The book starts out in Shanghai China in the year 1942 where we are introduced to Ye Xian, also called Chinese Cinderella or for short CC is the protagonist of the story. She is kind, smart and playful. She lives in China and tells the story through her own eyes. CC is around twelve years old and was thrown out of her home because of an argument with her stepmom, the antagonist of the story. The stepmom is evil, arrogant and self absorbed. Lost in Shanghai with no place to go, CC wants to go to her aunt's apartment, but remembers she is in Nan Tian Island taking care of her godmother. The group's mission is to get the crew that landed on Nan tian island safely to China through Japanese controlled waters. To get to China the group has to smuggle the Americans through the woods. CC, her friends and teachers manage to get the Americans to safe hospitals in Shanghai where they are treated. When CC returns back to the academy she is sent home to her dad. At home with her dad, her privacy is not respected and she decides to run away again. As CC joins the other kids at the academy she is informed that one of the American crew that landed in Japan has been taken into Bridge House a Japanese prison. Here three of the crew members are killed. CC develops a plan using wine growing vegetables to help the remaining prisoners escape. In the escape the prisoners climb down the vines and into a truck where they get into German officer uniforms. In the truck the children talk about their religions and how what they believe is different from everyone else. On their way to the village they are stopped by Nazi soldiers who says they must come with them to be relocated. Hannah is the only one who knows what is actually about to happen. She tries to explain why they must not go with the soldiers but the adults explain that they have no choice. While at camp, Greyson overhears some cafeteria workers having a suspicious conversation about the observatory. One of the cafeteria workers warns Greyson “You will not tell a soul about whatever you heard.” Greyson decides to lead a group of his friends to the observatory to investigate the legend when they discover the cafeteria workers and some other men pretending to be astronomers and hiding a secret. The fake astronomers convince the kids to return to camp, but Greyson remembers the last thing that his dad told him, "Do the good that should be done" and he works with his camp counselor to plan a return trip to the observatory. Greyson assigns each of his friends an important role in the plan and under Greyson’s leadership they manage to sneak into the observatory and steal two keys that the terrorists need to launch a missile hidden inside. Like a true hero, Greyson leads the terrorists on a great chase back to camp, “The bullets hit, blashing chunks from the trees all around them. Bark rained on the hood and their heads; sharp splinters stung their faces, forcing Greyson to stomp on the brakes and throw himself into the back of the cart, dragging Sydney with him.” and he remains brave and daring even when he ends up being taken hostage. Miyamoto and Heine had been childhood friends but in their later years, their was an honorable dispute over land. Many signs pointed to Miyamoto’s guilt, but in the end, the cause of death is determined tragically accidental and Miyamoto is set free after spending three lonely, freezing, winter months in his desolate cell. A secret love affair existed between Hatsue, now Miyamoto’s wife, and Ishmael Chambers, the islands journalist when they were adolescents. They would meet in the dense shelter of the cedar forests where they would prove their lustful love for each other. Hatsue being Japanese and Ishmael being white was not only against all of societies morals, but against everything Hatsue had ever known; her entire culture and history. As tensions boil among the islands natives, the Japanese immigrants were subject to profuse searches, stripped of every priceless belonging, and deported to work camps. Among the confusion, families were torn apart left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Ishmael and Hatsue were forced apart and Ishmeal joined the army and their efforts against the Japanese. Though many years have passed, Ishmael has never healed from the heartbreak of losing Hatsue and he is still desperately in love with her.

Without the guidance of Miss Bibi Chen, the group makes ignorant decisions that lead to them missing out on experiences that would have been truly memorable. What made the group choose to change the itinerary? No one was as knowledgeable about Burma as their friend Bibi Chen. I would have to assume that what they think they know about the country lead them to make changes.
