorship, and of those countries China, North Korea, Iran, and Vietnam heavily restrict its citizens. This recent topic has reached new heights in the US with the growing number of access to internet. More and more people are debating whether the internet should be censored. Internet censorship is the control or suppression of what can be accessed, published, or viewed on the internet. This would affect everyone and me. I specifically use the internet to read about controversial view and other information that gets ignored by the media or isn’t circulated anymore. Most of these sites would fall in the black list of censoring. A small percentage of users post conspicuous posts, graphic material, and infringing copyright links. Although inappropriate it shouldn’t demand internet censorship, because it goes against the individual rights of the people. Freedom of speech and press will be restricted by the government. To a point where people would be scared to express themselves, or spread information for they might be punished. Even if their opinion is erroneous and maleficent, it’s still that person’s opinion and he’s entitled to it. Same can be said for the common good everyone should be able to voice their opinions without censorship anywhere. Everyone should also have the access to any information on the internet. If anyone is offended by what is said on the internet, then they can remember to not visit the webpage next time and hold themselves accountable. This paper will examine the issue of internet censorship constituting a violation to the American people individual rights, common good, and the constitution.
Censorship Protects a Nation Censorship is very important in relation to a nation, “It restrains vulgarity and obscenity” (Pillai). It helps the nation against danger. First, it protects military information that could be used for evil, then, it can also help with controlling panic and rumors throughout a nation, “A similar case was observed in India in 2008 when terrorists attacked The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai” (Pillai). Finally, censorship preserves the secrets of the entire nation, secrets that could put nations in danger (Pillai). Censorship can lead to a peaceful society by protecting our secrets from those who want to harm us.
Part of the allure of the Internet has always been the anonymity it offers its users. As the Internet has grown however, causing capitalists and governments to enter the picture, the old rules are changing fast. E-commerce firms employ the latest technologies to track minute details on customer behavior. The FBI's Carnivore email-tracking system is being increasingly used to infringe on the privacy of netizens. Corporations now monitor their employees' web and email usage. In addition to these privacy infringements, Internet users are also having their use censored, as governments, corporations, and other institutions block access to certain sites. However, as technology can be used to wage war on personal freedoms, it can also be employed in the fight against censorship and invasion of privacy.
Censorship is an evil necessity. As much as it is disliked, it can provide much needed protection in society. It saves society from knowing information that could potentially be harmful or disruptive to our well-being. People pretend to want to know everything they want to be included in. Nevertheless, people need safety and reliability.
Censorship plays a huge role in today’s society. Censorship effects society in excellent ways by putting a blind fold on certain types of media, language, and other social values that should not be seen by all humans. Censorship is known to many as being listed under the category of moral. Censorship is moral, because it bans certain books from schools that should be banned, it helps parents keep their children from material they should not be in acquaintance with, and is politically correct for society and students due to its ethical values. Censorship is effective in many ways and should be used regularly due to its effects on students and society.
Do you want our future generations being exposed to violence, hate, sex, illegal substances, and false information, and then one day think it would be cool or alright to try these things? The internet is filled with dangerous information, that children should never have the freedom to access. Children learn from example, and if they search, watch, or read something on the web that could be potentially dangerous, they could be influenced or curious and think that it would be alright to imitate one day. If our children now are viewing these things, it could mean that are future generations can grow to be more violent and our world could become more dangerous than it already is today. Censorship is necessary if we plan on having our kids grow up in the safest environment possible.
I liken censorship to using a double-edge sword. It can be an invaluable weapon in theory, but it can also be misused and cause recoil. A suppression of ideas and content of course is good against the wrong people, but also inhibits and restrains people who are knowledgeable enough. Just imagine if they kept the information of the world being round not flat from people just because they thought Pythagoras and Aristotle were crazy and didn’t think people can handle the truth. In my humble opinion censorship is helpful in some occasions, harmful for many reasons, and a non-factor in the wide scheme of things.
Internet is a powerful tool that allows users to collaborate and interact with others all over the world conveniently and relatively safely. It has allowed education and trade to be accessed easily and quickly, but all these benefits do not come without very taxing costs. This is especially true when dealing with the likes of the Internet. Countries in the European Union and Asia have realized this and have taken action against the threat of net neutrality to protect their citizens, even at the cost of online privacy. Internet censorship is required to protect us from our opinions and vices. Every country should adopt Internet censorship and regulation since it improves society by reducing pornography, racism/prejudice, and online identity theft.
Tackling censorship is much more important than it appears to be at the surface; taking down censorship would help preserve the expression of thought. It would help preserve the right to listen to the unaltered forms of everything. Most importantly, it would help preserve the rapidly weakening basic right of speech. Censorship has always altered the lives of many people, whether they know it or not. People are constantly exposed to the censored version of entertainment.
Censorship as defined by Wikipedia is the suppression of speech or other public communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by a government, media outlet or other controlling body. This context in itself is not acceptable as we have no rights to limit a person’s freedom of speech as that is the basic right we have as humans. However, censorship is a step taken by relevant authorities in order to maintain national security and stability, limit actions that may insight disregard for the law be it violence or causing harm to others and prevent the corruption of children. The first point that is going to be pointed out in this essay is regarding national security and stability. It is a common practice by governments aro...
Censorship is an interesting system because of its variety and versatility. Some governments use it sparingly to protect state secrets and others heavily regulate all forms of the media and internet to try to control the people and what they see. To censor something means to “examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable” (Merriam – Webster). Censorship has been going on since 399 BC, but there wasn’t much need for it until the invention of the printing press due to the fact that censorship is mostly done to documents and websites. Over the last thousand years, censorship has been the subject of much debate and turmoil. Whether or not it morally right for a government to be able to censor things from the public’s
The Internet provides a gateway for an individual to speak freely and anonymously without being targeted to what he or she said. With this said, one of the biggest issues concerning the Internet today is freedom of speech. The issue of free speech on the Internet has been a topic of discussion around the world within the past years. It is a unique communication medium and is powerful than the traditional media[2]. Because the Internet can not be compared equally to other mediums of communication, it deserves the utmost freedom of speech protection from the government. The restriction of speech on the Internet takes away from individual's rights and freedom from experiencing the Internet's benefits and uses. Information found on the Internet is endless and boundless and this poses the question, "should the government be allowed to regulate the information and content being transmitted or posted online?"
Censorship is blocking or hiding something that is considered unacceptable to the public eye or a group of a certain age. In looking at the effects of censorship on society, it is apparent that it can both be beneficial and harmful. Censorship is seen to be beneficial through preventing dangerous people from viewing government documents and preventing children from viewing inappropriate content. Censorship can be harmful when it comes to taking away rights declared in the Constitution and setting unequal standards for men and women. These examples show how effects censorship has on society can be both good and bad. Looking at facts and credible opinions is a way to truly see how censorship has negative and positive effects.
The Internet is an extremely educational and communicative tool. Everyone can access a tremendous amount of information and connect with people on the other end of the planet; it is capable of doing everything. Nowadays, the society is facing a variety of challenges and controversies which are mostly related to religion, morality, the economic crisis, etc., and the most talked-about issue in today’s world is “Internet censorship”. Although the Internet is very useful, many people are suggesting the idea of censoring the Internet; however, the government should not censor the Internet because a free and open Internet usage has many positive impacts on people’s lives.
