Cassius Clay Jr. was born in the segregated southern city of Louisville, Kentucky. He started boxing at around the age of twelve to stand up to kids that would try to bully him and steal his bicycle. Boxing gave Clay a way to release his anger in a safe way. When he was 18 years old he became the Olympic champion. By age 20 he was one of the most successful athletes in history. He was a great vocal supporter of civil rights struggle, a big supporter of Black Power. Muhammed Ali was one of the most well-known athletes to use their fame to support a controversial struggle.

One of Muhammad's biggest obstacles from him becoming the great boxer he is today was his fear of flying. If he didn’t overcome this obstacle he probably would not be as well known as he is today. It almost stopped him from becoming an Olympic champion at Rome in 1960. He passed that obstacle and ended up winning the gold medal easily. He was a boxer that was so depended on his legs with gave him great speed. Nobody was ready for him when he went into the ring because he wouldn’t stop moving until the fight was over. There was nobody at the 1960 Olympics that even stood a chance of beating him/ As an amateur fighter, Muhammad took every match very seriously and his only intent was to win the match. For example, when Muhammad was fighting Floyd Patterson he decided to not take the match seriously instead he humiliated him. He ran circles around Patterson and kept taunting him. He dragged the match out twelve rounds before the referee had to step in and end the match. This was when he started to show off to his fans saying that his opponents are not worthy to fight him. During the World Heavy Championship when Muhammad Ali was fighting against Sonny Liston when Muhammad was dogging all of his punches. He started taunting him when he said”Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” and “ You can't hit what you cant see”. Then knock him out in the first
The Civil Rights Movement was an act in the 1950’s and 1960’s in which African Americans tried to achieve civil rights equal to whites. During this time, there was definite tension; African Americans were nonviolently protesting for their rights. In the movie Remember the Titans, The Civil Rights Movement ties in because of bussing black and white neighbourhoods together, also causing the football team, The Titans to come together. The linebacker on the team, Gerry Bertier represents a good and fair captain in these feuding times, for he accepted the African Americans deeply after some bonding exercises. The essay will persuade the reader that Gerry Bertier was a good and fair captain because (1) he didn’t tolerate others not treating African Americans on the team well, (2) he shows leadership and responsibility throughout the team, (3) and he stayed motivated.
In the late 1980’s Muhammad changed his life around. He and his wife had separated, he converted to Islam, and he joined the U.S. Army (Biography, par 4). Being in the army was good for Muhammad. He served in Germany and the Middle East and was skilled in marksman (Biography, par 4, 5).

I have learned many new things about Muhammad Ali. Previously, I thought he was the greatest boxer of all time, however after my researching, I think he is one of the greatest persons of all time. I never would have guessed that by the time he was 19 years old he had already won six Kentucky Golden Gloves, two National Golden Gloves, two National AAU Titles, and an Olympic gold medal (Howard). I never knew that Ali refused to join the army because of his religion. Because of this, his boxing license was cancelled. He was stripped of his title, and was sentenced to five years in prison for draft evasion. The Supreme Court, however, reversed the draft evasion conviction on June 29, 1971, and Ali continued his boxing career. I did not know that Muhammad Ali was honored as a United Nations messenger of peace and went to Iraq in 1990 to negotiate and successfully get fifteen United States hostages released. Ali also received the Medal of Freedom last November.
Clay, named after his father and Kentucky abolitionist Cassius M. Clay, was born in Louisville, Kentucky. At age 12, he had his bicycle stolen, and reported the fact to a local policeman (and boxing trainer), Joe Martin. Martin suggested that Clay learn to fight; under his guidance, Clay rapidly advanced through the youth ranks. A low achiever academically, Clay won six Kentucky Gold Gloves while at high school and was allowed to graduate despite his poor grades. Presciently, his principal announced during a staff meeting about the issue that Clay would someday be "this school's claim to fame." Clay later joked about his lackluster academic record saying, "I said I was the Greatest, not the smartest."
Muhammad Ali was a man made to box. He had a great career before him since he made his first professional fight under President Eisenhower presidency. His Professional Career was really impressive. His had a great balance and was able to move his hands and feet in great speed and coordination. Ali was said to dance in the ring while destroying his opponents. Ali started fighting at a very short age, and his first teacher was Joe Martin (Hauser 18). Through hard work and discipline, he became a professional fighter and eventually the Heavyweight champion of the world. Although he lost the title twice, he regained it three times, putting him in the history books. His boxing career was put to an end when he started suffering from Parkinson's disease. This was the end of his boxing, but his greatness will never die.
