Have you ever been out in public, and thought about the multitude of people using cell phones around you? Have you ever thought about how inappropriate it is to use them in certain circumstances? The use of cell phones has been banned in countless restaurants and there are restrictions regarding them in many work places. In the same way, cell phones are being banned in many schools. The principal of my high school has banned the use of cell phone during school hours. I believe he has good reason to do so. Using cell phones during school could be the cause of enormous distractions. In addition, it would make it easier for students to cheat, and it is possible that there would be more bullying within the school. Isn’t learning what we go to school for? The use of cell phones during class would very likely cause many disruptions. Many students would be texting instead of focusing on what the teacher is attempting to teach. More than likely, not many students would take notes or complete their class work. For that reason, teachers will then have to waste time telling their students to put their phones away, and there is almost always a student who will not listen. Unquestionably, this will waste even more time. In addition, phones are also very noisy. Cell phones should not be allowed during school hours for a couple of different reasons. For one students use their cell phones to get on the Internet during classes, which causes the students not to listen to there lessons. Another reason is that students can text other students and send test answers to other students during class. Or the students could just be playing games on their phones during class instead of working or listening to the teacher. If this is not aloud at work it should not be allowed at school but we let this happen.
Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school's most easily accessible phone was on the other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could've used to contact the authorities more quickly. The issue we are addressing today is the use of cellular devices in educational facilities. I believe that cell phone use is of extreme convenience, and has academically beneficial aspects, among it's so called "faults".
The cell phone has come along way since its creation, not only are you able to contact anyone at any time, but now many cell phones operate much like personal computers with various applications. It is almost impossible to meet some one these days who does not own a cell phone; even young children have cell phones for emergencies. There is no doubt that cell phones as well as their many applications have come in handy for simply saving time, as well as possibly saving lives in extraordinary circumstances. Although cell phones have improved many facets of our daily lives, there are many cell phone users who simply can not carry out their day with out these devices. Most notably the typical college student, cell phones can be used constructively to send important emails to teachers, or to keep a schedule of your assignments. More often they are used as a form of amusement or distraction from daily work and activities. Walk into a typical class room setting and you will no doubt catch a student holding a cell phone under their desk or behind purse engaging in a text conversation with a friend.
Picture this, there has been a school lockdown, the suspect cut the landlines so no one could call the police for a rescue. However, the suspect was captured by the police much faster than he imagined. The last scene wouldn’t have happened if it was one decade ago, because cell phones were not popular in schools then. When it comes to cell phones, some people think they should not be permitted in schools, and other people think they should be permitted in schools. I agree with the latter opinion for the following reasons: Cell phones are an efficient way to communicate when emergencies occur in school; cell phones can be a great tool for learning during school hours; and the current prohibitive rules on cell phones are merely fruitless efforts. Cell phones have become an important aspect of our daily lives. Whether for entertainment, communication, research or reference, cell phones are used throughout the day in various capacities. Nevertheless, cell phones have not been embraced in all aspects of life, namely during school. In his October 10, 2009 article “Schools Should Embrace Cell Phones as Learning Tools Instead of Banning Them,” A.J. Dean argues that cell phones are useful to students in classrooms as long as they are used and monitored efficiently. Despite the disadvantages in learning with cell phone usage at school, Dean uses rhetorical strategies to persuade readers — in this case high school students and administration — that cell phones can be used as significant learning tools at school, and that there are far more advantages than disadvantages in using cell phones at school. Dean explains the advantageous of embracing cell phones as learning tools. He supports his claims with reasons and examples from recent events. In his conclusion, Dean leaves the reader with a rhetorical question reminding us that one disadvantage should not suppress the many advantages.
Many places in society are setting policies on digital device. The principal at my school has also set policies on banning cell phones in school. Students should not be permitted to use cell phones in school. Using cell phones during school allows students to cheat. Students will be more distracted by cell phones and pay less attention to the teacher and to the lesson. Students have a higher chance of getting in trouble if they use cell phones in school rather than if they are not allowed to use digital devices in school.
In a survey of 100 students, 60% of them agreed cell phones cause distraction in a classroom environment. This shows that most of the students have experienced classroom distraction caused by cell phones. Cell phones should be prohibited at school campus because they are disruptive in a classroom environment and causes students to avoid their school work.
In conclusion, cellphones must be banned, or at least highly monitored in schools and on school campus. Cheating is very wrong and illegal, and in response to growing cheating scandals, cellphone searches should be made mandatory for every high school student. Cyber bullying reports must be taken more seriously and thoroughly investigated. Sexting must be discouraged and should not be tolerated. Is the allowance of cellphones at school worth the risk of endangering the well-being of high school students?
Ever since incidents such as 9/11 and Columbine, high schools have started implementing new rules regarding cellphones. Cellphones regard the attention of building managers, teachers, parents, and students. Although teachers see them as a distraction and a way to cheat, they can be quite helpful to students. School districts should permit students to use cellular devices in school for purposes of improving their education and providing themselves a sense of security.
