By having a little better insight on the industry it could help in knowing if Microsoft is truly a monopoly over the industry or if other companies are involved in the market. If Microsoft truly has the best product then you cannot fully take that away from the benefiters being us the consumers.
As far as the Internet Browser, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is not the best quality but it is nice that when you purchase a computer it has something already there and ready to use. No one would want to purchase a computer without an Internet browser provided. Nowhere does it say that is the only browser that customers can use. It is really simply to download or purchase another Internet browser but again it depends on what the customers needs are. It is clearly a huge advantage for Microsoft to already work with the personal computer manufactures and have their operating system and Internet browser already installed on a computer for purchase but that does not eliminate other companies being able to provide other software that individuals can download on there own.
Only piece of information I would like to take a look at in order to better understand this case would be the contracts they have set up with the personal computer manufactures. This could be beneficial to know if they state in there that any computer they have download Microsoft Windows on has to come with Internet Explorer and even if requested by the customer to have other Internet browser place on the computer it will not be allowed. The point is, that Microsoft is a dominant player in the operating system and Internet browser industry and was in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The settlement that was finally agreed upon after 4 years was a huge step in allowing other companies enter the industry with a chance to survive again Microsoft. By making the company discloser certain codes, it allows other companies to be able to provide programs, games, etc. that prior may not have been compatible with Microsoft computers which was a majority of those that were sold. Microsoft still plays a huge roll in the industry of operating systems but have competition now with Apple more so than when this case took place. Microsoft is no longer the sole monopoly when it comes to the industry of operating systems for computers.

Microsoft’s mission of placing a “PC running Microsoft software on every desk and in every home” drove their overall strategy early on. Depending on the business segment within Microsoft, one would see in place very different business models as the strategy for each line of business could vary. In the operating system (OS) segment, Microsoft initially brought in an existing product and modified this (MS-DOS) to work with the Intel microprocessor, which were the “brains” of the IBM PC. Microsoft partnered with IBM to provide the operating system for the IBM PC. In addition to developing Windows, Microsoft during this period was working to write applications for the Apple OS.
The Internet was growing at an outstanding pace and many people believed that it was going to affect every business. However, Gates dismissed the Internet and Netscape as unimportant, saying that they would have no impact on him. As Netscape was ahead he needed to act quickly before it was too late, so he took advantage of his power as a leader and focused on regaining position over Netscape by adding the browser as an integral part of Windows, giving free copies to the public and forcing manufacturers to install the browser on the machine. In other words, he used his best existing resource which was Microsoft Windows as part of the strategy and used his monopoly to stifle competition and defeat its rivals. However, this strategic choice could have never succeeded at the business level, if Microsoft wouldn’t have the competitive advantage of understanding the customer and the market as they do.
