Intervention As proposed in the literature review, parental adherence to the CDC childhood immunization schedule requires effective provider and parent reminders. The intervention will be personalized to meet the needs of parents and providers of those under the age of 3 in the clinical setting. The AAP recommendations along with the CDC’s immunization schedule established by the ACIP will be the standards for scheduling immunization appointments. The interventions are based on AAP endorsed interventions developed by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services and the CDC’s AFIX approach (AAP, 2014; CDC, 2015). These reminders will be utilized for the parents of patients and electronic reminders will be implemented to assist the providers or APRN’s with vaccination management. While call-reminders have been proven beneficial to ensuring immunization appointments are kept, the provision of more than one form of reminder has been proven more effective and is supported by the AAP and ACIP (CDC, 2015). Parents will be given language appropriate appointments cards for the follow-up immunization date along with a telephone reminder prior to the visit and a text message as applicable. In addition to the use of parental reminders, provider reminders will be implemented by the use electronic prompts within the patient’s health records. These reminders will consist of flagged patient charts that appear when the provider accesses the electronic medical record for the patient (CDC, 2015). With the use of both parental and provider reminders, the likelihood of missed doses of vaccinations decrease. In addition to individual reminders, computer generated reminders will be used to generate daily reminders of those patients within the clinic due for immunizations. The evaluation will be based on the data collected for each individual patient’s immunization adherence and the total adherence percentages for the all the patients in the clinic. CoCASA system data and reports again will be compilated by the designated representative of AFIX and the total percentages will be compared to those statistics at the local and state level. Data for the local level will be obtained from the Robeson County Health Department and the state data for NC from ChildVaxView. ChildVaxView is an interactive system created by the CDC to assist with understanding the data from the National Immunization Survery and interactively create graphs and calculations related to vaccination statistics (CDC, 2016). Each state and/or country develops their own individualized guidelines through interactions with federal and state government agencies. One in five babies around the world are missing out on basic vaccines and may die from weak health systems and insufficient funding. “Vaccinations are causing a major upsurge in childhood diseases, adult maladies, and even deadly ailments such as Gulf War Syndrome and Lou Gehrig’s disease” (Blaylock). Every now and then an individual’s doctor calls telling them about the latest vaccine they should receive. The person immediately schedules a time to come in and get it done. But do they even give a second thought about it? Have they ever thought that maybe they do not need another vaccination? Many people have not taken the time to seriously think about the process of immunization. The truth is, there are many dangers that the average person should be unaware of. Rarely do vaccines actually accomplish what the public has been told. In fact, a lot of vaccines contain harmful substances that have been linked to disorders such as autism. The lack of education and dishonesty from doctors are putting people in danger of health problems without even realizing. Many parents feel obligated for their children to get vaccinated because of school, not knowing they have the alternative option of refusing immunization.

Vaccines are becoming increasingly hazardous for many children and parents are not being informed about the safety of their children. Current reports are linking vaccines to serious life-threatening disorders such as asthma, autism, immune system dysfunction, and mental retardation (Williams). These recent revelations are causing an increasing amount of people to claim religious and medical exemptions from vaccines. From 1999 to 2006, exemptions have more than doubled from 9,722 to 24,919 (Cronin). It is very clear that vaccinations are posing many problems for parents everywhere. Each day researchers are finding out about vaccines and are realizing that there are a lot more risks than benefits. Dr Phillip F. Incao explains: “Today, far more children suffer from allergies and other chronic immune system disorders than from life-threatening infectious disease. It is neither reasonable nor prudent to persist in presuming that the benefits of any vaccination outweigh its risk” (qtd in Spaker). While infectious diseases are becoming uncommon there is no need for any person to get vaccinated.

Childhood vaccinations have replaced common childhood illness as a “rite of passage” for many young children. Many parents, at the recommendation of their physician, diligently bring their children to the doctor every couple of months for what are thought to be important and safe vaccinations. Many parents are lead to believe that vaccinating their children, albeit the so-called slight risks associated with vaccines, is the responsible thing to do for the sake of the common good, which includes their child’s safety, as well as the safety of the community. But are parents made aware of some of the ingredients in these so-called safe vaccines and the inherent risks of the ingredients? Are parents aware of the protection the United States government offers to vaccine manufacturers and those who recommend and administer the vaccines? Do parents realize that their child just might be a sacrificial lamb?
My personal goal is to be a successful pediatric nurse who communicates and connect with patients on the personal level. I think I have not reached this goal because I still need to work on my communication skills. Through this course experience, I am a step closer to my goal. I discovered that it is easier to communicate and connect with people who has similar background and experience. Since most clients were students, I found it easy to find common topics to talk about and related to them easily. I think for me to be a successful pediatric nurse; I need to be familiar with the children’s world such as physical and cognitive development stages. I also need to know their interests, games, play, and language. Knowing the population would help me to communicate and connect with them.

Not only are we not allowing our body to build an immunity on it’s own, but we are also traumatizing our children by making them receive shots on a routine basis. There are many reasons that vaccinations should not be mandatory, but the most important are the number of vaccinations, ineffectiveness, and side effects. The number of vaccinations a child receives, in the first six years of his/her life, has increased dramatically. According to “Vaccine Controversies” by Kathy Koch, “Today, an American child receives up to 39 doses of 12 different vaccines, most given during the first two years of life. And, unlike in previous decades, today’s youngsters are given multiple inoculations on the same day” (643).
