August 1995, Jannie Mouton was abruptly fired from his job of thirteen years. At the time he was the managing director of SMK (Senekal Mouton and Kitshoff) a stockbroking company based in Johannesburg. The company was managed by twenty directors including himself, the two other original partners had already retired at the time. Jannie was left to conduct the day-to-day operations of SMK. (Nielson, 2014)
On the morning he got fired, he walked into his offices with no inclination of his impending departure. He was one of the founding partners of the company and wrongly presumed this meant job security. Shocked, worried and in dismay he did the only logical thing in his mind and executed a SWOT analysis on himself. (Hogg, 2014)

In an interview with Bronwyn Nielson, Mouton quotes his ex- wife “ Jannie you must have done something wrong, if 19 other partners think you must get fired then you must be doing something wrong”. (Nielson, 2014)
Jannie however did not take this lightly; instead he chose to re-evaluate himself as a brand, the reality of Mouton’s situation was the motivation for him to re-define and adjust his leadership techniques.

Wendell Berry a prolific American author once said, “The trouble…is that we are terrifyingly ignorant. The most learned of us are ignorant…the acquisition of knowledge always involves the revelation of ignorance – almost is the revelation of ignorance. Our knowledge of the world instructs us first of all that the world is greater than our knowledge of it ”. (Meadows and Wright, 2008)

When establishing the PSG Group one of the many things that Mouton took into consideration was Consistency, was the brand must be able to preform its duties in a regulated manner and to not let the various invested parties down.
It became Moutons belief that consumers need to understand the investment environment, they demand transparency and honest business practices
