Young and Childish
Every story has a hero, whether it be a classic such as Hamlet and Macbeth, or a more modern film such as Lord of the Rings. However, not all heros are successful in their journeys, and end up as a tragic hero. Throught The Catcher in the Rye, Holden faces failure. After flunking out of school for the fourth time, Holden goes back to New York to start his journey and figure out what to do with his life. Holden then goes through life, acting childish and being unable to progress in his venture into the future. J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye is a great example of a tragic hero, as the reader follows Holden Caulfield as he retells his story, which exemplifies his immaturity through his inability to interact with people,
He tries to make excuses, calling everyone a “fake” or “phony”, saying that everyone only cares about themselves and therefore aren’t real with others. This is a defense mechanism for him, making it harder for him to communicate with people, thus frustrating him. One example of these failed interactions can be seen with his roommate from Pencey Prep, Stradlater. Holden questions if Stradlater hooked up with his date that night, Jane Gallagher, who was a childhood friend of Holden’s. When Stradlater is dodgy with his answer, saying “That’s a professional secret, buddy” it angers Holden to the point of physically harming him (Salinger 43). This shows immaturity because a mature person would understand that Stradlater doesn’t want to talk about it, and would not turn to violence to try and solve their problems. Along with his lacking ability to maturely handle some situations, Holden also communicates immaturely with others. This can be seen when he meets up with Carl Luce, one of his advisors from Whooton. When he attended Whooton, Holden knew that Luce often talked to the boys about sex, and tries to bring this into the conversation, asking him multiple questions about his sex life. Luce, who has since matured, shoots Holden down and says “...typical Caulfield questions… When in the hell are you going to grow up?” (Salinger 146). This further
This is first seen when Holden gets mad at Stradlater and leaves his school early, getting on a train back to New York, his hometown. After getting back to the city, he stays in a hotel, unwilling to go home and face his parents after getting kicked out of yet another school. This can be seen as immature because he is running away from his problems at school, and is then afraid to face problems at home. Another instance is when he asks Sally to run away with him to Vermont. He claims that he will empty his bank account and they can live in a cabin and will one day get married. Sally rejects the idea immediately. Trying to talk some sense into him, she says “In the first place, we’re both practically children. And did you ever stop to think what you’d do if you didn’t get a job when your money ran out? We’d starve to death” (Salinger 132). Holden’s idea exemplifies his immaturity by suggesting something so irrational. Any mature, rational sixteen year old would never suggest leaving their home to start a life on their own. However, Holden yet again decides that he wants to leave home by moving out west and working at a filling station until he has the money to build himself a cabin. The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is a classic novel about a sixteen-year-old boy, Holden Caulfield, who speaks of a puzzling time in his life. Holden has only a few days until his expulsion from Pency Prep School. He starts out as the type of person who can't stand "phony" people. He believes that his school and everyone in it is phony, so he leaves early. He then spends three aimless days in New York City. During this time, Holden finds out more about himself and how he relates to the world around him. He believes that he is the catcher in the rye: " I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in a big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around-nobody big, I mean-except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What have I to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff..." (173). He briefly enters what he believes is adulthood and becomes a "phony" himself. One of the best known novels in English-speaking countries, J.D Salinger’s Catcher In The Rye deals with Holden Caulfield’s past trauma which is the triggering factor in his depression, anxiety and alienation. Holden tells an unnamed person what has happened in the three days prior to his mental breakdown. Through Holden’s relatable characteristics and Salinger’s narrative treatment, the book continues to engage audiences across generations.
Early on in the story Holden shows the readers that he is able to analyze people and make an educated judgement of them. Holden blames his departure from Elkton Hills on the people he was surrounded by. He says,“One of the biggest reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by phonies” (Salinger 17). This quote connects to the story because it seems Holden has trouble staying in one particular place if just a few things are not perfect. By understanding others, Holden is quick to decide that where he was at that particular time is not the place for him. This thinking does force him to go to another school, but at the same time, he decided that Elkton Hills is not the place for him. Being able to make a decision and stick to it without having second thoughts is something all high school students should be able to do. In the novel, Holden has come across people he knows like to manipulate others. With this mindset he does not completely avoid them, rather, he learns to deal with them. In chapter 19, there is an interaction where Holden knows his audience and adjusts his actions accordingly. Holden describes his friend, Luce, as an intellectual guy that voices his opinion. He says, “That’s the trouble with these intellectual guys. They never want to discuss anything serious unless they feel like it” (160). Childhood is an unusually hard thing to rid yourself of when it is time for you to pass into the intensified life of adults. Personally, I have yet to overcome that challenge. The Catcher in the Rye is a well developed story about a high school boy, Holden Caulfield, who is stuck between the stages of adolescence and adulthood, and is trying to discover his identity. All his life, Holden Caulfield has refused to grow up, and as the book progresses, he is on the fine line of leaving innocence and adolescence behind and passing into adulthood, but what gives him the needed shove into the realm of adulthood was getting over his brother, Allie’s death. To Holden, Allie is the main definition of innocence. Eventually Holden comes to the decision to be the catcher in the rye. After this decision he tries to follow through with his plan and ultimately decides that he can’t keep anyone from growing up. This seems to be his breaking point in the book where he finally overcomes all his negative emotions towards Allie’s death and accepts it for what it is, knowing that he has to move on.
In J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is seen by some critics a a drop out student destined for failure in life, but I see him as a symbol of an adolescent who struggles to adapt to the reality of adulthood.
Over the years, members of the literary community have critiqued just about every author they could get their pen on. One of the most popular novels to be critiqued has been J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. In favorable critiques, Holden Caulfield is a good guy stuck in a bad world. He is trying to make the best of his life, though ultimately losing that battle. Whereas he aims at stability and truth, the adult world cannot survive without suspense and lies. It is a testament to his innocence and decent spirit that Holden would place the safety of children as a goal in his lifetime. This serves to only re-iterate the fact that Holden is a sympathetic character, a person of high moral values who is too weak to pick himself up from a difficult situation.
In the Catcher in the Rye, Holden is an immature boy. Holden’s immaturity cause him many problem throughout the book. He is physically mature but not emotionally mature. He acts like a child. “All of a sudden I started to cry. I’d give anything if I hadn’t, but I did” (p. 103). Holden shows his emotional unstableness.
In a conversation Holden has with his sister Phoebe, she asks him what he would want to be. In response, Holden says, “... I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. ... I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff—I mean if they’re running and they don’t know where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them ... I’d just be the catcher in the rye” (Salinger 224-225). Holden reveals his desire to be the protector of innocence and the reader sees that he would rather live in his own fantasy of innocence, than face the reality of the world around him. In his dream world, Holden wishes to be someone who protects children’s innocence. Similar to a child, Holden oversimplifies real life and has his own fantasy of what he wants to do. Lott and Latham stated in regards to Holden and his journey while finding his identity and say, “... the heroes also experience disillusionment with themselves and with the world around them as they move from innocent idealism of the very young to a more realistic acceptance of personal limits and social imperfections” (24). During the novel, it is obvious that Holden is stuck between the worlds of adolescence and adulthood. Holden 's obsession with innocence causes difficulty in accepting the responsibilities of adulthood. Everything is considered “phony” by Holden, except for what is still innocent. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger’s main character Holden Caulfield matures throughout the course of the novel. In the beginning of the novel, Holden is a juvenile young man.
