The Catholic Social Teaching principle of work and workers is countercultural, especially within today’s society. The ideologies that this principle is based on, work against societal norms that have allowed employers to neglect their workers and consumers to judge them unfairly. Instead of the human dignity of these workers being respected and upheld in the workplace, where they spend a majority of their time, it is actively disregarded for a larger profit. The principle of work and workers expresses the importance of the health and rights of workers, which should be the top-priority of employers. However, with society’s obsession with personal gain, these basic needs are often compromised for a larger profit. The principle of work and workers teaches that the economy serves us, not the other way around. Work is a word that one hears on a daily basis on multiple different levels; work out, work at school, go to work, work at home, work for change. Society today is made of people that work hard every moment of their day from sunrise to twilight, these workers work for food, housing, family, education, and transportation. Essentially in today’s world if one wants something they must work for it, gone are the days where handouts are common and charity is given freely. The question then arises, who speaks for these voiceless workers that are often working so hard they have no time to voice an opposition? Democratic ideologies in the United States provide the basis for both the limitations and boundaries given to each individual living in the country. However, the term individual is very tricky in a society that promotes democratic ideals but functions by capitalistic principles. This imbalance is seen throughout society but remains highly prevalent in lower economic classes in the country. The core values of Capitalism are not incorrect; however, when intertwined with American core values – democracy, equal opportunities, and pursuit of happiness – they cause conflict and damage the lives of certain individuals. Currently, human beings are thinking more on the line of they need work in order to make a living. For that reason, work has become meaningless, disagreeable, and unnatural. Many view work as a way to obtain money and not a meaningful human activity that one does for themselves. The author states that there are two reactions of the alienated and profoundly unsatisfactory character of the modern industrial work. One being the ideal of complete laziness and the other, hostility towards work. Fromm believes the reason why people have animosity regarding work is due to their unconscious mind. Subconsciously, a person has “a deep-seated, hostility towards work and all that is connected to it” says Fromm. I believe what Fromm is saying to be true, after all I witness it everyday. The American work ethic is something our country should be proud of. Since the days of George Washington Americans have worked hard for what they believe in, what they need, and what they want. It is our right as Americans to be able to work for these ideals. Without out a strong work ethic our country would crumble. From businessmen to politicians a strong work ethic is necessary to keep our country financially and politically stable.
Shipler concludes the book with these thoughts: "Workers at the edge of poverty are essential to America's prosperity, but their well-being is not treated as an integral part of the whole. Instead, the forgotten wage a daily struggle to keep themselves from falling over the cliff. It is time to be ashamed." No, it is time to move past the ideology and make work pay for all Americans.
A large part of this problem is that many Americans buy into the ploys of capitalism, sacrificing happiness for material gain. “Americans have voluntarily created, and voluntarily maintained, a society which increasingly frustrates and aggravates” them (8). Society’s uncontrolled development results in an artificial sense of scarcity which ensures “a steady flow of output” (78).

The Time of Frugality to a Life of Leisure Through Hard Work America was founded on hard work and ethics. These historical ethics remained as prominent themes in many American movies and literature. In 1758, Benjamin Franklin wrote his opinions on “The Way to Wealth”, published by Poor Richard’s Almanack. This piece of colonial literature shaped the American citizens’ view of work ethic and what it takes to become successful, especially the working class.

Another large debate in the issues and impacts of obesity is the responsibility of employer’s. Especially for those whose obesity comes from a sedentary lifestyle. Or perhaps need the preventative measures of keeping obesity at bay. A hot topic on the rise is whether or not employers should be mandated to give employees a work-out period in their schedule. The employers could offer employee’s incentives for utilizing resources (a company gym, discounted memberships, and dietician, walking a company track) and by using the resources keep costs low. Though initially it could be costly to take on the responsibility to offer extra incentives to employee’s it could offer long term potential savings. (Villareal, Apovian, Kushner, and Klein 2005) Those whose companies offer various programs and actively engage in them express more happiness, productivity, a greater quality of life, and overall better health. Better health allows for employee’s to serve their employers better. They use less sick pay, keep insurance premiums low, and are more likely to be in tune with their daily job. So while the initial cost may be high, the long term financial gain of a happy, healthy, productive team is hard not to invest in!
