Both Edgar Allan Poe and Richard Connell have an excellent usage of literary devices such as imagery in their short stories, “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Most Dangerous Game.” “The Cask of Amontillado,” written by Poe, narrates the story of a person named Montresor who extracts revenge from Fortunato because he feels that Fortunato has wronged him. Montresor completes his revenge whenever he chains Fortunato to the niche of a wall and encloses the opening. And “The Most Dangerous Game,” written by Connell, is about how a hunter named Rainsford falls off of his yacht and ends up on Ship-Trap Island. include imagery; however one author does it better. The name of that author is Richard Connell because of his use of descriptive imagery that brings out the tone and mood of the story. First of all, Connell uses imagery by making scenes in “The Most Dangerous Game” more descriptive than Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado.” An example of this is when Connell writes, “The lights of the yacht became faint and ever-vanishing fireflies; then they were blotted out entirely by the night” (Connell 218). This scene where Rainsford gets abandoned by his ship is so well described that anybody can see Rainsford just floating in the vast ocean while his ship slowly abandons him. Such a vivid scene like this one isn’t the only one Connell provides the readers with; there are much more that are similarly written with such a level of description. This feat accomplished by Connell is so impressive that Poe can’t even compete with it. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” there isn’t one scene that a person can imagine seeing vividly because of the lack of imagery. Second, Connell also uses imagery to heighten and express the tone and mood in “The Most Dangerous Game.” Being able to express the tone and mood with such precisely chosen words makes the readers of this short story be able to feel the way Rainsford does.
Being able to feel the world in any story is an excellent way to make readers get involved in it, and Connell does this by using imagery. Connell writes, “The sensuous drowsiness of the night was on him. ‘It’s so dark,’ he thought, ‘that I could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids’”(Connell 217). The mood of this quote can make any reader feel drowsy because of the way Connell describes the night. Again this is something Poe cannot achieve. For example, Poe writes, “I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came at the length to the foot of the descent and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors” (Poe 867). This quote doesn’t even compare to what Connell did because Poe wrote The Cask of Amontillado without any imagery. The tone and mood created by Connell make the imagery of “The Most Dangerous Game” better than Poe’s short
story. However, Edgar Allan Poe provides the readers with imagery whenever he writes, “‘It is farther on,’ said I; ‘but observe the white webwork which gleams from these cavern walls’” (Poe 867). However Connell far exceeds Poe on the usage of imagery when he writes, “‘Can’t see it,’ remarked Rainsford, trying to peer through the dank tropical night that was palpable as it pressed its thick warm blackness upon the yacht” (Connell 215). Poe does use imagery that might give a little description that can help the reader picture the scene in their mind, but Connell’s use of imagery is far more descriptive. In Connell’s quote, you can picture the pitch-black night clearly in your head. The differences between these two quotes prove that Connell does a better task than Poe on imagery. Both of authors, Richard Connell and Edgar Allan Poe, include imagery in their short stories. Even though Poe has examples of imagery in “The Cask of Amontillado,” Connell’s use of imagery is way better. The reason is because the imagery provided in “The Most Dangerous Game” is so descriptive that the reader can vividly picture the scenes, and also the imagery enhances the tone and mood of the short story. Readers can feel the ambiance the way Rainsford does; whenever he’s being hunted by General Zaroff, the readers can relate to the way Rainsford feels scared or nervous all thanks to the tone and mood provided by the imagery. With all these reasons in mind, Richard Connell comes triumphant in the clash of whose imagery is better.
After reading the stories “The Most Dangerous Games” and “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Most Dangerous games” is my treasured of the two stories. The reason why I like “ The Most Dangerous Games” as a result the story is about hunting and I love to hunt. For example on the first day of the hunt for Rainsford, Rainsford tried to make a hard to follow him. After that he made a log and tied it to gather and then he put some of the strings over a branch and hid behind a log less than one hundred feet away. Next traps Rainsford dug next to the Quicksand and he put long like stakes pear in the bottom of the pothole and then climb a tree not far away. His plan didn’t direct the way he intended . Has a Story ever made a reader want to hurt the character responsible for trouble that’s being caused? Of course; usually the antagonist is often the nuisance. Richard Connell creates these instigative characters with pleasure and diversity. In his story “The Most Dangerous Game”, He Creates General Zaroff so that he is easy to hold a grudge against. Likewise Edgar Allan Poe Creates a character that is easy to hate. In his short story “The Cask of Amontillado”, Poe creates a mastermind killer. Connells antagonist, General Zaroff, and Poe’s antagonist, Montresor, give the reader an invitation to hate them. These two characters are similar yet different in their evil persona, wealth, and challenge.

Edgar Allan Poe has a style that is dark and morbid. His tone is very gloomy and obscure. The tone of “The Cask of Amontillado” is almost tame compared to the tone of “The Black Cat”, his other work we covered. The tone of that work is almost maddening. “The Cask of Amontillado” tone is very sinister and methodic. Whereas “The Black Cat”, has a pulse to a cadence and rhythm though no clear pattern is established. Poe’s style of writing seems so personal, as a reader I had to remind myself this was fiction. Fortunato believes Montresor is his good friend, but he ends up with being chained and walled in to the catacombs. There are three types of irony used in this short story: verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. Using these ironies, Poe wants the readers to understand about Montresor’s “friendship” with Fortunato.

Initially, he begins the poem with melancholic diction when the narrator is falling asleep: “while I pondered, weak and weary,” “nodded, nearly napping,” and “of someone gently rapping” (1-4). The utilization of alliteration in these lines supply a song-like rhythm, which is soothing to the reader. This usage of diction conveys a mellow tone. Further into the poem, when the increasingly agitated narrator becomes vexed at the raven, he lashes out at the bird. Here, he states, “Get thee back into the tempest and the Night’s Plutonian shore! / Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! / Leave my loneliness unbroken!--quit the bust above my door! / Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!” (98-101). Here, his uses archaic words and phrases such as “thee,” “Night’s Plutonian shore,” and “thy soul hath”. This usage of unorthodox language creates a theatrical, dramatic, and climactic effect, which leads to an impassioned tone. By presenting both tones, Poe is able to show the contrast between the two. This transformation from a tone that is mellow to one of frustration and anxiety represents the spiraling downward of the narrator’s mental state.
