Censorship: A Worthy Eye to Protect Children? Censorship. Censorship is the use of editing information out due to its content. There have many cases where adults have used censorship, as well as many different levels of it. From as high as government censorship to household censorship, it is located everywhere. In America, adults around the country use censorship because it preserves children’s mind’s from seeing things they should not. One popular use of censorship was around the release of J.D Salinger’s The Catcher in The Rye. In the story The Catcher in The Rye J.D. Salinger expresses the topic of sexuality, morals, and uses vivid language. As a result, many schools banned The Catcher in the Rye. When the book reached its peak in the 1960’s and 70’s, it was one of the most banned books in the country, receiving comment that it was not suitable for the public school community (“The Catcher in The Rye”). In further detail, it is one’s choice whether they can read graphic content in privacy. However, in a public place such as schools, where teaching values are important, filters are needed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all attendees. The use of such immoral values could teach students that graphic content is okay, which could violate a schools public curriculum. Additionally, some parents claim that the reasoning behind the censorship of the book was to preserve children’s thoughts. The book was mainly put on disapproval from between 1966 and 1975 in almost every school district in the United States. The book was said to be so bad that in 1960 a teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was fired for assigning the book to an eleventh-grade English class. Despite some opposition to the novel, however, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye should be on a reading list for the freshman students because it gives a crystal clear image on how the world is in violence, sex, and obscenity and the book also teaches the motifs of lying and deception.

That is the way censorship is brought up in the book. Today, however, it affects more than just books. It is used in movies, TV, news, magazines, and the Internet. Words, obscenity, and some vulgar things can be kept from the viewing audience. They can keep certain people, those seventeen and younger from seeing movies, TV, or Internet sites. In the book one character makes a point of saying, “ignorance is fatal.”

One of the most quoted amendments to the United States constitution is the first amendment; “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ...” This amendment guaranteeing free speech, press, and religion is still heavily debated and contested today. Censorship, as a challenge to free speech and press has been allowed many times and has been heavily debated itself. Many people censor for many different reasons and in many different forms. Censorship itself is not always a bad thing and has in some cases been used for protection of the general population.

Since its publication in 1951, The Catcher In the Rye, written by J.D. Salinger has served as a conflagration for debate and extreme controversy. Although the novel has been the target of scornful criticism, it has also been the topic of wide discussion. The novel portrays the life of sixteen year old, Holden Caufield. Currently in psychiatric care, Holden recalls what happened to him last Christmas. At the beginning of his story, Holden is a student at Pencey Prep School. Having been expelled for failing four out of his five classes, Holden leaves school and spends 72-hours in New York City before returning home. There, Holden encounters new ideas, people, and experiences. Holden's psychological battle within himself serves as the tool that uncovers the coming-of-age novel's underlying themes of teen angst, depression, and the disingenuous nature of society. The novel tackles issues of blatant profanity, teenage sex, and other erratic behavior. Such issues have supplemented the controversial nature of the book and in turn, have sparked the question of whether or not this book should be banned. The novel, The Catcher In the Rye, should not be banned from inclusion in the literature courses taught at the high school level.
This burden often falls on teachers. The use of offensive and inappropriate words often deems a book indecent for children to read. J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye is a victim of being censored and banned because of the language used in the story. Passages in the book contain large amounts of profanity, which many have taken offense to. In fact, research has shown that a whopping five percent of the novel consists of words that were inappropriate during the time period in which the book was published (Taylor). The use of profanity in The Catcher in the Rye is the biggest reason as to why many schools and libraries have banned it in the past.
