Holden Caulfield is the main character in the, the Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger. He is a conflicted Character who has depicted clear differences between childhood and adulthood. Holden is dealing with the pressures of growing up while still wanting to be a child. The references that Holden makes to his childhood make it seem like that was the time when he was happiest. Jane Gallagher, who is a relevant figure in Holden’s life and past, but is never introduced in the novel, is one of the most important references to Holden’s childhood. In the final chapters of the book, Salinger introduces the Phoebe, Holden’s younger sister. Holden talks about Phoebe and how much he values her and their bond is better than any of the other characters that Salinger introduced to the reader. Phoebe questions Holden’s future after making him realize that he doesn’t “like anything that’s happening.” When questioned what he wants to be, he replies that he wants to be the ‘catcher in the rye’ (inspired by the poem he misheard’, and wants to save children from running over the edge of a cliff. The symbolism of this is the idea that Holden sees adulthood as something very negative and ‘phony’, yet children, like Phoebe, see it as a positive, natural thing that comes with life. The irony of Holden’s fantasy is that the poem he thought was entitled “If a body catch a body comin’ through the rye” is actually entitled “If a body meet a body coming through the rye” (which Phoebe corrects him on). This mistake is significant to Holden’s character, as it captures him directly between childhood and adulthood. The word ‘meet’ here means casual sex, something Holden despises. Salinger had a deep love and fascination with young children, especially young women. In the 1970s, Salinger maintained a close connection with an eighteen year-old girl, Joyce Maynard, who eventually moved in with the author. J.D. Salinger continued to have many relations with younger women, much like this one. His fascination with young women is reflected in Holden, who has a similar mind-set. Even as a seventeen year-old, Holden is infatuated with his perception of Jane Gallagher as a little girl. It is this picture of innocence that Holden is in love with, and not what Jane is like now. The concept of, "the catcher in the rye," itself projects his interest in children. He day-dreams about standing at the edge of the rye field catching any children that are too close to the edge of the cliff.
We see during the novel that Holden wants to be able to protect innocence in the world, however by the end of the story he lets go of that desire. This is a point of growth for Holden. He finds that it is impossible and unnecessary to keep all the innocence in the world. While with Phoebe Holden says, “I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye...I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff...That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye” (173). In this moment Holden wants to be able to preserve all the youth and innocence in the world. He doesn’t accept that kids have to grow and change and that they can’t stay innocent forever. Later on in the story when Holden is with Phoebe at a carousel again he thinks, “The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the golden ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. Holden tries to battle through the pressures of adulthood while staying in his childish frame of mind. He feels that if he acts childish, he can go back to that.
