Through narration Celeste, a devout fourteen-year-old girl whom, from a young age, showed a moderate amount of musical talent with a side of the proverbial “something” is introduced. However, a life that was on course for the ordinary is suddenly upended when a school shooting takes place causing many casualties and placing Celeste in the hospital. While recovering Celeste and her older sister Eleanor write music, which they perform during a candle light vigil filled with press. The press takes notice of this talent and Celeste lands a manager, a straight forward publicist (Josie), and a recording deal to boot. As Celeste’s EP becomes a hit, she is jettisoned into stardom. Celeste finally begins to open up a bit about what happened to her, but seems dissociated and distant, divulging the fact that ever since the traumatic event she has had the same recurring dream in which she is riding a motorbike along the road and sees a body, which she believes is her at different ages in each dream. The next morning happens to be 9/11. Celeste emotionally stumbles into Eleanor’s hotel room to inform her of what has happened and finds both Eleanor and the manager naked in bed. As Celeste returns to the hotel everything begins to dissolve into chaos, as she confronts Eleanor after Albertine has informed her that she has had sex for the first time. During this confrontation it is revealed that Eleanor has in fact been the one writing the songs all along. As things continue to spiral Celeste equates herself to a new religion during a press conference, takes drugs and sleeps with her manager, finally culminating in a situation where it no longer looks as though she will be able to perform that evening as she is having a bad trip. Eleanor helps Celeste calm down and their relation momentarily returns to one of sisterly
