In today’s culture, censorship is a very controversial topic that is discussed by many people all over the world because of its serious effect on different elements in the society. Censorship is the process of prohibiting and monitoring some type of information in a specific setting or society. Some people may argue that the act of censorship is merely an act of brainwashing, there are three main types of censorship; moral, political and literature censorship. Moral censorship is used to block out media that is deemed to be obscene and morally incorrect. Political censorship is a form of censorship used by a government to withhold information from their people. Censorship in schools happens in the form of the removal or manipulation of resources and learning processes causing students to be neglected of a diverse curriculum. Many schools in spite of noble intentions, essentially deny students the chance to progress intellectually. A predominantly treacherous effect of censorship in schools is its power to silence teachers. Very few teachers take an active standpoint or speak out against censorship unless forced to do so as a result of public challenges to the literature curriculum. Some examples of classic adolescent literature that has been banned are Animal Farm, Harry Potter and To Kill a Mockingbird. By banning many classic books, some life lessons may be ignored. However, censorship in school doesn’t only exist regarding literature. A major controversial topic that is censored in school is sexual education. Many parents take the initiative to deny their children the information on sexual education because they consider it unsuitable. This censorship usually stems from concerned parents who do not want their children exposed to a view other than their own. In some religious families they believe in abstinence until marriage, therefore many parents deem sexual education as inappropriate and unnecessary. Many children miss out on sexual education in school, which is extremely important for the maturing child. Without sexual education subjects like puberty, sexuality and practicing safe sex may be confusing to children and teens, in the long run this is very
