Imagine you and your friend are eating dinner in a restaurant and you're trying to talk to your friend but they are so focused on their phone, they can’t even hear you. Most people would be angry or frustrated at their friend. Even though your friend is at fault, it is not entirely their fault because cell phones are manipulating the behavior of millions of Americans. Not only are cell phones blocking the connection between people and hurting society. But they are also moving people away from face-to-face interactions leaving people void of emotion. As most people would believe cell phones are supposed to help us, conversely cell phones are destroying the communication between people. One of the most popular users are college students. The average college student uses a smartphone for about nine hours each day. That’s longer than many of those students spend sleeping. According to a marketing professor at Baylor University “For such people, losing a phone or having it’s battery die could cause anxiety or panic”. The professor goes further on to state that “People start to have panic attacks if they don’t use their cell phones for a certain amount of time”. Anxiety and panic are vital signs of addiction. These symptoms can be compared to someone who has a drug addiction. This change in behavior and attachment to an object or substance like social media breeds devastating results. Moreover, cell phone addiction can be very dangerous because it can hurt one emotionally. When someone who is addicted loses his or her phone for a while, he or she might do something they wouldn’t normally do. These people react that way because they are attached to their phones and can’t let go even for a little time.
