Compared to the makibaka generation of the 70’s, ours is relatively apathetic to political matters. This is somehow attributable to the modern set-up of Philippine news broadcasting and advertising.
Do you know what PDAF is? How about a storm surge?
Before the Yellow Revolution in 1986, a distinct line was established to separate the primetime news from show business news. To keep yourself informed in both, you have to watch the professional reporter Harry Gasser in NewsWatch and the entertaining chikadora Inday Badiday in Eye to Eye. Nowadays, you can be updated by watching a single program. In Bandila, Boy Abunda can be found sitting side by side, laughing and sharing banters with primetime news reporters Karen Davila, Ces Drilon and Julius Babao. As observed by Jean Encinas-Franco, a political scientist in UP, it just shows how serious news and celebrity gossips managed to intertwine over a few years. Furthermore, it suggests that the former and the latter are now equal in terms of importance. Our interest is diverted. Even if we are presented with

This is a result of the belief that they are a manifestation of modernization and democracy. If a clear distinction between entertainment and politics cannot be established, the government may lose its credibility in the eyes of the people and thus, lose its legitimacy. Because the subject of political apathy in the Philippines is relatively not talked about both from a practical and an academic perspective, people are not well-informed and are mere spectators. Filipinos would rather feign indifference than admit ignorance. Because of lack of understanding of politics, people may find it difficult to appreciate their right to vote which makes them deem it as pointless to gain unbeneficial knowledge. This rationalization of ignorance results in political
A celebrity is not a person known for his/her talent or achievement, but an individual recognized for his/her reputation created by the media. The phase of stardom is slippery, and media may choose to represent celebrities varying from exaggerated admiration to mockery. The three texts chosen, movie "Sunset Boulevard", feature article "Over the Hilton" and television show "Celebrity Uncensored Six" are texts presenting different perception of celebrities than their usual images - either corrupted by the encircling media, overloads oneself with self-indulgence, or just mocks celebrity in a broad spectrum. Such media items empower and impresses the audience by perceiving celebrities as people who pay the price of privacy to gain well knowness, signifying the vanity of stardom from the commonly accepted images.
Neil Postman is deeply worried about what technology can do to a culture or, more importantly, what technology can undo in a culture. In the case of television, Postman believes that, by happily surrendering ourselves to it, Americans are losing the ability to conduct and participate in meaningful, rational public discourse and public affairs. Or, to put it another way, TV is undoing public discourse and, as the title of his book Amusing Ourselves to Death suggests, we are willing accomplices.

Presently 98% of the households in the United States have one or more televisions in them. What once was regarded as a luxury item has become a staple appliance of the American household. Gone are the days of the three channel black and white programming of the early years; that has been replaced by digital flat screen televisions connected to satellite programming capable of receiving thousands of channels from around the world. Although televisions and television programming today differ from those of the telescreens in Orwell’s 1984, we are beginning to realize that the effects of television viewing may be the same as those of the telescreens.

The media, including television programming, cartoons, film, the news, as well as literature and magazines, is a very powerful and pervasive medium for expression. It can reach a large number of people and convey ideas, cultural norms, stereotypic roles, power relationships, ethics, and values. Through these messages, the mass media may have a strong influence on individual behavior, views, and values, as well as in shaping national character and culture. Although there is a great potential for the media to have a positive and affirming effect on the public and society at large, there may be important negative consequences when the messages conveyed are harmful, destructive, or violent.

I would walk into my local Shoppers Drug Mart to pick up some items. As soon as I stand in line to cash my items, low and behold I would see rows and rows of glossy magazines and they would have captions like “ Kate Middleton under attack by the royal family.” or “ Why did Jennifer and Ben Affleck break up.” I could hear the magazine whispering in my ears saying, “Raquel, come read me. You know you want to.”

A prevailing phenomenon in our country especially during elections which spurs animosities in the minds of the Filipino citizens and even debates among scholars is the practice of “Political dynasty.” In a journal written by Alfred W. McCoy entitled “An Anarchy of Families”: The Historiography of State and Family in the Philippines, he underlined four principal aspects on why the Philippines is steadily shifting into a national oligarchy, and these involve rival elites families, a weak central state, a hybrid capitalism, and a protracted experience of elections.
The mass media has played a key role in shaping people’s lives. The modern society’s use of mass media including TV, radio, newspaper, as well as print media has largely influenced people’s ideas regarding themselves and the society at large. This is evident from their behavior towards themselves and their community as well as their treatment of the environment. While some experts believe that the media is to blame for most of the negative behavioral traits among the active members of society, the majority agree that the media makes people understand and develop a positive sense of association with their society within which they live, making it easy for them to identify and get their role in it.
By informing the citizenry of what its government and other centres of power are doing, the media becomes itself an integral part of the political process. By monitoring the centres of power-political, economic, and social—the media functions to keep them in check. The second role of the media involves an educational function. It includes reporting on and promoting discussion of ideas, opinions, and truths toward the end of social refinement of those ideas, opinions and truths. In this role the media follows the tradition of the town meeting. Third, the media functions as a utility, a conduit of information about what is happening. It operates as the society’s “bulletin board.” The fourth function is social or cultural. The media holds up a mirror to society and reflects the kind of people we are, shows us our heroes and villains, recalls our shared values. We must now examine each of these in more
