In this day and age, celebrities rule over the media and most people’s lives. It is almost impossible to go anywhere and not see something or hear something about a certain celebrity. Due to the fact that celebrities dominate the media, and young children today have some platform of media, children most likely have a celebrity as their role model. Celebrity role models could have a very negative impact on the lives of children. People around the world today view the celebrities as “good” role models, and many follow their ways, which may have negative results and may leave children believing in the wrong things. Celebrities hold a strong power to influence the lifestyle trends of an audience. As members of the entertainment industry, celebrities are looked up to as role models by a large general public. With such high exposure, celebrities essentially hold the power to positively or negatively influence their followers, from fashion trends to behavioral tendencies, the attitudes and lifestyle habits of celebrities influence cultural qualities and the way in which many people function within society. What kind of example are these celebrities providing to teenagers when they can barely control their life? Role models are supposed to be someone you admire, someone you look up to and try and follow their example. Not someone who lives a fake life and you barely know. As stated in an article called “Why this generation is so completely obsessed with the idea of Celebrity” Adam Pliskin explains the real reason why we follow celebrities as much as we do. This is because we secretly want fame ourselves.

Today it is hard to imagine a female celebrity without seeing mental images of someone stumbling out of clubs, under the influence of drugs and alcohol, or exposing their skin. What has happened to the role models that were once defined by people like Audrey Hepburn, Mother Teresa and Eleanor Roosevelt. In between the chaotic mess of people like Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, and the Kardashians is an under-rated role model, Taylor Swift. Aside from her music, her keen attitude is receiving accolade from many people. Taylor Swift is the best role model for girls of because of her clean public image.

Celebrities have a great effect on the people we become. Some people spend so much time consumed by the entertainment world that they begin to idolize certain celebrities in hopes of becoming like them. Two major starlets in the eye of countless teenage girls around the world would be Jennifer Lawrence, known for her starring role as Katniss Everdeen in the film The Hunger Games, and Miley Cyrus, a hit singer with number one songs, “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball”. These two stars both have large and supportive fan bases, but which celebrity is the better role model for teenage girls is the question at hand. Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs, modesty, and humbleness.

As a whole, we need to figure out how to tell if what the media is portraying is realistic. Adults and children cannot be comparing their lives to millionaires.
