Introduction
Censorship is a long–standing institution in human civilization, which is developing increasingly with social development from people’s speech and the invention of printing to the creation of the internet. Moreover, censorship also is an obstruction of the full and free development in society.
Thesis Statement
This essay analyzes the impact of censorship for society and explains why censorship is happening. There are two reasons including the technology and media of information spreading and the management of the government. Furthermore, this essay also argues that censorship is more harmful to society, compared with the benefits of the censorship. Some leaders possibly want to supervise the circumstance of society and develop their countries as their wish. China is one of the most successful countries where it has a complete censoring system to intercept some information such as sensitive words. It is some kinds of word that is forbidden in the internet, TV program and movie in China including anti-political words, violent words, swearing words and so forth. Peter (2011) states “Hong Kong, China (CNN) - Type the words ‘Egypt,’ ‘Tiananmen’ or ‘June 4th, 1989’ into any of China's microblogging sites and the search will return this message: ‘According to relevant law and regulations, the results are not displayed.’” Chinese government doesn’t want to these words affect most citizens. For example, 1989 Democracy Movement is a big event in the China, but people cannot find any information about this event. Arts, an unlimited medium, demonstrate the opinion of artists for the world. However, it is often happening annually, several artists are cancelled their exhibitions or punished by local government in some country. The reason is their works illustrating elements that reveal the issues and weakness of the society or government. For example, Ai Weiwei, a Chinese artist, whose most artworks reflect the problem of China, was arrested by Chinese polices in 2011 in Beijing. (no reference). These punitive measures potentially disturb artists’ free creation. Correspondingly, according to (dictionary) self-censorship means “a decision not to say or write something because it might cause problem or offend someone”.
