It has often been said the “Kill the head and the body dies.” During 2012 there was a reported 3.8 million concussions, double what it was reported in 2002. In this paper I’ll cover what a concussion is and how it affects the human body. Although injuries are fairly common in a sport such as football, concussions shouldn’t be taken lightly because of the permanent or fatal damages it can cause to the players who endure them.
To fully understand why concussions are so dangerous you must first know what it is. A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shake if the head or body. Some of the signs and symptoms of a concussion are dizziness, clumsiness, headache, nausea, confusion, and blurry vision. These would generally show up soon after the bump, blow or jolt. The CDC also says that the effects of a concussion are very gradual, in the first few minutes the athlete might be slightly confused or dizzy, but after an hour they can’t recall going to practice or game. Most athletes’ need a couple days or a week to fully recover from a concussion, but others need longer. Athletes’ who experience repeat concussions could slow recovery or increase the chances of long term problems, which could be fatal. Researchers conducted study of eleven North Central Florida high schools and found that high school football players did not have the appropriate knowledge regarding the signs, symptoms, and consequences of concussions. They knew symptoms such as headache, dizziness, confusion, and balance problems however; they missed other major symptoms, such as nausea, neck pain, grogginess, difficulty concentrating, and personality changes. This is alarming seeing that concussions could lead to brain hemorrhage, coma and even death. The lack of parent and athlete education on concussions has led the Florida High School Athletic
