Whether you choose to meet or compete with the deadline is up to you. Procrastination has led many people to put things off until the last minute and later end up regretting it. Procrastination can result from being lazy, having little to no motivation, and poor time management. The consequences of these three can lead to emotional effects and negative outcomes.
The first cause of procrastination can be the feeling of laziness. The decision of whether the task is worth doing comes to mind. When there’s little to no importance to the assignment the feeling of laziness creeps in and curls you in a blanket. The feeling of comfort begins to take a toll on your academics, and the end result is failure. Procrastination kicks in and there’s no way out, you’ve made up your mind and decide not to begin or finish your task. Laziness leads to work being incomplete and is perhaps set aside for another time. Dealing with an excessive amount of work may seem too much for someone who is lazy.

Many people can struggle with managing their time. Choosing to go to a party on the night before your final exam can be an example of not setting priorities. Finding the time to do your task, whether it’s school related or not is important. If you don’t have a balance in your day to day life you can be faced with procrastination. For instance, being involved in too many after school activities can take a toll in academic success. You can find yourself fighting with time, trying to get those last hours back. The thought of getting an assignment done will be left the night before it’s due because you think it’ll get done. Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.
Procrastination comes from the thought of an individual knowing that they can do the same job at a later time. Everyone has been guilty of procrastinating because it is a human fear that no one can escape. To procrastinate is to put off or defer until another time, in other words it may mean to delay (Marano). In Psychology Today, Hara Marano said “twenty percent of all humans identify themselves as chronic procrastinators” (“Marano”). Procrastination is a human behavior that every college student has experienced at some point in his or her educational paths. For some college students, procrastination is a minor issue, for other college students, procrastination is a way of life that results in stress and could possibly be easily be avoided. Why? Procrastination can be broken down into three categories: how someone is considered a procrastinator, characteristics of a procrastinator, and how to escape procrastination.
A simple task, goal, or dream hinders somewhere in their lifespan while they lie distracted from temporary pleasures. With no deadlines in their lives, procrastination can slowly take away from what a person seeks in their future. One could set out to pursue a dreamed career only to find that it’s taking them quite a long time or it doesn’t work out at all. This is the deadliest form of procrastination, because their is no due date for what a person sets out to accomplish. Having no deadline, one could get caught up on less important things and fall a slave to procrastination. This will most likely bring fear, anxiety, frustration, guilt, and other negative emotions into a person’s life. In other words, procrastination is like a credit card. It’s lots of fun to enjoy the instant gratifications of not having to deal with something at the moment, until the “bill” comes at the end. As a child, I would put off my work mainly because I did not want to do and wanted to occupy myself with something else, rather than to sit there and actually do the work. Keeping an updated calendar or agenda keep students aware of when an assignment is due. Students can set due dates on the calendar in their phone. If the student does not have or is not allowed to have electronics they can purchase an agenda or calendar for cheap. Some schools supply students with an agenda to make sure they keep up with due dates on major assignments and other work. If students are involved in any extracurricular activities, they should set certain times and dates on when to complete an assignment. It is important to know how to balance out of school activities with school work. Starting their work early and getting ahead is another way students can manage their time to finish the assignment. As soon as students is assigned the assignment they should get started right away. Friends and family members can also help remind one when his or her assignment is almost due, so it is completed on time. When procrastinating one do not learn to discipline themselves therefore their work suffers, and the student get stressed out. Hairston and colleagues believe that procrastination is associated with sleep troubles, an association mediated by ruminative cognitions (Hairston et al., 2016). Participants completed an online questionnaire regarding procrastination; sleep troubles, rumination, emotional state, and biological clock. The results showed that in evening types procrastination positively correlates with sleep trouble, negative affect, and rumination. I mostly believe that there are negative attributes to procrastination, more so than good attributes. Tim Urban, who conducts a speech called Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator for TED in 2016, explains that every human is a procrastinator- some more than others. I agree with everything he says in his speech because I can connect with every piece of evidence he claims, mostly including that there is a “Panic Monster” that pops up in your brain when you are close to a deadline and haven’t gotten anything done, especially when it comes from why I’m always so stressed out about school. People all procrastinate at one time or another. Procrastination is the practice of delaying work on important tasks in favor of less challenging ones. Chronic procrastinating hinders productivity and affects our state of mind by creating anxiety and stress (Reichelt). As deadlines approach, one often feels frustration and guilt for not starting on a task earlier. We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which often results in a mad scramble to finish the project in the twenty-four hours before the projects deadline. One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the misconception that we need to be inspired or in the mood to work on the task at hand (Reichelt). Seeing that Time Management is imperative when it comes to college and success, recognizing bad habits, should be one of the first obstructions immediately eliminated from your daily schedule. Create new habits if you tend to procrastinate and start planning ahead to manage your most important priorities. According to David Allen (2001),"Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" (p.59) "changes in the way you clarify and organize all things that command your attention-could represent a significant shift in how you approach some key aspects of your day to day work." Setting up deadlines and completing your assignments a few days before the due date will eliminate the procrastination stage. Creating a list with the most important priorities first, will help sort out your assignments and eliminate stress and feeling overwhelmed.
Procrastination can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life because procrastination is the thief of time.
